This is a comment from a year later; it is too bad the son had to leave and not only that but left the organization completely, not promoting Hoss Tools any longer and never mentioning his dad or mom. I think it's important for new gardeners to expect failures in the first year. Everyone experiences them, even in their 10th year. Now, the issue is going to be pressure. I grew up in the garden, and but I still feel more pressure to have success, and put up enough, in a way I've never felt pressure before, as I'm sure many gardeners are feeling.

If you're hand watering, put a tablespoon per gallon of water. If you're using the injector, put a couple cups in the tank. Go Dawgs!

Excellent show, guys! And y'all are sure right about new gardeners. I've been helping a couple of people get a garden started, and Lord have mercy! It's so hard to have to tell someone that they have to wait before they plant things down here. It's fixin' to get really hot here in Florida, and it's too late to plant a lot of things here. Spinach, lettuce cabbages, etc, are just about done here. You might can plant them in the Fall and pray we don't get a really cold November/December, but Spring veggies just ain't happening now. We might be able to get one more round of bush beans, or rattlesnake pole beans might make, but its not too likely if they're not in the ground already. Folks got to think about what can take the heat, and that's the hardest thing I had to learn when I first started gardening here. As for getting a lot of food out of a small garden, once someone learns when to plant what, they can grow a LOT of good food. I'm living proof of that. You folks have helped me to maximize my yields dramatically! God willin', this year is going to be even better! Now, for the tomatoes. Have you guys taken a look at the Tachi tomato plants? Mine, so far, are seriously out performing my Brickyards and Bella Rosas. I'm keeping track and will let y'all know how they do.

I've told many people that what I grow is seasonal, and just because you see it in the store doesnt mean it can grow here, in Florida. Many have asked about my spinach, told them to come back and ask again in October November and they give me a confused look. It turns into a learning experience. But like they said each year you learn something and you get better

Mentoring is the best way to learn to garden. I'm old and have been gardening all my life. I learned from my grandmother and mother. Now I'm teaching/mentoring my 10 yr granddaughter to garden. It's a skill set that important to pass down to later generations. New gardeners would benefit from a mentor or mentoring program.

My garden used to be about that size but this year but, I'm making it bigger this year (that was my plan before this pandemic) and I amended the soil of the new part as well and tarped it off to kill the grass and other weeds. I had to retire July 2018 long cancer doing good know.last year first time in 19 years being home to plant an work a garden.over the road truck driver .Georgia drivers can’t drive ( Atlanta).Garden last year was 40 feet by 90 feet worked it with a hole this year I have a hoss high arch used it first time to day to open up ferrous for fertilizer I like it work’s good I may have to uses a hole a little. I have two 5x10 raised beds and two 20 gallon buckets between them. I have tomatoes, squash, cucumber, watermelons started from seeds indoors. I plan to plant okra seeds also. You can plant a variety of crops in a small area as long as you know how wide the plant spreads. I stuffed my garden a few years ago and could not get in the bed. So now I have more varieties and less quantities. 1 or 2 plants of each variety.

With 35+ years experience of home gardening in northeast KS, it seems we're learning more each year. My husband's early life at various farm work, my Kansas State University extension courses, excellent local suppliers, and sweat equity help our veggies, fruit trees, grape arbor, herbs, and ornamentals stay productive. Very good advice for beginners, today's new gardeners are at an advantage with KZbin channels such as yours. Since 1977 , I took advantage of purchasing different garden books for my garden library . PBS tv ran one of the first garden shows every week called "Crockett's Victory Garden, " followed by the book by the same name. One of the best gardening books for anyone is still "Joy of Gardening" by Dick Raymond, which came out in 1982 and is still around for sale used. Vidalia onions have yet to appear up here in N.H. Good natured rumor up here is....Georgia is the Vidalia Capitol ! Thanks for the video.....

I live in Arizona and Bermuda grass is everywhere when I want to get rid of it I plowed the ground once I cover it with black plastic and try to keep it from getting any water if you're in Arizona you want to do it before the monsoon I haven't had any grass growing for for 10 yrs. Good choices for a small garden.

Dang ! You pulled those thoughts straight out of my head. I not only firmly believe that Everybody has a Super Power at something, but has spoke about it for many years ! Unfortunately some people, for what ever reason, never seems to find what that is. I, like you, found out early that I had the ability to repair almost anything if given enough time and materials. Don't like Tooting my own horn because of the my previous statement, but I did work for a Fortune 500 company that did not hire anyone who wasn't good at their job, enough said. THOSE ONIONS are BOSS. Don't know what it is but Georgia makes some Darn Fine Onions, pretty sure those growing them has a lot to do with it.

I keep seeing new gardeners excited about planting using the 3 sisters. Year after year. They have no idea it is dried beans and maize, not green beans and sweet corn. Doomed to fail.

Planting my first garden in 10 years. Spaghetti sauce is my goal, with a few squash. Still got room for a vertical crop, probably okra..but I'm allergic to legumes so... yeah looking at quail cages too.

Dont forget that you can use welded wire fence around your garden and grow alot of beans up that as well. We have welded wire around most of our 22x26 gardening area and we use that wire space to grow our beans up and leave the middle for the rest of what we love.

@@gardeningwithhoss i sent yall a email but im not to sure it went thru but figured id ask here just in case it didnt. How would you guys practice crop rotation in smaller gardening plots like this? I know in a video i seen yall made bout okra you said its key to rotate them so within 3 years they aint in the same spot and that helps prevent root knot damage.

Just don't plant the same crop in the same row every year. That's the best you dan do. You might even consider growing something like okra every other year. Grow a bunch one year, preserve it so you'll have it.

Great gardening show and I have learned a lot from watching, listening and putting into practice. I am having a little problem and a question, I cut my potatoes to get them ready to plant. Well since the first of April we have had a lot of snow so there sits my potato slips waiting to be planted. Now finally weather is prefect to plant, so I gather my slips and half have a white mold on them some have turned black. Are these safe to plant or should I just toss and start over?

FELLAS, great show. Was catching up on my row by rows and turns out that the way y’all laid the small plots out is pretty much the same way I have my 15x40 laid out. For the last 12 years I’ve mainly grown by Aquaponics and Hydroponics. However, this year I’m strictly in the dirt due to working out of town in Virginia by way of South Mississippi. I rented myself a community garden play and making a go of it. Planted my pole beans (rattlesnake and blue lake) and also Peter Pan and Patty pan squash. Beans popped but no squash. They (squash) weren’t from y’all, shame on me. So I ordered some Gold Star, Pascola Zucchini and Spineless Zucchini from y’all to replace the pan squash. I’m also ordering the South Anna Butternut today. The tomatoes I ordered from y’all are Summer Pick, Hybrid Roma and Red Snapper. Being up here in Virginia I decided to wait on my maters and I’m glad I did because of this cold snap. I think this summer is gonna be mild and I’ll have maters well into summer. Thanks for all you fellas and your team does. I’m a huge fan and can’t wait to have my own dirt garden of my own back home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I’m still always gonna have my Aquaponics and Hydroponic systems though lol. Thx y’all.

Love the show! I garden in small beds, no till. Living in an apartment and just moved in but working on getting beds going so we can grow about a row just outside the fence. In north TX I know we are a little behind, but going to get it caught up. Any suggestions for a couple of things that will be good in a pot on the patio and give good production? Trying to use everything the dog won’t run on.

Thanks for showing your winter squash transplants in your 162 cell tray. How many days did it take to get to that point? When did you sow those seeds? Do you transplant at the first true leaf stage?

Those were planted about 3-4 weeks ago. They're ready to go in the ground when they can be easily pulled from the trays.

I know gardening is something were everyone has their way of doing things, curious to see what both of your opinions are on best planting/care for tomatoes and what you each do differently (if anything). one thing i believe you should have mentioned to new gardeners is please check your Frost dates, some northerner cant plant any of those mentioned on what you would plant if you had to plant now on a 20x20. may have some people throw that in and get a frost and not be to happy not realize what has happend .

Cucumbers, pole beans, even some smaller winter squash like delicata or sweet dumpling can be grown vertically.

Looks like I have about 20x60" of garden space left after spring planting. I was thinking about sending it with sunn hemp by May 1. Our first frost is listed as Oct 18, zone 7b. Would the hemp be ready to cut so I could plant fall corn at the end of July? Thanks, love your show.

To kill crabgrass I solarize my beds every 4 - 5 years. 12' x 50' painter's plastic is $12 at Lowes. I weigh down the edges of the plastic, leave in place for 30 days. It kills plant roots and weed seeds. I usually don't have a weed problem for 2 - 4 years.

That's a good way to do it. You can even pull back the tarp and till the area mid-tarping to further reduce the weed seed bank.

Guys, I’m new to your channel, enjoying all your information. Question for you, I’ve been gardening for twenty plus years, this year I’ve had several neighbors ask me to till a new garden for them. I haven’t charged them a penny, but now I have others asking for me to do this, what would be a fair price for a 20 x 20? My new Grillo, with a rotary plow and tiller attachment are getting a work out. I’ll be placing a order soon, thanks
