Here’s an in-depth look inside a car’s hybrid system and how it works!
A hybrid system comprises of an internal combustion engine and electric motor fed by a battery pack to propel the transmission in a vehicle. Typical benefits include lower emissions and better fuel economy, less wear and tear on the combustion engine, and more power. In this video, we tear apart all of the components in the Honda Accord V6 Hybrid’s Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system to see what’s inside and how it works.
The main components of the IMA system are the battery pack (Nickel metal hydride, 144V DC), junction board with contactors, power inverter for the IMA motor, air condition power inverter, DC to DC converter, a blower motor fan that cools electronic components behind the rear seat, the motor control unit and the slim asynchronous 3-phase AC electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission. Additional features on the Accord include a slimmer transmission with an electric ATF pump, active noise cancellation, variable cylinder management, dual mode A/C compressor, aluminum rebar and hood, amongst other upgrades.
The Honda Accord V6 Hybrid was ultimately a failure for what it was - it did not deliver the expected fuel economy of a hybrid that’s because its asynchronous motor was mounted directly to the crankshaft of the engine. This meant it was a mild hybrid - the combustion motor had to always be turned on to move the vehicle and it couldn’t be run on electric power alone.

@12:33 the bypass resistor is to limit the inrush current to the capacitors in the other components of the system, its this high current which causes the damaging ark between the contacts. What you have said is technically/electrically good too, a resistor in series will lower the voltage. The battery seems to be of the same capacity, chemistry(NiMH) and voltage of that of a Prius C(1.5L 4 cylinder inline), but this Accord is 3.0L V6! I like your videos and appreciate the effort being put into. Please continue with other informative tear downs.

Cool to see that the battery unit with all the electrical components look really serviceable. I have owned a Honda Insight 2011 for just over two years now and should the battery die tomorrow, I am still profiting of gas savings compared to my old Mazda 3. Also the Insight is a very comfortable car to drive! It makes you want to drive smooth and economical. I love this car! (I also own a small old French hatchback for when I want to have fun driving) P.s. a 3.0 V6 with all this heavy hybrid stuff around really seems to defeat the purpose of having a hybrid. Although this thing must drive like a dream with ice cold AC even when standing still. :)
@speedkar99
@speedkar99 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! It's good how Honda made everything easily serviceable. I believe the Insight has a very similar system but a higher voltage battery. A V6 was the wrong engine, Honda should have used a K20 with the Accord

ALL the (light duty) ICE vehicles should be like this. The rotor can double as engine flywheel. The electric motor can start the engine with ease, so in stop and go traffic, or waiting for traffic light, the ICE can be shut down completely. Of course, regenerative braking improve city fuel economy and brake pad wear, also replace the alternator. (It's great idea to have old starter as the backup)

@20:00 I think it is incorrect to say that these diodes are used as a rectifier, these diodes are present in other IGBT blocks. I may be wrong, its the way the IGBT are switched that turns the motor into a generator. I am still learning about the inverters, by watching Damien McGuire channel. In the Prius there is a separate stage with does this voltage conversion known as the voltage Booster which does Buck also.

You should check out a RAV4 Prime, which you can drive in electric only or hybrid mode. Hybrid mode has 300 total system horsepower.

@@speedkar99 US market never got the hybrid models. My understanding is only California and Oregon got the full EV models but only for lease. I think the reason we easily get them here is we get a lot of used vehicles from Japan due to their strange 10 year rule for cars. So basically we’re getting cars that are almost new with very low mileage.
