How do you know if the comic that you are reading is the main universe continuity??
@DwayneTheGeek8 ай бұрын
@@Kornnado In Marvel Comics they usually tell you that it's in an alternate Universe or the What If... Comics. On the DC Comics sides they currently have Black Label and before it was Elseworlds. But again many of the comics will be very explicit tell it's in another universe.

Great overview on how to get into one of my favorite hobbies, reading comics! I always liked Stan Lee’s philosophy, which I think comic creators tend to adhere to in general, to keep in mind when writing the comics that any issue could be someone’s first. Below are a few suggestions that I think are good starting points for a couple of titles: Batman (my personal favorite): Batman Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzachelli Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman Dark Victory, both by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale Batman: The Court of Owls by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo X-Men: Grant Morrison’s run (with various artists, the most frequent of which I believe is Frank Quietly), which starts with the storyline E is For Extinction. It’s actually my 2nd or 3rd favorite X-Men run, but I think it’s probably the best jumping on point that’s easy to collect. Claremont’s is my favorite, but I think it’s pretty hard to collect all of it.
@Trekapedia8 ай бұрын
My suggestions for jumping on points are Superman: The Man Of Steel beginning with the reboot in 1986. I also suggest The Death and Return of Superman storyline. I’d include the Emerald Dawn storyline in Green Lantern where it rebooted the story, gave Hal Jordan’s origin, and is a good jumping on point.

@@Alice-me2qk in Emerald Dawn, they introduce Guy Gardner as well so that would be a good jumping on point. As for John Stewart, it's not a comic but I'd recommend the Justice League and JLU animated series

Spider-Man and Superman were my first two superhero’s back in the 80s. Even watched the Spiderman and his Amazing friends on tv. But when I got old enough to pay attention to story arcs, Xmen was my team. I collected and traded comics over the years but never really held on to any until I got older and got back into comics because of Deadpool. Deadpool comics would really be a trip for first time readers.

How I got started on comics were two reasons.1:My older brother 2:Comic Racks in convienant stores in the 80's.Very first comic I bought was Justice League International #11 and then it went on from there.Bought the trade paperback,I read it like it was actually the same.But my brother was a serial collector,we never lived together but when I visit,I just read his rack.But I pick up things in my spare time.Not into alot but I give some books a shot.

This video was so helpful. Thank you. My comic journey is still new, so I have so many questions. I watched the older Batman and Superman films and then the MCU films, not really making the connection that those characters came from comic books. When my city went into lockdown in 2020, I found myself watching YT videos about MCU theories and predictions. That's how I found Top Ten Nerd (and developed crushes on you and Sasha). Now, I follow both of your channels and love all the content. My biggest questions are about Mephisto. I saw so many theories about him being in WandaVision only to be disappointed not seeing a character I knew nothing about. I know he has ties to Spiderman, too, and I'd love to know where to start with Marvel's devil.

How to read a comic or manga ( I know what you said, but these are different directions) would be a good video. I’ve read thousands of comics, but I still sometimes read the wrong order. Also good comment about writers. I read a lot of Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and G Willow Wilson. I don’t like everything about their styles, and I don’t always like a particular series, but it is worth looking. Ryan North has been writing Famtastic Four stories that are one issue stories. It’s refreshing. I recommend Low by Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini for a “dying earth” meditation on hope and family. It’s worth remembering that there are many comics that are historical or (sometimes loosely) autobiographical. So if you don’t want full fiction, there are options. Since Pride Month is next month, I recommend Flamer by Mike Curato, about being closeted at Scout camp in the 90s.

The internet is your friend is the biggest takeaway I've had these last few years. There's definitely gatekeepers, but most people are welcoming. The last book I read was Flex Mentallo. I found it because of Reddit, and ordered it because I like Morrison, Quietly and find Doom Patrol characters weirdly fun. I totally agree about keeping in eye out for your favorite creators. Follow your curiosity. I knew Keanu's version of Constantine, wasn't comic accurate, but never got in to the comics untill seeing Matt Ryan in the NBC Constantine show

When I first got into comics I got hooked in by the cheap event crossover tactics. I picked up a few issues of Green Lantern and Batman because I was intrigued by the covers and within a year there was Identity Crisis even and lots of covers carried the identity crisis logo which I felt compelled to buy and then I got hooked on those series. Suckered right in 😄 That was when I was 19/20 though. I’m almost 40 now and don’t really buy any. Occasionally take out a Trade Paperback from the library.

I personally started collecting comics in the late 60’s when they were .15 cents a book, it is a far more expensive hobby now , so my recommendation is choose the titles you want to follow and stick with it as long as it interest you , because like the Circle Of Life …🎶 There’s More To See , Then Can Ever Be Seen 🎶 More To Read ,Then Can Ever Be Read 🎶 …for a almost impossible question to answer. The 90s cartoons introduced me to superheroes. My favs are Batman, Spiderman, and the X-men. Of course the Superman Christopher Reed movies where around as well. I got in to reading around the 2000s when the Fox X-men movies, also the fact of a friend sharing his collection with me. I dove into the X-men comics around the time where Storm, Rachel, and X23 where in the Savage Land. I own the Messiah complex omnibus, the Phoenix end song run as well. Now I love fcbd each year to get some free comics and maybe buy something. This year I got a trade paper back of a house of X storyline the one with Jean, Emma Storm, and Kurt. It's the one where Emma and Jean journey though Storms mind.

@@spinningtornado4543 I read it. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't horrible either. Just didn't care for the first issue, but I get it was a setup for what the writer wanted to do for a twist in the middle. I admit the power drainer gun made no sense and why they wouldn't use it later in the story, but I enjoyed the ending.

This was such a wonderful watch and needed in a growing market of content. My first exposure to graphic novels was The Dark Knight Returns and a dash of X-Men comics, eventually during high school was alot of post crisis DC, and Ultimate Universe runs, Runaways, then we get new 52, Image , Dark horse, some Earth One Stories, some Bryan Hitchman Avengers, then Rebirth, ALOT more adult novels like Scott Synders Severed, The Manhattan projects, powers, East to West etc. and the latest was the reintroduction of milestone media so it's been a wonderful ride the last 30 years 🙏🏾🙏🏾👑👑

I really liked Vanish from Image comics for a time. However, the ending felt very rushed to me. Concept is; what happens when you’re the chosen one (Harry Potter) but you peaked as a teenager? Also, you find out that all the superheroes currently saving the world are actually just retired death eaters from your past. Maybe you’ll enjoy the ending more than I did 🤷♂️

I really enjoyed the Black Cloak series. It is supernatural in the sense that it is set in a magical world. But this is when the magic has started to fade. Think like a fantasy land but what happens after the big battle, the great war, is over? There divisions with the people after losing the cause that united them and we follow Detective Essex who is a member of what is essentially the police force in the world, known as the Black Cloaks. Her and her partner Pax are on attempting to solve a mysterious case that involves of the death of a royal who was next in line to the throne. With the royals being some of the few people in the world who still have access to magic. There are mermaids and tons of difference fantasy races but the series also has a bit of a pseudo-modern or pseudo-realistic feel to the world as well. And if you like the sounds of that a longer ongoing series that has a similar vibe and has been going on and off forever that I'd recommend is Saga. If we're talking more demons and ghost stories, I haven't finished it, but I'd also recommend Nomen Omen. Where a seemingly regular girl finds out that she has ties to a more supernatural or spiritual world through her dreams.

My advice would be dive in and if you don’t like what you see…dive again somewhere else. I really took the plunge on reading West Coast Avengers #61 way back in 1990. Back then, no one had heard of the Avengers and I’m from the UK so could only really find Marvel comics. (Marvel had a UK wing whereas DC didn’t) But it didn’t matter, I was hooked and still am!! From the Avengers I grew to love Alpha Flight, the X-Men and many others!!
