How Do I Do Gospel-Centered Mission Work with Students? Part 2: Intervening Justice |Philip Walkley and Marlon “Big Dog” Brown
Discussion Questions
- In general, how do you define the word “justice”? How do you think your students would define this word?
- In this video, Philip gives us two different definitions of justice. Discuss the similarities and differences between these two definitions:
“Biblical justice is the proper execution of God’s laws among God’s people.” - Eric Mason
“We do justice when we give all human beings their due as creations of God. Doing justice includes not only the righting of wrongs, but of generosity and social concern, especially towards the poor and vulnerable. This kind of life reflects the character of God. It consists of a broad range of activities, from simple, fair, and honest dealings with people in everyday life, to regular, radically generous giving of your time and money, and to activism that seeks to end particular forms of injustice, violence, and oppression.” - Tim Keller
- Think about what Big Dog said regarding the way he wished he had received justice during his season of homelessness. What are some ways you can get your youth group to actively meet the physical needs of those in your community?
- Philip mentions that like Jesus, “we need to be willing to give up our own comforts for the benefit of others…which will often involve sacrifice, discomfort, and loss… all for the sake of meeting the needs of others.” Do you think the students in your youth group would respond well to this kind of discomfort? Why or why not? How can you encourage your students toward more sacrificial service?
- Philip says that this generation is active and wants to make a difference. Do you agree or disagree? How do you see this in your students?
At Rooted, we have a heart for children to develop faith in Jesus Christ that lasts. The most influential factor in determining whether a child will attend church as an adult is an accurate understanding of the Gospel- God’s unconditional love for sinners through Jesus Christ. Therefore, we are equipping leaders and parents throughout the country to practice gospel-centered youth ministry in the church. We long for every child to hear the gospel of grace, be taught the word of God, be mentored and discipled, and be prayed over and for- through their church and at home each week. This KZbin channel is filled with clips from each facet of our ministry.
