I found this in 2023, end of summer, wondering at my lack of knowledge on the blueberry bush I bought. This was a perfect video to get started. 8 minutes for a brief foundation for pruning. Kudos, good sir.

When is the best time of year/season to prune the branches.? In Australia we are in Autumn (Fall), and my husband pruned my blueberries tree/ bush just to the main trunks. And now I’m panicking, and with great anticipations, I’m waiting to see if that was a good choice.
@NicksAllotmentDiary9 ай бұрын
Hi. You normally cut back blueberries in the winter when the bush is dormant. I’d say if he’s cut the branches back to the main trunk then you’ll not get any fruit next year. New growth will appear in spring but that won’t fruit until the following summer. Sorry for the bad news. Take care. Nick
@geoffbucks58034 ай бұрын
Thanks for the Info Nick. Ive planted a blueberry bush this spring 2024 and it appears to have taken in the soil rather well - had plenty of growth and leaves, but hardly a handful of blueberries this 1st summer. I do know my soil isnt acid enough, and will correct this in the autumn and spring 2025. Ive lost the label telling me what variety it was, and was going to add another bush to help with cross polination - is this going to be a problem taking a guess at what variety next bush to buy ? should I take them out of the plot and put them in large pots also ?
@NicksAllotmentDiary2 ай бұрын
Hi Geoff. Apologies for the delay in responding. Regarding varieties I’ve grown quite a few different blueberries but never had a pollination problem. The bees seem to find them and pollinate them. I would if possible grow them in large pots as it’s easier to keep the soil acid. But one thing to note is that you’ll need to commit to keeping them well watered. Take care. Nick

Hi Marta. I keep my blueberry bushes in a fruit cage to keep off the birds. You could use netting after the fruit has formed. Take care. Nick

Is it possible to propagate blueberry plants with these cuttings? Thanks.

Yes you can try to do that. If you place them in some free draining ericaceous compost and place them somewhere shady they may root. Take care. Nick

@NicksAllotmentDiary3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert. As long as you prune it while the bush is dormant then you’ll be fine. I wouldn’t do it while the temperature is below 0 Celsius though. Wait until it warms up slightly. Take care. Nick

I've read that I should prune new blueberries bushes immediately after planting, even if they've already begun to flower. Should I follow these same pruning protocols for a young plant? (Obviously there won't be much old or dead wood yet.)
@NicksAllotmentDiary3 жыл бұрын
Hi. I wouldn’t do that with a small new blueberry bush. If you prune new wood and cut off the flowering part then you’ll get no fruit at all that year. I’d wait until the bush is a bit bigger before giving it it’s first pruning. Take care. Nick

Do you have any advice for a blueberry bush that has gone dormant? How do I get it to "leaf out" again?
@NicksAllotmentDiary2 жыл бұрын
Hi Carl. When you say has gone dormant do you mean it’s lost all it’s leaves ? A blueberry bush that loses all leaves in summer has probably dried out too much. It may recover and grow leaves next spring as long as all the stems haven’t died off. Take care. Nick
@carlnikolov2 жыл бұрын
@@NicksAllotmentDiary Thanks for your response, yes it has some new buds however most are dried up and not coming out at all, I still haven't seen one leaf come from any of the new buds however. how can you tell if the plant is in fact dead? or just.. trying to recover?
@NicksAllotmentDiary2 жыл бұрын
@@carlnikolov I’d check one of the new stems from last year ( usually red or green rather than dark and woody). Scrape a little off the surface of the stem with a knife. If just below the surface it’s green and not brittle then the plant is living. If the stems are brittle and dried out then it has probably died. If it has died check the roots to see if they have been gnawed away by a pest. Take care. Nick

Why did my blueberry bush not flower? Has two blueberry bushes in one large container. Thank You.

Sorry for the late response. They usually flower early in the season. If it was very dry at the time it might have affected flowering. Take care. Nick

hey buddy, I have a question to you. Firstly I have 3 different type blueberry bushes but a patriot type that blueberry bush I guess it looks like dry so I mean crumpled. But I asked to someone, he said me, patriot genus gives late fruit and leaf. Is it true ?
@NicksAllotmentDiary3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mert. I’ve just checked and it is an early to mid season variety so in the UK would fruit from Mid July. If no leaves and flowers are developing try scratching away some bark to see if it’s alive as it should be green or red but not dry and brown. Take care. Nick
