I guess we all have stories. I am a 70 year old female who has had nose problems most of my life. When younger picked my nose a lot. It always seemed full of crud. When I was 19 I broke my nose. Back in the 60s the only way to describe the repair was that they took a rubber mallet and a blunt chisel, held my head and wacked at my nose a few times. Brought me over to a mirror, as the blood was gushing out and asked if it was okay. Do you think I was going to say still a bump on the side, hit me some more. Nope I said it was fine. A year later another break. I guess it was a clean break Dr lined it up and pushed. Through the years I have had, stuffy nose, some difficulty breathing, phlegm in my throat, crustiness on the inside of nose and chronic sinusitis. Currently I have lost most my sense of smell. Because I have a lot of crustiness in my nose I am always blowing and trying to get it out. Also sometimes my ear hurts. No one until last year said I had a deviated septum! I can handle not having as clear breathing and the bump in my nose. I just want the crustiness to stop, yes I have tried thinks to help. I do not want surgery, not at this age. Any suggestions? Thanks

I'm sorry to hear all of the trouble you have had with your nose. I would recommend Ayr gel twice a day during the day and vaseline ointment every night to moisturize the inside of the nose to prevent the crusting from forming. It will take several months for it to improve with this method so you'll need to be consistent.

I don't quite understand. You didn't explain WHY an open approach is required when your deviated septum is the CAUSE of the crooked appearance. Shouldn't straightening the Septum straighten the appearance IF the deviation is the cause of the crookedness, regardless of internal or open approach?????

I can’t breath out of my left nostril properly and I’m pretty sure it’s a deviated septum. Sometimes I get a sting type of feeling that shoots through that side. It’s not that bad but I do have to scrunch my nose and close me eyes for a sec bc it’s a very tingly type feeling. Idk if I explained that right but could it be bc of the deviated septum? I also have a whistling noise that happens even when I breath normally through my nose 24/7
@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rameen, it could be a deviated septum. To confirm, you would need an examination with an ENT doctor to look inside your nose. Sometimes whistling can be a sign of a perforation or hole in the septum.

Hey doctor, I can’t breathe out my right nose, but the weird thing is sometimes it switches, for example, one time I wake up and my left nose is clogged, and other times the right nose is clogged. Right now I’m having trouble with the right nose. My nose is always really runny. I’ve had symptoms like this in the past. My nose was runny and clogged about a week ago but it went away, Maybe it’s allergies? I’ve done tests like this in the past where I look up, and see if my nose is sinking in or not. My nose fortunately does not sink it. Doctor let me know what you think.

Is fixing a deviated septum can only be performed on severe cases like u cant no longer breath properly? Or is it advisable for as long as its deviated or crooked?.. and weird thing is when i broke my nasal septum it didn't bleed though but obviously its crooked.. been years since then.. What specialist shall i seek for a consultation?? Thanks doc if u would respond here 🙂
@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 4 жыл бұрын
Fixing a deviated septum can be performed in mild or severe cases. Of course, the degree of improvement is always better in severe cases. The important aspect is to determine if the deviation is truly causing a collapse or narrowing of the airway on the same side of the symptoms. There can be other causes for the narrowing such as a collapsed internal valve which would require additional work. You should seek out a plastic surgeon or ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist who has extensive experience with rhinoplasty surgery, particularly functional surgery NOT just cosmetic experience. Search for board certification and review before and after galleries of their crooked noses.

Hi doctor! I wonder if you have ever read on or seen cases where mental health problems affect the nose? I think I have a deviated septum but after being diagnosed with anxiety, I think my turbinates tend to enlarge and restrict breathing often, is this something recognised in your field. Also, just curious if a horizontal line on the bridge of the nose which developed after trauma years ago could be an indication of a broken nose. I should’ve gone to a doctor then :). Thanks

I’m 16 years old and I have always had a really obvious crooked nose. My nose bridge leans towards the right and I often struggle to breathe through my left nostril (it sometimes switches between nostrils). This has caused me sleeping problems. Most nights I can’t sleep or I can only sleep in certain position. It has also caused me headaches, nose bleeds and I believe it has also caused my dark under eye circles. Is this a deviated septum? Do I need surgery and if so would it straighten the bridge of my nose and affect it’s appearance?

@JamesCarmichael
@JamesCarmichael 3 жыл бұрын
Here's a question. I was told that a deviated septum shouldn't be an issue since one nostril will be closed, but the other will be doubly open due to the bend. But is that really true? My septum pretty much covers my left nostril, but my right one is just normal. I feel impaired by it and often just unable to breath to maximum capacity.
@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 3 жыл бұрын
If the deviated septum is severe enough to collapse one nostril completely, then breathing will be impaired whether subjectively or objectively. You will have the sensation of decreased flow and the flow that does happen tends to be more turbulent in the nostril that is more open. Also, the inferior turbinate tends to enlarge on the side that is more open to fill the space in order to humidify the air. This causes the size of the airway to be smaller than if both nostrils were open.

@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sal, although an open septoplasty would correct your breathing issues, it may not correct the crooked appearance because a component of the crooked appearance is often due to the nasal bones being deviated as well. Since the nasal bones are not addressed in an open septoplasty your nose could still appear crooked after surgery. And unfortunately, insurance companies do not cover correcting the nasal bones as they deem it a "rhinoplasty" rather than a "septoplasty"

Hi doctor I recently found out that I have a nasal fracture and a deviated septum. Hearing this I was glad to finally know why I my nose goes to left and why I have trouble breathing. However during my consultation I was told that the only possible way to improve my breathing was to enlarge my nose. The surgeon than proceeded to advise me to wait a little longer and that he did not want to perform the surgery because he did not want to enlarge my nose. ( he did claim that I will need to get it fixed eventually). At my second consultation with a different surgeon I was told me to continue with my nasal sprays and to buy the NeilMed sinus rinse . He too advised me too lay off considering surgery as I’m too young( I’m 17). However I have been having issues breathing through my left nostril for years now and I want to get it fixed before I move away for college. What do advise I should do? Will insurance cover my nasal fracture? Did my nasal fracture cause my deviated septum?

I’m waiting for another apt from another ENT as I can’t just can’t live like this anymore. I really would like to know, by having my deviated septum fixed, could it help reduce my symptoms of UARS ? Could it completely get rid of it? For some reason during the 22x per hour of shallow breathing I experience, I don’t seem to breathe through my mouth! Thank you ♥️

You have a complicated question that I would not be able to answer for you definitively here. The detailed results of your sleep study and a dedicated airway exam would be needed to determine whether surgery would reduce your symptoms or even be a cure for UARS in your case. Certainly, the moderately deviated septum sounds promising in being a cause for your UARS but in my experience the cause of the restriction is often multilevel.

Nose surgery can have a positive effect on sleep apnea, but I would not recommend fixing the deviated septum for snoring alone. If you don't have any breathing difficulty from your nose, there are more risks undergoing nasal surgery than benefits in your case.

@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 4 жыл бұрын
The risk of septoplasty surgery is that you may have new breathing issues after surgery or that the crooked appearance is not completely fixed. You should expect a straighter nose but not a STRAIGHT nose as the deviation in the cartilage is hard to correct with 100% guarantee. Regarding whether it might be worth it to undergo surgery, only you can answer the question of whether the risk is worth it once you weigh the possibilities of new breathing issues and your nose looking better and tempered with the fact that it may not look completely straight. There are risks with any surgery and you will have to weigh that with the cosmetic concern you have with your nose.

Start by looking for a board certified facial plastic surgeon near your area and then look at their reviews, credentials, and before and after images in their gallery. Hope this helps you on your journey!

What if the bridge of the nose isn't crooked but the bottom part is, open or closed? And is there bone in the middle to lower part of the nose as well?
@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mihiraan, the middle to lower 1/3 of the nose is mostly cartilage. If the bottom 1/3 of your nose is crooked, then a majority of the time an open approach is best in order to reposition and reshape the tip cartilages.

@FaceliftExpert

Hi J Allson! There is always a chance that the nose can go back a little bit to the side it was deviated to as the cartilage in the nose has memory. If the nose is quite crooked and deviated, I usually tell my patients that they should expect improvement but not perfection. It is realistic to find the nose "straighter" after surgery but not for it to be "perfectly straight".

@@WholesaleJewelleryAustralia There are not any studies on this. If the crooked nose is mainly due to bone then it is not common to bend back. He told me a revision could improve it a bit but not fully and it could possibly shift again. is it possible to prevent that? I really want my nose to stay in the midline of my face

Hi Pila, it is hard to get a nose completely straight particularly if you have some asymmetries to begin with in the face. It is true that the nose could possibly shift again if the cartilage has memory and wants to lean back to the same place. We often use casts on the nose and taping as well as daily massage to prevent the nose from shifting after surgery. However, it is still possible to see the nose shift over the years as well.

What to eat? Etc.). Thank you so much for your time.

Hi Haider, a concussion is a BIG deal and trauma to the brain shouldn't be taken lightly. I would recommend you seek out a medical doctor for a good examination just to be sure. Any advice I can give you here is not meant to replace medical advice from seeking out a medical professional in person. That being said, I would recommend treatments and food that improve blood flow to the brain such as hyperbaric oxygen treatment, reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, increasing garlic, fish oil supplements (DHEA/EPA), and antioxidants (vitamin C, E, blueberries). I would also increase your sleep during this time. In regards to your nose, massage and taping is helpful. I advise taping at night and massaging during the day in the opposite direction of the deviation. The taping and massage is most helpful early on and becomes less productive 6-8 weeks after the injury.

@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aima, most septoplasties are covered by insurance as long as you meet criteria based on your exam and your history. Whether the septoplasty will straighten your nose is a harder question to answer without looking at you in person. This is because the septum is connected to the bones of your nose. The bones may be crooked as well and simply correcting the septum on the inside may not completely straighten the nose. The size of your nostrils should become more similar to each other after undergoing a septoplasty.

I recently noticed that I have a tiny little line on the side of the bridge of my nose and I thought it was a wrinkle at first, but I also have a little bump on the bridge of my nose and have always had trouble breathing on my right nostril. when I press down on the bump it clears my airway, I have only ever had one big hit on my nose but that was way back in kindergarten and didn’t think much of it (I’m 30 now). Could that be a deviated septum or even a possible old fracture?

It could possibly be both. The only definitive way to know is to get an examination by an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) surgeon or have a CT scan to evaluate the structures of your nose. The CT scan is not needed if you are seeking the opinion of an ENT surgeon because he or she will be able to tell you if there is a deviated septum or old nasal bone fracture and from there determine whether you would benefit from surgery or not.

@siemenssx1 No, a deviated septum is not the only cause of poor nasal breathing. Based on your description, you may have a narrow nasal airway due to under development of the middle of your face. This is a more difficult problem to solve and may require you to meet with an oral maxillofacial surgeon for Lefort I midface advancement surgery. Additionally, if your nostrils collapse, you may need structural support to be added to prevent the nostrils from collapsing. A thorough examination would be needed in order to determine if you could benefit from this procedure of adding structural support. This is different from a septoplasty.

Septoplasty surgery should not change the appearance of your nose. However, the doctor is correct in that it will not help your sinus pain and may temporarily make it worse. Septoplasty surgery would only be beneficial if you clearly have congestion that is more prominent on one side of the nose and is constant. Whether the surgery is necessary, can only be determined by you. Do you want to breath better? If the answer is yes, then proceed with septoplasty surgery. Sinus surgery can also be completed at the same time to improve the opening to your sinuses and decrease your sinus pressure and pain. This is probably why the CT scan is being ordered.

I still can’t breathe out due to the recovery period but my nose bled and excreted mucus since I had the opp till now as it’s draining all the gunk out. Pain level was so minimal! It’s unbelievable. The discomfort was 10/10 though- it honestly felt like I was iffi aged. So far I would recommend the surgery but try not to look in to other peoples experience so much as this can subconsciously affect you if you were to undergo this

And which one hurts more the open approach or closed one ? Please respond

Depending on how crooked your nose it, I may do an open or a closed approach. The surgery causes some discomfort for patients but most are able to tolerate the discomfort without using strong pain medications. However, every person is different and I would not be able to speak for you individually.

Hi Nadia, braces should not affect your breathing. In fact certain dental appliances can help to improve your breathing.

Hi doc, Hope you’re well. Just have a question i’d like to get off my chest if you don’t mind answering. I haven’t got a crooked nose but towards the top just wear my glasses sit, it is bent in the sense there’s a dip where my glasses sit so from the side it looks bent. I thought that it was natural and that i’d need rhinoplasty but then i realised that i have a deviated septum a from one side of my nose it’s pretty hard to breathe at times. I was wondering if by getting septoplasty done to straighten the septum IF it would also straighten my nose so it appears straighter if you look at it from the side or straight on. Thanks i’m advance ;)
@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ali, I'm not sure I can answer that question without examining your nose. It can be complicated since the septum is also attached to your nose bones. If the bones are crooked, then a septoplasty alone will not completely straighten your nose.

Hi Giana, there are risks with any surgery and unfortunately most surgeons cannot guarantee perfection every time. We certainly don't expect the nose to droop right after surgery since there is work we do to support the tip. However, I cannot speak for every surgeon.

Can a deviated septum affect your swallowing, recentley i find when i swallow, my throat clicks and my ears are feeling clogged , i had a devauted septum 2 years ago from jaw surgery, and i do have breathing issues on one side.
@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 3 жыл бұрын
A deviated septum does not affect your swallowing. However, the muscles around the soft palate which rises when you swallow (and can create this clicking noise) and the muscles in the throat are attached to the eustachian tube. There may be some insufficiency with these muscles after jaw surgery rather than from a deviated septum.

hi my noses actual bone kinda goes to one side, and i was told i have a deviated septum like at the top of my nose which also goes in the same direction of my nose bone. i don’t think i have any breathing problems but i thinks that’s because my septum isn’t blocking my nasal passage because it’s just following my nose shape, but i don’t really know. i was wondering if straightening my septum will make things worse? also i asked my doctor if a deviated septum causes a lot of headaches and he said yes but i’m not sure how this would work, so could you explain please? hope that makes sense :)

A deviated septum may narrow the airway on one side of the nose, creating buildup of mucus and pressure within the sinuses. This can result in the headaches that you may be experiencing.

Daviate septum and polyps cause facial pain??? Every time i feel pain and pressure on right side of nose and under eyes area plz plz suggest me what should i do
@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 4 жыл бұрын
Nabin, I would recommend you seek out an Ear, nose and throat specialist (ENT) to get an examination of your nose. Polyps can block the sinus passages contributing to the pressure and pain you feel. Ultimately, treatment starts with medications such as topical nasal steroid sprays or drugs you take by mouth to shrink the polyps. Surgery is not the first option.

How much is septoplasty for someone without insurance and does a deviated septum cause anosmia I been dealing with this for almost a year 😭
@FaceliftExpert
@FaceliftExpert 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a deviated septum can cause anosmia if there is very little airflow in the nose. However, the anosmia can also be due to previous trauma, viral infection (cold), or other reasons. A septoplasty surgery may or may not resolve your anosmia. Without help from insurance septoplasty surgery costs differ from surgeon to surgeon. The range may be from $5,000 to $15,000 depending on the location and expertise of the surgeon.

@@Taethegemini92 There is a low chance that your smell and taste will come back if it has been almost 1 year. There are not a lot of therapies available with high success rate. A course of steroids and nasal steroid sprays could be helpful. Also, Zinc and magnesium supplementation may provide additional help.

Most likely it will be covered by insurance. However, a medical examination with appropriate paperwork documenting the failure of medications to help with breathing is usually needed and every insurance carrier has their own rules and guidelines.

Could that be from the splints in my nose or do you think it’s possible that a closed procedure can change the shape of the nose ever so slightly?

@@faisalk379 Hi Faisal, every case is different so I cannot give a blanket statement on when office workers can return to work after rhinoplasty. Most of my patients are able to return after 1-2 weeks. However, if they are wearing an N95 or anything on the nose such as a tight mask, they must be out of work for longer (about 6 weeks). If there is a gap where the nasal bridge is after rhinoplasty, perhaps the nose dropped. It will be important to go back to see your surgeon for an examination.
