I guess we all have stories. I am a 70 year old female who has had nose problems most of my life. When younger picked my nose a lot. It always seemed full of crud. When I was 19 I broke my nose. Back in the 60s the only way to describe the repair was that they took a rubber mallet and a blunt chisel, held my head and wacked at my nose a few times. Brought me over to a mirror, as the blood was gushing out and asked if it was okay. Do you think I was going to say still a bump on the side, hit me some more. Nope I said it was fine. A year later another break. I guess it was a clean break Dr lined it up and pushed. Through the years I have had, stuffy nose, some difficulty breathing, phlegm in my throat, crustiness on the inside of nose and chronic sinusitis. Currently I have lost most my sense of smell. Because I have a lot of crustiness in my nose I am always blowing and trying to get it out. Also sometimes my ear hurts. No one until last year said I had a deviated septum! I can handle not having as clear breathing and the bump in my nose. I just want the crustiness to stop, yes I have tried thinks to help. I do not want surgery, not at this age. Any suggestions? Thanks

I'm sorry to hear all of the trouble you have had with your nose. I would recommend Ayr gel twice a day during the day and vaseline ointment every night to moisturize the inside of the nose to prevent the crusting from forming. It will take several months for it to improve with this method so you'll need to be consistent.

I can’t breath out of my left nostril properly and I’m pretty sure it’s a deviated septum. Sometimes I get a sting type of feeling that shoots through that side. It’s not that bad but I do have to scrunch my nose and close me eyes for a sec bc it’s a very tingly type feeling. Idk if I explained that right but could it be bc of the deviated septum? I also have a whistling noise that happens even when I breath normally through my nose 24/7

Hi Rameen, it could be a deviated septum. To confirm, you would need an examination with an ENT doctor to look inside your nose. Sometimes whistling can be a sign of a perforation or hole in the septum.

Right now I’m having trouble with the right nose. My nose is always really runny. I’ve had symptoms like this in the past. My nose was runny and clogged about a week ago but it went away, Maybe it’s allergies? I’ve done tests like this in the past where I look up, and see if my nose is sinking in or not. My nose fortunately does not sink it. Doctor let me know what you think.

Is fixing a deviated septum can only be performed on severe cases like u cant no longer breath properly? Or is it advisable for as long as its deviated or crooked?.. and weird thing is when i broke my nasal septum it didn't bleed though but obviously its crooked.. been years since then.. What specialist shall i seek for a consultation?? Thanks doc if u would respond here 🙂
@FaceliftExpert4 жыл бұрын
Fixing a deviated septum can be performed in mild or severe cases. Of course, the degree of improvement is always better in severe cases. The important aspect is to determine if the deviation is truly causing a collapse or narrowing of the airway on the same side of the symptoms. There can be other causes for the narrowing such as a collapsed internal valve which would require additional work. You should seek out a plastic surgeon or ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist who has extensive experience with rhinoplasty surgery, particularly functional surgery NOT just cosmetic experience. Search for board certification and review before and after galleries of their crooked noses.

Hello doctor I was diagnosed with a deviated septum. I also have a crooked nose externally. Will a standard septoplasty straighten my nose on the outside aswell or just on the inside?
@JamesCarmichael3 жыл бұрын
Here's a question. I was told that a deviated septum shouldn't be an issue since one nostril will be closed, but the other will be doubly open due to the bend. But is that really true? My septum pretty much covers my left nostril, but my right one is just normal. I feel impaired by it and often just unable to breath to maximum capacity.
@FaceliftExpert3 жыл бұрын
If the deviated septum is severe enough to collapse one nostril completely, then breathing will be impaired whether subjectively or objectively. You will have the sensation of decreased flow and the flow that does happen tends to be more turbulent in the nostril that is more open. Also, the inferior turbinate tends to enlarge on the side that is more open to fill the space in order to humidify the air. This causes the size of the airway to be smaller than if both nostrils were open.

@FaceliftExpert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sal, although an open septoplasty would correct your breathing issues, it may not correct the crooked appearance because a component of the crooked appearance is often due to the nasal bones being deviated as well. Since the nasal bones are not addressed in an open septoplasty your nose could still appear crooked after surgery. And unfortunately, insurance companies do not cover correcting the nasal bones as they deem it a "rhinoplasty" rather than a "septoplasty"

You have a complicated question that I would not be able to answer for you definitively here. The detailed results of your sleep study and a dedicated airway exam would be needed to determine whether surgery would reduce your symptoms or even be a cure for UARS in your case. Certainly, the moderately deviated septum sounds promising in being a cause for your UARS but in my experience the cause of the restriction is often multilevel.

@FaceliftExpert4 жыл бұрын
The risk of septoplasty surgery is that you may have new breathing issues after surgery or that the crooked appearance is not completely fixed. You should expect a straighter nose but not a STRAIGHT nose as the deviation in the cartilage is hard to correct with 100% guarantee. Regarding whether it might be worth it to undergo surgery, only you can answer the question of whether the risk is worth it once you weigh the possibilities of new breathing issues and your nose looking better and tempered with the fact that it may not look completely straight. There are risks with any surgery and you will have to weigh that with the cosmetic concern you have with your nose.

Yes, septoplasty surgery should help his breathing if the deviated septum is the main cause of his trouble breathing. Sometimes there are other contributing causes to the impaired breathing such as a collapsed nasal valve, large turbinates or allergy symptoms.

Hi, I already had a rhinoplasty a few years ago but my nose is still slightly crooked. So I went to an Ent and he told me that my nose is crooked because of asymmetry in my face. He told me a revision could improve it a bit but not fully and it could possibly shift again. is it possible to prevent that? I really want my nose to stay in the midline of my face
@FaceliftExpert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pila, it is hard to get a nose completely straight particularly if you have some asymmetries to begin with in the face. It is true that the nose could possibly shift again if the cartilage has memory and wants to lean back to the same place. We often use casts on the nose and taping as well as daily massage to prevent the nose from shifting after surgery. However, it is still possible to see the nose shift over the years as well.

Hi Doctor Tansavatdi, two days ago. I had gotten punched in the face while practicing boxing with a friend and feel as if I had a deviated septum because of the impact. I am 18 and do not want surgery, but rather have any other methods such as massages or any devices that will assist in fixing the septum be suggested. In addition, (a little off-topic from the video) I had gotten a very mild concussion that has gotten better with nausea and headaches without any treatment, any recommendations for recovery (Cycling? What to eat? Etc.). Thank you so much for your time.
@FaceliftExpert4 жыл бұрын
Hi Haider, a concussion is a BIG deal and trauma to the brain shouldn't be taken lightly. I would recommend you seek out a medical doctor for a good examination just to be sure. Any advice I can give you here is not meant to replace medical advice from seeking out a medical professional in person. That being said, I would recommend treatments and food that improve blood flow to the brain such as hyperbaric oxygen treatment, reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, increasing garlic, fish oil supplements (DHEA/EPA), and antioxidants (vitamin C, E, blueberries). I would also increase your sleep during this time. In regards to your nose, massage and taping is helpful. I advise taping at night and massaging during the day in the opposite direction of the deviation. The taping and massage is most helpful early on and becomes less productive 6-8 weeks after the injury.
@aimakhokhar6564 жыл бұрын
Hello I hope you answer me, but It looks like I have a deviated septum because I can’t breathe from my nostrils sometimes, it also switches nostrils and it gets worse when I sleep. Also my deviated septum makes my nose crooked. So if I get a septoplasty will that straighten my nose ? Also one of my nostrils is bigger then the other will that also get fixed if I get a septoplasty? , and my last question is if most septoplasty’s are covered by insurance?
@FaceliftExpert4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aima, most septoplasties are covered by insurance as long as you meet criteria based on your exam and your history. Whether the septoplasty will straighten your nose is a harder question to answer without looking at you in person. This is because the septum is connected to the bones of your nose. The bones may be crooked as well and simply correcting the septum on the inside may not completely straighten the nose. The size of your nostrils should become more similar to each other after undergoing a septoplasty.

Hi Dr. I have a quick question. Is there anyway to know if I have fractured or broken my nose in the past? I recently noticed that I have a tiny little line on the side of the bridge of my nose and I thought it was a wrinkle at first, but I also have a little bump on the bridge of my nose and have always had trouble breathing on my right nostril. when I press down on the bump it clears my airway, I have only ever had one big hit on my nose but that was way back in kindergarten and didn’t think much of it (I’m 30 now). Could that be a deviated septum or even a possible old fracture?
@FaceliftExpert4 жыл бұрын
It could possibly be both. The only definitive way to know is to get an examination by an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) surgeon or have a CT scan to evaluate the structures of your nose. The CT scan is not needed if you are seeking the opinion of an ENT surgeon because he or she will be able to tell you if there is a deviated septum or old nasal bone fracture and from there determine whether you would benefit from surgery or not.

@siemenssx1 No, a deviated septum is not the only cause of poor nasal breathing. Based on your description, you may have a narrow nasal airway due to under development of the middle of your face. This is a more difficult problem to solve and may require you to meet with an oral maxillofacial surgeon for Lefort I midface advancement surgery. Additionally, if your nostrils collapse, you may need structural support to be added to prevent the nostrils from collapsing. A thorough examination would be needed in order to determine if you could benefit from this procedure of adding structural support. This is different from a septoplasty.

This means that the left side of your nose is narrowed because the wall that separates the two sides of your nose is caving into the left side of the nose. A bony spur is an extension of the bony part of the septum that is protruding into the left side of the nose.

@@adamyoussef6201 It's really hard to say whether this would have any effect on the physical appearance of your nose without examining you. Septoplasty surgery should not change the appearance of your nose. However, the doctor is correct in that it will not help your sinus pain and may temporarily make it worse. Septoplasty surgery would only be beneficial if you clearly have congestion that is more prominent on one side of the nose and is constant. Whether the surgery is necessary, can only be determined by you. Do you want to breath better? If the answer is yes, then proceed with septoplasty surgery. Sinus surgery can also be completed at the same time to improve the opening to your sinuses and decrease your sinus pressure and pain. This is probably why the CT scan is being ordered.

A deviated septum does not affect your swallowing. However, the muscles around the soft palate which rises when you swallow (and can create this clicking noise) and the muscles in the throat are attached to the eustachian tube. @@FaceliftExpert thank you for responding i can breathe out of my nose just fine most of the time but I do have times where I'm congested and the mucus is bubbly and sometimes very sticky I did have the flu before I lost my taste and smell 🤔

@@FaceliftExpert thank you for responding what do you think will help bring my smell and taste back?
@FaceliftExpert3 жыл бұрын
@@Taethegemini92 There is a low chance that your smell and taste will come back if it has been almost 1 year. There are not a lot of therapies available with high success rate. A course of steroids and nasal steroid sprays could be helpful. Also, Zinc and magnesium supplementation may provide additional help.

Is this covered by insurance?
@jeremiahrios87654 жыл бұрын
If it’s a deviated septum yes that means it would be a septoplasty not a rhinoplasty only thing that would change would be that bent septum
@FaceliftExpert3 жыл бұрын
Most likely it will be covered by insurance. However, a medical examination with appropriate paperwork documenting the failure of medications to help with breathing is usually needed and every insurance carrier has their own rules and guidelines.

Hello doc, I had a straight nose and i actually had an accident which resulted in deviated septum.will i get the same straight nose if i do septoplasty
@FaceliftExpert4 жыл бұрын
I am not sure what your question is and I would say that you should expect a straighter nose if the deviated septum is fixed but you can never guarantee 100% correction

Hi Doctor Tansavatdi, I just had a closed septoplasty done yesterday. I noticed today that my nose looks slightly upturned now (which is actually rather adorable). Could that be from the splints in my nose or do you think it’s possible that a closed procedure can change the shape of the nose ever so slightly?
@FaceliftExpert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Caitlin, unfortunately I believe the splints are lifting the tip of your nose. How does it look now that the splints have been removed?

@@FaceliftExpert there is a gap where the nasal bridge is after septoplasty How long can office workers return to work after rhinoplasty
@FaceliftExpert3 жыл бұрын
@@faisalk379 Hi Faisal, every case is different so I cannot give a blanket statement on when office workers can return to work after rhinoplasty. Most of my patients are able to return after 1-2 weeks. However, if they are wearing an N95 or anything on the nose such as a tight mask, they must be out of work for longer (about 6 weeks). If there is a gap where the nasal bridge is after rhinoplasty, perhaps the nose dropped. It will be important to go back to see your surgeon for an examination.
