Truly, I love your philosophical sense of reasoning things out and as a matter of fact its helps me so incredibly. You just described me in this video, just that I am also still struggling with so much and I am yet to also have a degree which I am really interested in. Great video as always, I am constantly suggesting your channel to others interested in C#/.Net development. I don't know if you've covered it yet but one thing I would like to hear about is tips on jumping from technology to technology. I just started my career as a developer a little over a year ago and I love my job. One of the hardest things for me has been jumping between tickets. I'll be busy for a few weeks messing the MS SQL Server problems, then I'll have to jump into any number of things including web forms (C# and VB), .Net MVC applications, Laravel MVC (PHP), etc. I spend a lot of time trying to learn things and follow along but by the time I get to a spot where I can apply them I've forgotten most of what I went over a month or so ago. It doesn't help that I want to use ..Net Core instead of .Net Framework.

I will add that to the list. The short answer is yes, but not in the way you think. Age provides wisdom that can be really great for a developer, whether they are just getting started at an older age or have been doing it for years.

When someone asks me what's the difference between junior, semi-senior and senior one of the points I mention is time managing. Seniors (usually) know their priorities, that important it is. I use the pomodoro technique too. A friend introduced to me a Spanish-language programmer's Twitch channel where he would program for some time, then stop and spend some time chatting about stuff. Any programmer willing to share bursts with him can clock in in the chat and start getting points for sharing time lapses. It's kind of an idle RPG. I don't use it but he tells me it's working for him. Since it's in Spanish it won't be of much help here but people interested in it will probably find similar channels during their hour works.

Time management would be 10000x easier if it wasn't for family not respecting your time. What do you advise, Tim?

It depends on who the "family" is that isn't respecting your time. If it is your parents, start by honoring their time. Put them first. Then, share about what you are trying to accomplish and ask them if they can help you make that goal. If it is your young kids, pick times when they are asleep if possible. If it is your somewhat older kids (8+ years old probably), partner with them. Reward them for helping you. If they don't interrupt you for 30 minutes (give them a visual like a specific light that is on, etc.), give them some video game time (or give them game time during your study time). If it is your teenagers, lay out boundaries. Be clear on the actions and the consequences. If they don't respect your time, they have to make it up to you in extra work (chores). If it is your partner, treat them as an equal. Lay out the vision for what this time can do for the both of you and then plan equal time for your partner to have to themselves.

Nice to know how to manage our time but, it's hard to spend a lot of time developing without a nap, can you tell us how much time spend you for diner, develop, learning something and sleep in terms of hours please?

It depends on the person. For me, I try to sleep 8 hours a night now. That is a luxury I haven’t always had. I typically go to bed at 1am and get up by 10am (that’s 9 hours but that includes my evening wind down and waking up slowly). I don’t nap (they make me miserable). I skip breakfast but have lunch at 1 or so, supper at 6, and sometimes a late night snack. I work until 5pm, do work around the house after that, spend time with my family in the evening and go back to work at 9:30 or 10pm.

Tim, could you make a vid on how you control your breaths in these videos? I noticed that i've never noticed your breathing during a video - and i'm trying to explain to this guy kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHbJc5l4htZqe6c that his breaths and cuts in the middle of them are a bit more distracting than most other youtube vids I watch. I'm also asking for my own youtube vids.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm still working on my audio setup (I have a ways to go). Scott is doing about the best he can probably with his setup. He is using a lapel mic. My guess is that the audio cleanup routine could be tweaked a bit. That takes practice and trial and error to get right. I use a shotgun mic for my live videos and a dynamic mic for my screen capture videos (I'm going to switch to all shotgun mic once I get it figured out). Audio takes a lot of work to get right and every mic and situation is different. Personally, I have a big room with wood floors so I have a lot of echo to deal with (sound reflections). The farther my mouth is from the mic, the worse it gets. Scott has a lapel mic so there is a similar issue with distance but he is in a "softer" room so it will come out as a different sound. The processing of the audio file is another big place you can have issues. Depending on how it sounds in the raw recording, there may be a lot of work to do. If there is, it is easy to get it wrong and make your sound worse (clipped, muddy, etc.) If I had to guess about Scott's sound issue (and it isn't bad), I would say he probably has the gain too high on his lapel mic, which is causing a peaking of the sound. I would guess there is something in the processing that is making too much of a change as well. As for the breathing, that is something that is REALLY hard to fix. That isn't a mic issue, mostly. It is a breath control issue. The lapel mic does make it a bit worse because it is closer, but a shotgun mic doesn't solve the issue. It is just a bit more forgiving. * Note that I am far from being an audio technician. In fact, I'm trying to hire an audio technician to come to my house and set up my studio since I am not able to get the sound I want from my equipment. I am just sharing what little I know.
