Hey guys .....another Good informative show and appreciate all the tips and all the questions that you get and the way you answer them. I planted a garden for about 20 years. We moved to another area, built the house and I tried gardening but it was disastrous due to Top soil loss so I quit gardening. I'm going to get back into gardening again and to be honest with you when I watch your shows I am amazed at how much I don't know and I always thought that I was a pretty knowledgeable gardener but after 33yrs, I realize how much I have forgotten. At 73 I'm fixing to get back to gardening again over in the area around Soperton, Georgia and the land that I'm going to be using has been cleared of pine trees ( two years ago ) and has sat there this whole time unattended. I would sincerely appreciate any information and or tips that you can provide as far as soil preparations. I purchased about 12 ea.4' by 8' by 17" raised garden kits. Potatoes, okra and corn are three vegetables that I want to continue planting in the ground. Unfortunately there was a lot of topsoil lost when they were pushing brush into burn piles. Thank you guys for all that you do for us gardeners here in Georgia. Your response would be greatly appreciated and I hope that you gentlemen and your business continues to thrive and be successful, May God Bless You and Yours.

I LOL'd at the "smoking shed" story at school. In the 70's at Wake Forest-Rolesville HS, NC, if you were 16 you could smoke in designated areas, usually at the end of a school building. Didn't need any note from home. Just be 16. 15 yr olds or younger were not allowed to smoke. When the bell rang to change classes it always looked like the ends of the school buildings were on fire due to all the smokers lighting up to burn one before the next class. Winstons and Marlboro Reds were the most popular brands back in the day. About 30 cents a pack.

Amazing video!!! I thought "BLIGHT" was blight and the reason for my tomato plants looking so bad, but now realize there are other reasons why my tomato leaves droop, yellow and die. I have cut off every branch with the black/brown dots hoping I have remedied the situation. I knew it couldn't be splash back, because I was very careful about pruning the bottom of the plants. Some are in grow bags and others are in the ground, this is my first year I actually had to pull out dying tomato plants. I certainly got an education about tomato diseases in this video, and will not grow next year to allow the soil to rest.

Fantastic class on Tomato diseases! I struggled a lot for years with many of these diseases/virus, etc here in East Alabama. Last year, I switched to drip irrigation and I trimmed any limbs of my tomatoes that wanted to touch the ground. I also switched to disease resistant hybrid varieties rather than the heirloom varieties. I had a pretty successful year. I'm hoping to improve and make this year even better. The one pest I have got to figure out how to get rid of is leaf-footed bugs.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Great to hear of your success. Those leaf-footed bugs are tough. You can manage them early in the season, but the population will just boom come July. At that point, we call it a day with tomatoes and decide not to give them any more habitat for breeding.

I had to chuckle when you talked about how different things were at school in the old days. When my mom went to Jr High school back in the late 40's, they had a gun club and the shooting range was in the basement of the school. Kids were able to bring their rifles and shotguns to school for gun club. I went to the same school in the early 80's and while the gun club was long gone, the shooting range was still there. (not in use) In high school kids could smoke outside, no note needed. I think they put an end to that a year or 2 after I graduated. (a good thing) BTW: This was in Wis.
@classicrocklover5615 Жыл бұрын
Sounds similar to Michigan! I attended HD in the mid to late 80s. Students could bring their deer rifles to school, but had to leave them in their trucks. They could bring a gun in for a demonstration speech on how to clean it, but it had to be checked in and inspected by the principal first.

My results so far this year are surprising me. I've never grown anything this pretty. I think the key is to give the plant the strongest immune system possible. I use Azomite, Masterblend and Silica for strong plants. I'm using a method where the pot drinks so much water, I don't have to worry about rain, even here in Florida. They may fizzle out but they look freakily good so far.

Good last two videos. I’m a heavy planter on corn and maters so a lot of good information the last two weeks. Got my first batch of mater seeds started, first batch of peppers, broccoli, and onions. I’m in 7B and i may go out on a limb and plant a week early. Rule of thumb I’ve grown up on is to plant corn on Good Friday but I will be on vacation that week so I’m planting last week of March. Zone 7B below Atlanta. Side note, I was highly considering building a pond right below my garden to use for irrigation with my drip tape, I’m glad I saw the last question. Moving on to next plan. No well and no water source. Relying on Mother Nature and bringing tanks full of water to the land weekly.

Our tomato plants end up looking like the picture. What we plan to do is try sun shade after they get a good start. Last year our plants were beautiful in the spring and the when summer hit the leaves started drying up and falling off. We did trim them up and kept them off the ground. By early fall when it wasn’t so hot the tops started growing and looking like spring again. My husband thinks our sun is much hotter than it use to be so we got 40 percent shade cloth and will try that this year.

We've found that no tomato can really handle it down here once temps start to hit the mid 90s in July. Shade cloth is a good idea though!

You are correct about tomato diseases and your geographic area of the country . I lived in south part of Ohio and tomatoes grew like weeds . You could throw out tops of tomatoes after cutting it off before slicing and dozens of plants would sprout and grow small tomatoes without doing anything at all . I live in South Georgia for several years now and you have to do things differently like youall said . Warm and lower humidity like 85 degrees and low humidity makes a big difference!

Hosts for thrips to look out for are Prickly Lettuce (Lactuca serriola), Cheeseweed (Malva parviflora), and Sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus) Other viruses can be from thrips on basil, lettuce and flowering Vinca. As we get ready to plant the garden in a couple to three weeks, is it good to use preventative sprays on the plants as soon as you plant them? One other thing, a garden center that we were going to purchase top soil from uses dead leftover sod and grinds it into the top soil that they sell you. We need 14 yds for our garden beds. Is the ground up dead sod ok to use in the garden?
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
If you consistently have issues with diseases or insects, it's always good to start spraying not long after planting as a preventative measure. Don't see why that topsoil would be an issue, assuming it hadn't been sprayed with anything that has a long residence time in the soil.

We are rebuilding and refilling all our raised beds this spring. I get to start a rotation from the beginning. I am in zone 8b in East Texas, which means we have split seasons like ya'll do there. So, do I rotate counting 3 seasons, or do I rotate counting 3 years? By the way, even with temps down to zero, I only lost the smallest of my onions. Those texas 1015's are tougher than I expected. We had freezing rain, then about 8 inches of powder snow, then icy wet snow on top of that. Maybe the powder snow acted as an insulator?

I have been raising my tomatoes in a high tunnel for about 20 years. Never a problem with disease. The big thing about growing outside is the rain on the plants. I plant in April, start harvest in June and only quit when Jack Frost says it's time to quit. This is in October. By then plants are about 15 feet long. (Single stem, supported on string from ceiling. Most of the time plants are in the same hole as the year before.

Yep. Growing in a high tunnel provides a very controlled environment where you can eliminate most of the environmental factors that cause these diseases.

Will you have the 30'x40' silage tarps in stock soon???
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Hopefully in the next few weeks. Plastic is in short supply due to COVID and that likely will continue. As soon as we get some cut, they're gone shortly after we put them back on the site.

Greg should try a Jimmy Nardello Pepper they have likely the highest bricks of the pepers and a wonderful flavor they grill well with any meat and onions and are very productive plants. I would almost bet that they would be one of your best sellers given time.

We've heard that is a good one! Thanks for the suggestion.

When we're these planted. I did watch a video. And started your leak, then frost and freeze. Maybe I should start more? I did direct seed.

We planted those onions back in late October.

I asked my local co-op one time how to I could prevent all the diseases from getting my tomatoes and they said by not growing tomatoes. Lol My diseases I mostly deal with is early blight and blossom end rot. We love our tomatoes though so will keep growing.🍅❤️👩🌾 Thank you for all the info. And AMEN on creamin your corn.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
He's right! If you grow tomatoes long enough, you're going to get one of them. FYI Blossom End Rot is not a disease. It's a calcium deficiency.

What if you don’t have enough garden space to rotate?
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Just do the best you can. Think about the garden in sections and try not to plant certain crops (tomatoes, squash, cukes especially) in the exact same spot every year.

I have to use city water at my house for drip irrigation. I am concerned about the chlorine in the water. Do you think those in line chlorine filters would reduce output enough to make the drip tape not work or the fertigation set up not work?
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
As long as your flow rate is still in the range of a couple gallons per minute, you should be fine.

I use woven ground cover, I have drip irrigation and prune lower leaves up at least a foot. I still get disease due to the splash when it rains I’m assuming. I know you all don’t use it but any ideas how to fix this? Anyway to disinfect the cover itself, I save it and use the same stuff every year.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Hmm. That's definitely likely your problem if you're using the same cover every year. Not sure of any easy, feasible way to disinfect it.

If you spray tomato plants with neem or hort oil in the late evening, will it burn your plants if it gets above 80 degrees the next afternoon ? I’m here in SW Florida and it gets above 80 most days starting in March.
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
Usually if you spray late in the evening, you'll be fine. Just don't spray it once temps start to climb into the 90s during the day.

I looked for your multiplying onions on web site and have never been able to find them??
@gardeningwithhoss3 жыл бұрын
We have to wait until we harvest the current crop, and then dry them after harvesting. They'll probably be ready to sell on the site come fall, when most folks will need to plant them.
