Religion is more about what the Pharisees were doing in Jesus' day as they were saying. It's more concerned with following the laws and being more legalistic than following God with your heart and having a personal relationship with him. As they said, God wants us to talk to him and that will open up our hearts to him.

As Jesus said, the Pharisees were white-washed sepulchres - Beautiful on the outside but full of dead men's bones on the inside. So they knew the laws and followed them to the extent that their outward actions looked holy, but they were not connected to God with their heart so they missed Jesus living among them. Hope that explains it, feel free to let me know. 👍🏼 2 Corinthians 3:3, 2 Corinthians 4:6, 2 Corinthians 1:22 and many more. Just search for New Testament scriptures with the word heart in them.
