How do I harvest honey from my Flow Hive?

There is one problems with flow frame when starting out, the product is so good that once you buy one hive you will end up with 4 or more. It does get addictive watching the bees do their thing and every hive is different.

Hi Cedar. Good to see your videos every week. My question is about flow frames leaking honey into the hive when draining honey. Is there a way of stopping this from happening. David. Brisbane Australia.

Hey David, Thanks for your message. Sometimes the Flow Frames leak a small amount of honey during harvest. We have found that this can be more likely on the first harvest of the Flow Frames and can be the result of the bees not completing the capping on the frames all the way to the base. If the bees don’t complete this capping then the lower cells are 'open' and on occasion, can be prone to leak when the pressure of honey flowing down the zig-zag vertical channel is too much for it all to get into the trough below. Usually this leakage is less than a few tablespoons per frame in which case the bees will mop it up and recycle it. The honey is not wasted although it can be frustrating not to be receiving that extra honey in your jar. Hey there, Rain affects the Flow hive as it does any kind of hive really - the bees get a bit grumpy and don't like going out as much... and the timber gets wet. We recommend treating your Flow Hive with the appropriate exterior house paint/oil/stain (depending on which model/kind of timber you have) to protect it as much as possible from the elements. - Danika
