Thanks for the debrief. I've been buying comics since the early 1960s, and now own a couple thousand comic books (stored in containers and packaged in bags and cardboards). I'm retired now and only purchase about a dozen or more trade paperbacks each year (from Dark House, DC, Marvel or Image comics). Hopefully the recent shift towards digital stories does not result in a decline in the value of my collection.

That’s incredible that you’ve cherished this for so long! Great to keep up with new trades throughout the year
@The_Car_Pen5 ай бұрын
If anything, your collection would increase in value. With everyone going digital, your collection is collectable. You would definitely get a lot of money if you decided to sell. Right now, comics are a bit declined because they were huge in 2019-2022. Most comics are declining value but it'll bounce back. I'd wait until Marvel or DC makes another huge movie series and people flock back to comics. You definitely have some highly sought after comics with a collection like that. But at the end of the day, comics are meant to be read. If you want to keep them or hand them down, your grandchildren would probably enjoy them

The thing i always hated about comics was how confusing it was to start a story. You always had to have read other stories before this one and manga generally doesn't have that problem but this video really helped me want to give comics an actual try.

Most comics don't have this problem. Just marvel and DC. Comics outside of the Big 2 (image,dark horse, IDW, boom boom,oni, etc) work the same way manga does.

It used to be that my main source of knowing the comics was either my marvel encyclopedia that listed thousands of characters and major storylines they were in or it was by reading the wikis. While I'd say those are still my main sources, I did finally start to collect a few comics. Right now I've got two collected editions of Moon Knight. One is the Bendis run and one is the Lemire run. I've found that these character focused collected editions are super easy ways to just get into one character and story line. One of the main reasons I've had trouble with getting into comics is because often a character's solo run also has issues that pertain to an ongoing event. So the collected editions help trim the fat and just tell a single story. I will probably continue to just look for characters and storylines I find the most interesting and buy the collected editions so I don't have to hunt for random single issues that might not always fit the story. Great video by the way. You deserve more subscribers!

Great video! And very necessary. There must be a lot of MCU/DCEU fans who were interested in the comics over the last decade or so who got put off by how messy it all it. Compared to how easy it is with manga or the Walking Dead or something. It would be great if Disney+ had some features on the comics that inspired the movies, or other explainers that could help bring in more readers. Maybe even selling a curated selecting of comics at a stand at the movie theatre when the relevant movie is showing.
@TheComicBookGamerShow Жыл бұрын
Awesome idea! That would definitely make comics for the MCU, for example, be much more approachable if Disney+ had a section pointing out relevant reads that help give more backstory. I really like what DC did at the end of the flash trailer where they told you the 3 big relevant reads to get an idea of where the story would go

I've only just started collecting Comics. Got a couple of SpiderMan from Ebay, but i'm gonna have to pop into the local Comic Shop this Weekend. Might spend twenty quid, and pick a couple of four or five others i like. Love Batman, Spawn, Venom, Deadpool ( of course! 😂) and Blade. I really want to get into the world of comics but I find it really difficult and confusing. I had a friend that was talking about the superior iron man and, by the way he was talking, it sounded awesome. It really intrigued me to read. The only problem is that you need to read X comics before that. And to understand those X comics, you need to read Y comics 😢
@TheComicBookGamerShowАй бұрын
So true!! I completely understand. For many stories I recommend just jumping into the storyline that you want to learn about and then filling in the blanks later. Technically speaking it’s very easy to follow that spiral and just never read anything because you have to read everything first. I recommend just jumping in with the basic knowledge of who iron man is and the avengers and when you come across a character or plot point you’ve never experienced before but are expected to know, watch a KZbin video explaining them. I hope that helps. The history of comics is long and honestly confusing, but don’t let that stop from you enjoying some of the best storylines you’ll ever experience! 😊

I'd recommend someone getting into comics for the first time to get just the newest issue of a book, as that will likely leave you confused since you'll likely be in the middle of the arc. Getting a trade paperback is a great way to start. This will be an entire story within one book. It'll last you a bit longer than a single issue will because it usually collects 6-12 issues. And it'll be better cost to material wise (trades are usually 12-20$ and you get 6-12 issues, where as an individual book will run you 3-5$. Talking to the workers is a great way to find a good trade for you. " Hey I like Black Panther and I'm looking for a collected story or a trade paperback to check out, any recommendations?" or "I really liked the newest Deadpool movie, I was interested in checking out a Deadpool story and only want to spend like 15-25 bucks, any recommendations?" They'll likely be able to find the great match for you interest. And if you don't like it and are willing to give it another try, tell them why. "I read The Killing Joke that someone recommended last time, but it was a little too gruesome, any lighter recommendations that are still focused on Batman?" The more information they have to go on, the better recommendations they can give.
@TheComicBookGamerShow6 ай бұрын
This is perfect. Great tips! Building a relationship with the local comic shop helps a ton since they often have years of experience to help find a good jumping on point.

I just like batman a lot and want more batman stories than the movies provide. Can batman comics be as dark as the modern films? Or are they more light hearted? What's the general target audience for comics? I guess I'm just worried the stories might be too simple for my tastes. But I guess that's me assuming kids are the target audience for comics and maybe I'm wrong about that.
@TheComicBookGamerShow4 ай бұрын
Generally target audience is 13+. If you’re expecting r rated grittiness you’re not going to find that in most books unless it’s a dc black label which generally has more of that stuff but apart from that the majority of new releases are not made for kids under 13. I’d say try out the new Absolute Batman that will be starting in October. Great jumping on point and for $5 you can try it out and see if it’s your style

I’m just getting into comic. I’ve been on and off with marvel movies, but what really set me off to get into comics is Marvel Rivals. I like how the game has so many characters that I know nothing about and want to know more. Ironically I’m trying to get into x men comics because I’m a huge fan of rogue (who is not in the game). I really liked her from the x men cartoon from the 90’s. Any recommendations for X men comics? Preferably that has rogue in it?
@TheComicBookGamerShow9 күн бұрын
Marvel Rivals is soooo good! And yes Rogue is awesome, love her and gambit. I would definitely check out the newest run of “The Uncanny X-men” this just rebooted in 2024 and should be very easy to track down either in single issues or a trade paperback of the start of the reboot will be coming out in April so you’re getting into X-men from its new jumping on point. Rogue is in the current roster of Uncanny X-men (because they cycle through various X-men members over time so the teams change up over time to tell different stories)

I'll still be picking up Saga when that comes back because I've been collecting that since issue one and while it's lost a little steam I still really enjoy it. I kinda lied though because I do still collect one comic by Daniel Warren Johnson and that's Transformers..DWJ has so much talent though and the quality is always there for only 3.99.. it's a must for me. Marvels numbers ones were at 6.99 for a first issue and then it drops to 4.99 - 5.99, that's just stupid prices in my opinion for a book I may or may not enjoy. I may checkout the new ultimate spiderman but idk yet because it's still a 5.99 issue and I think the sweet spot for me is just 3.99.
