Can I get rid of my accent?
I’m often asked, “How can I get rid of my accent?”
Here’s an interesting fact! Research shows speakers who demonstrate a “slight accent” are perceived as equally credible and trustworthy as those with a more “standard accent.”
You can have a noticeable accent and be 100% intelligible and impactful in English. It’s when pronunciation affects your ability to be understood that we run into a problem.
So why do we feel a need to get RID of our accent? Shouldn't the goal should be to work on pronunciation so that we can become a clear and compelling English speaker?

I am obsessed with languages and I really want to lose my accent, I speak 6 languages but people still recognize my native accent lol how the F is this possible? Exactly! The same goes for " Oh, you have been in [country] for so long. You still have a strong accent!?" It does get exhausting to inform people about how our brain works and that adult learners of languages do keep their native language accent. Many native English speakers also never learn a second language and consequently can't understand the challenges of speaking it clearly 😊

I've been made fun of for my accent starting from my early teenage years and that's one of the motivating factors for me to want to get rid of my accent. I worry that I will not be accepted socially due to my accent. I also worry about whether my accent will hinder my professional growth and whether or not I will be taken seriously or treated with respect. Your video helped me understand the importance of embracing my accent which is a part of my identity and where I come from. Thank you!

Keenyn, great insight as usual. I think people really want is get rid of their identity not just their accent. Everyone wants to blend in, doesn’t want to stick out . I was born in Hong Kong. Cantonese is my mother tongue. I have lived in different countries. Recently I connected with my high school friend, she told me I speak with an accent. She said I sound like someone fluid in Cantonese but couldn’t tell where I am from. That made me think accent is your own history and identity. Accent is not necessary a bad thing.

Sorry but but I still want to get rid of my accent because I was born in America I’m American I have all my American documents but I grew up in Italy. I’m so frustrated because I’m training to learn my own language, can you imagine how frustrating is? Keenyn, you are a true pro, your lessons are always clear and helpful. The phenomenon you point out here, where our ear (brain, really) becomes tuned to hear the sounds of our native language - and to FILTER OUT other sounds, which it doesn't consider meaningful - is a very important one. Helping people open their ears to hear more of what's going on in English is a fascinating and rewarding process...as you of course know first hand. It helps them get more of the meaning in the language! And letting people know it is ok to have an accent...empowers them and for many people, probably relieves a lot of unnecessary anxiety. It's great for an accent coach to do that!

Really insightful video! I'm a non-native English-speaking actor who wants to work on American projects, so it is of critical importance that I develop a general American accent, it has to be at least 90% American. It's gonna take A LOT of intensive and consant work and study, but I just gotta stick to it. Although most non-native born actors in the States keep their native accents in their everyday life, this mostly pertains to native-English speakers from other countries (think Brits and Aussies). It's far easier for them to reverse back to the "American accent" as they share the same language. Being a non-native speaker myself, it'll be more convenient for me to adopt most of it. For fun, you should do a video series in where you try to decipher the accent slips of foreign-born actors (and actresses) who play Americans in movies/shows. I recommend Big Little Lies (analyzing Nicole Kidman & Alexander Skarsgard's accents).

For me the most important thing is to be able to hear out the words what native speakers say. They can understand my foreign English accent but in case they speak their living language and I don't understand the words, the words I know when they are in written, so that is a problem I think. I can learn words and grammar also alone, but I can learn pronuntiation at the moment only with you! Thank you very much for it! ❤

Well, having an accent is quite frustrating for me although I hear lots of time that my accent is beautiful and nice (I literally LOVE the American accent and my biggest dream is to have this one). It doesn't change the fact that I'm still obsessed with this not-so-easy-to-achieve goal and sometimes I just can't stand my English although other people understand me and say my English is very good. Well, it's time to come to terms i'll never have my dream accent I guess. Quite sad, but I was trying for so many years and the effect is very slight if any. The worst is that it made me feel bad about my English and it influenced my confidence, so changing my mindset will be extremely difficult...

Hi! Your video was truly helpful! It got me thinking for a few days until I came up with what I actually wanted with my accent. Thankfully, I have been speaking English since I was a toddler and have been bilingual my entire life... but I have a pretty clear Indian accent... it's not that I hate my accent or am ashamed of it, I realized I want to have the skill of switching between accents whenever I like, depending on whom I am talking to. it's just more fun and cool to have two accents and so, I want to learn a new, more native accent of English, retaining my original English accent :) thank you for helping me come up with this result!

After watching the video, I do want to talk about how I still want to change my accent. I just don't like how I sound. I sometimes record myself or hear recordings of myself and I absolutely hate it. I sound like I am a 5th grader with braces. Sometimes I say a word and think "man I pronounced that perfectly" and then I hear it back and it's horrible, like I have phlegm in my throat all the time. And I feel like all of this affects the people I interact with, I feel like people hate being around me when I talk. So I want to change it, if anything just to solve my own insecurities.

Teacher! I have been following you for many years. I am a non-native speaker of English. My Chinese accent is part of my identity. People completely understand me. I am not a teacher or an actor. As I remember long time ago. You said, my goal is to be able to communicate as a speaker and as a silent listener. In fact , there is no time for me to think about pronunciation and grammar. Who cares your mouth, teeth and lips like this and like that. I have a good pronunciation and perfect grammar. I cannot speak English with British accent or American accent. People love talking to me. My English is wonderful as I understand the music of English, the rhythm of it and the intonation. I am born with Chinese tongue. My mother tongue is Chinese, English is my second language. I am a man with no high school education, but I have been speaking English for fifty-seven years. Simple English is good English. Accent is not important, clarity, confidence and natural English speaking is really important. They speak Chinese, I am wondering they can speak exactly the Chinese accent. So we have to accept imperfection. Right? Maybe I talk too much. It is a kind of communication. You want to be understood. Words stress and sentence stress is much more important than accent. Nice, good, clear explanation. That's what I used to tell my students who had the same questions. However, in my lifetime I have met people who came to the United States after the age of 30 who were able to acquire a native accent in 4-5 years. I have a friend who sounds like a Kentuckian, although 10 years ago she had a rather heavy eastern European accent. Another one sounds like a Nebraskan, after three years of staying in the US.

Well hello there. My situation is quite different. I was born and raised in America (Minnesota) for the first 7 years of my life. And then later I moved back to India in 2014. Ever since I’ve been in India . And coming to my accent, it’s kinda mixed. So what happened is, when I came back to India I was picked on for having an American accent. Which forced me to convert my accent to Indian. So, when I usually talk to myself and the people I’m comfortable with I usually get like 80% of my accent but not infront of others. So now I’m planning to move back to the US for my undergrad. So do you think I’ll get my American accent back again if I move back to the US?

Hi, Keenyn.. Okay, so after watching your video I’m still wanting to get rid of my accent or dialect. I was born and raised in the eastern part of England in the UK but I have America and Canada in my blood/heritage, from my mother’s side of the family. And after exploring and searching for answers and information through our family tree, it explains why I’ve always been extremely patriotic towards the U.S from a very young age. I’ve never felt any connection to or love for the UK, at all. Over the past coupla’ years, I’ve been working more towards an American English accent and trying to renounce any “connection” I have to the British language and the UK, as a whole. As far as the speaking aspect of it goes, I feel I’m getting there but I just wondered if you had any advice. So for example, if I was in high school (moving away from the British way of saying “secondary school”) and I wanted to say “I’ve got gym class, in half an hour.” I would say (pronounced) “I’ve gart gym claass (prolonging of the “a”), in “haaf” (again, prolonging of the “a”) an hour. I’ve got the American English down, it’s just wanting and needing to get rid of the British sounding dialect, though. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Swedish is my native language and while I don't want to judge people that speak English with a heavy Swedish accent, I just can't help thinking it sounds dorky. However, I only have this association for Swedish, Norwegian and Danish (which are borderline dialects). Especially for highly educated people with a great vocabulary - in my mind it just clashes! So for me at least, it's more about not sounding dorky and unprofessional to fellow swedes than to native english speakers since I don't think they have the same associations.

I work in customer service taking calls 8 hours a day. It's very upsetting when a customer as soon as I greet them say: Transfer me to an agent in the United States. Or, as soon as I greet them, they ask: Where are you from? Ufff....I put up with this all day longggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's sooooo annoying. Seriously. People are just nasty and prejudiced. They completely dislike you and feel you will not be able to assist them as an American would. It makes my job sooo difficult. I NEED desperately to get rid of my accent.

Hi Keenyn! Thank yo for your great lessons! I wish it was true that intelligibility is enough. But I am not convinced. As soon as I open my mouth (speaking no matter which of the three languages that I can speak, in addition to my mother tongue) people hear that I am Italian. And this makes me already feel bad because I know they are projecting on me any kind of stereotype.Then, sometimes people imitate (or mock) me or make fun of Italians adding gestures with the hands. They have fun and do not realise they are annoying or even hurting me. I speak anyway since I have to, but I am not comfortable and sometimes I feel resentment towards those who mocked me or made fun of Italians, even though maybe they do not intend it in a bad way. So, you see. Accent is a baggage that comes with many things. I wish it was not important, but it stil is.

Dear Keenyn, I like your video very much. I’ve been watching especially accent-related videos. I want to get rid of my accent because I want to be understood and I don’t want to hear “Oh, You have an accent”!. So this video doesn’t make me relieve frankly speaking, sorry.. The title was how to remove my accent, but there was no answer in the video. Maybe I need a private coaching.. I am trying to shadowing people’s speeches. And also most importantly, I want to understand what the native speakers say without asking them to slow down . If I know the mechanism of rhythm and intonation, I think I can understand much better. My dream is to understand the movies, comedies, documentaries without being helped. I know to understand those 100%, understanding culture is important. But the basic is to remove my accent and speak fluently. And I want you to make videos of how to efficiently express what I want to say. I realize many non-native speakers including me are trying to explain what they want to say in a long sentence, stuttering, which a native speaker catches his or her intention and corrects in a easy and short sentence right away! So, instead of making general explanation about the accent, I suggest you to make practical videos with articles or video clips and others and efficient way of speaking skill. Thank you.

Honestly this thing about the accent has made a lil insecure cause my native language is Spanish i’m 23 and i’m use to hear all the time people telling me “ oh u got an accent, where u from , i came to the United States when I was 15 and lately my english has improved a lot but I just feel my accent makes me less attractive or something , that’s why i wanna sound like a native English speaker

As a young man years ago I was always told by men and women would ask where I was from because they heard an accent. They mostly thought I was Puerto Rican. I'm American with Spaineard and Mexican Aztec heritage. At the time this bothered me but as I grew and started dating women I found that most of them loved the accent so it no longer bothered me. My question is when I speak I really don't hear the accent but my voice sounds kind of deep. When I hear my voice on a recording it sounds completely different. More like a medium pitch. Why is that? If you have the answer I would like to know. Thanks!

Hi I'm here to answer your question so you were asking that why my voice sounds different when I record my voice and listen to it, so yea listen your voice sounds different from your own voice that you hear bcz our phone/computer replicate our sound when we speak so ye that's why you sound different when you're speaking in a device if you want to hear your real voice there are some tutorials that answers how to to that. I really like accents, especially in English which is not my first language. But I must admit I know more about British accent than American. Watching movies I found, for instance, Samuel Jackson and Jessica Alba's accent interesting. I think I'd rather say 'intonation '.

Answer: you can never get rid of your accent no matter how hard you try but you can modify it if you really really work hard for it with proper guidance which cost a lot of money. Do not fall for the advertisement that promises to help you to get rid of accent. It’s IMPOSSIBLE

If someone is speaking clearly but has a little bit of an accent that's not a problem but I don't understand if people completely mispronounce words. For example just the other day I was at work in a store and some woman asked where the Bice roo is. I was trying to make sense of what she was asking me. I thought maybe she was asking for Bicycles and I let her know where the bicycles were. Some other woman with her said bat room which I was then able to piece together as bathroom. Neither of them pronounced it properly but at least the second one was intelligible. I then was able to tell them. It is pretty frustrating for me when I want to help someone like that but I just can't make out what they're saying. I know it must be frustrating for them too though. I do think in those cases accent reduction (not elimination obviously) can be beneficial.

I think we get lazy when we reach that fluency level because we can be understood so we stop making the extra effort to sound like a native. But no, I do want to sound like a native American and work on it. As you said, many actors do accomplish that and if they can so can we. Sounding like a native opens so many new doors an people take you as one of their own.

Has anyone told you have the most beautiful eyes ever. God, your eyes stand out so much, I could get lost in your eyes forever, hmm..........., I sorry I digress back to subject at hand but that is the best explanation of an accent I have ever heard. While I think it is very hard I think it is possible to get rid of native accent so that it does not bleed into your second language but that requires a lot of practice, actors do it all the time, but they have been people who are not actors who have done it.
