This is the approach that I use and it works! However it takes a lot of patience and determination and a willingness to appear to be a lunatic dancing in the street.......like twirling around and stopping, stepping back and then moving forward when your dog is back in 'heel' position. What I have realised in being consistent and determined is that my dog knows that we only move forward when he is next to me, not ahead of me. My dog is a labrador/schnauzer crossbreed rescue dog with a serious will to be the leader. I had some really difficult times when we started out together and I had some injuries because of my ignorance in how to approach training and managing a large and willful dog. I have only two legs which is no match for his four but he has adapted his pace to suit mine when we walk. After all, I have always said to myself that he can never go any faster than my pace when we're out together so it makes sense to teach him to adapt to my pace rather than having my arm pulled out of my socket and each of us suffering the walk. On a positive note I am delighted to be able to say, after two years of hard work together, that our walks are now a pleasure.

Great succinct and to the point video. Sure beats some of the other videos out there. I always feel kinda funny when I keep turning around in circles walking a dog that pulls but it gets the point across to the dog....even if neighbors and strangers give me weird looks.

I used this technique with my new Rescue BFF (Australian Cattle Dog/Lab Mix) and she got the message pretty much right away. I took her with me to Lowe's and she walked so nicely, I almost forgot she was there! THANKS! "Leave it"... and this trick... GREAT Info. I still have trouble getting her to "look at me", but she'll get that soon enough. Thanks again!

Arthur Zopellaro There Are Different levels of excitement depending on the environment. So, make sure to slowly graduate to slightly more exciting environments, so as to encourage success with his loose leash walking. Going from your front yard with little to no distractions to walking past a dog park would an example of just that. Too much excitement all at once will lead to a loss of control..which is natural. Giving him a chance to learn stimulation control gradually will lead to long term success and lots of confidence walking with you. Like he mentions in the video there are many ways to incorporate rewards into this type of training, and you should explore what those rewards might be for your dog, and incorporate them into your walks.

+EpicCookiePower try a "gentle leader" They look a little like a muzzle, but are NOT a muzzle. They really worked for my 100 lb dog who pulled like crazy. I hope this helps!
@no_peace7 жыл бұрын
We used a Gentle Leader for maybe a year or so with our dog. It helped a lot but there were serious problems with it because of her/our shortcomings. She is a lunger. Even when she is walking just fine, if she sees a deer or something that we don't see often (she's getting better with cats after a lot of practice), she'll lunge violently and, depending on the collar/harness, she may hurt herself. If she sees a dog she doesn't like, she'll lunge violently at it then crash repeatedly at the end of the leash. I really didn't want her neck to snap, so we quit using the Gentle Leader. We got a Front Range by Ruffwear and I think it's a lot safer for her. If she gets over her threshold, I can lift her off her front feet so she can't knock me over, or get closer to the dog, or thrash on the end of the leash, and there's no pressure on her neck. Because she can't react as badly, she doesn't practice freaking herself out, and partially because of this, her behavior has improved. I know these comments are old but I just wanted to mention it in case anyone reading now or later on might find it useful (I think I would have!)

I've been walking Buster some already and try to say "let's go" vs come on as I feel "come on" may be confusing with the Come command. Thoughts? Hey, Kevin. I've got an 85lb Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. He's a great dog but pulls a lot. I've been using this method and it's slowly slooowly starting to make a difference, but there are a lot of distractions where we walk and with a regular body halter, he can be hard to pull away sometimes. I noticed in another video, it looks like you have a halter for your dog with V with metal clips and a front leash ring. Any idea on where I can get/order one from?

Hey Kevin, thanks for your video. I've been trying this method for a while with my 10 months old Vizsla. She is a really good work dog, but she is easily distracted on walks by smells..obviously :) However, I feel that turning the opposite way is not really a punishment for her. She is fine with the turning and simply starts looking at and sniffing for other new things in the new direction... I keep on practicing, but I don't feel it really works...I really want to take her everywhere, but with this pulling..it's impossible. Any ideas about changing "the punishment"? What else could it be? Thanks, V.

We are fostering a 3 year old 160lb great dane female. Can I use a front clip harness? The owners that surrendered her used a leash that tightens which I really don't like. She pulls a lot and it can be hard to plant my feet and go opposite direction. Could I start with treats to get her to stop pulling and go opposite direction?
@KevinDugganctc10 жыл бұрын
You certainly can. I usually use a Freedom Harness (www.freedomnopullharness,com). Another one I use from time to time is and EasyWalk Harness. If you use one of those and focus on teaching the behavior it should work just fine. If your dog is still too strong you may want to look into a head halter like a gentle leader.

This works. I am a regular person. I don't require a "military style heel" for my dog. I do want a nice J-loop, loose leash walk however. He can sniff the ground while we stroll, meet people that want to pat him, meet nice dogs but he CAN'T PULL ME. You only have to look like a lunatic the first day or two. After that, the dog (mine at least, I can tell him "hey, you're pulling, back it up a little" (yes, a full sentence, he understands it). He backs up or goes into a heel position then we walk again. If he's really distracted, I stop walking. The second he feels the tension on his leash, he backs up on his own or heels on his own now. It's fantastic! Now, there are sometimes when he gets really distracted (birds, squirrels, leafs blowing by). I make him sit and we go through a few tricks/commands he knows for treats. It's wonderful. Walks are fun again. Have only started working on it three days ago. He's so much better. He "got it" the first day, you could see the wheels turning in his head. Before, he wasn't trying to "dominate" or lead. He just literally didn't know there was an etiquette to walks / what I wanted. Now he does and I can tell he's liking walks more too (no tension on the leash, no slip lead, funky harness, just the regular collar he's used to wearing all the time) and mom's not mad anymore, and there's the occasional cheddar cheese/hotdog treat too.

It seems that you got better results when incorporating positive reinforcement with the toy (once you determined what his strong motivator was) rather than the positive punishment. He actually seemed confused (maybe that's my own perception) when you tried the positive punishment but was absolutely clear what you wanted when using the positive reinforcement, the ball.

@KevinDugganctc6 жыл бұрын
With all of the consistency of not allowing your dog to move forward when the leash is tight, and getting lots of rewards and going in the direction he wants when the leash is loose, you see a lot less pulling and then you can actually start to cover some ground. If he makes it to a smell or whatever he was interested in without pulling, let him sniff/investigate it as a reward. It all comes together with consistency.

Give her a sharp vocal correction the instant she pulls, tell her, "let's go". Even if you have to repeat this one second later. Give a treat and a good girl the instant she walks next to you, even if that's only followed by another correction/pulling. The first day is the most frustrating / all over the place. But you will see the wheels turning in her head the instant she "gets it". She won't improve 100% when she does, but she will start understanding and if you're consistent, she'll learn to walk properly very fast

This is pretty much what I do with my dog, and we've had a ton of success. But she's a bonehead, and recently (colder weather, rain, shorter days, less exercise) she's been having a harder time not pulling. Every so often we'll have such a horrible walk that my hand is numb by the end, even though we don't go forward when she's pulling. She's really a bonehead. She is sometimes so excited that it doesn't matter if we turn around, or if we stop moving forward, because she enjoys going the other direction or stopping just as much as she enjoys going forward. (Or, it's windy, or rainy, or there's a rock in someone's yard that looks like a bad guy, and she's on high alert no matter what.) Like, everything in the environment is rewarding for her. We're both really frustrated. She's reactive (although she's improving there as well) so if anyone else is at the dog park we can't be there. They close early in winter, too. She does a lot better when she can run around (playing fetch) before walks, but it isn't always possible. Does anyone have a force-free training idea to address this? She's a good girl but she really doesn't understand what I want and she's so impulsive and energetic and anxious (seriously, you can't understand how spastic she is) that she can't keep a loose leash a lot of the time even when we have a good foundation (like with "sit" or whatever--she knows what it means but sometimes she can't or won't make herself do it...other times she clearly doesn't know what I want). I'm realizing some things now that I'm putting everything together, but I'd still really appreciate any compassionate and informed outside input. Thank you! PS I really like the delivery in this video. Everything is presented in a way that is really simple without too much going on at once, and in a really linear way that makes sense to my brain. Thank you!
@TheeHorizon6 жыл бұрын
Im sorry to hear your struggles, if it make any difference, my dog is just like yours but less intense. He's also impulsive, energetic, easily excitable, reactive(dogs, people). But with lots of impulse control training. (sit-stay, down-stay, wait before going out doors, sit and wait for me to give release cue before eating meal, go to mat) His frustration levels, and impulsive issues have gotten much better, he's thinking before reacting now. As for his dog/people reactivity we used this clickertraining.com/images/content/the-engage-disengage-game.png and he is *AMAZING* now!!! No barking and lunging out of frustration from not getting to meet other dogs/people! As for our walks, they are amazing now that we have is reactivity handled, but just like yours, we have some good and some bad due to his excitement pulling. Its frustrating for us too. *I hope this helps you and and your buddy. I also just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in your endeavors of trying to train a crazy dog lol*

When my dog pulls and I stand still and try and go the other direction, she sits/lies down for minutes on end and no matter how much I pull at her lead she stays there unless I give in to her wanting to go a certain direction. I hope you will read this and can give me some advice or anything really, I rescued a bull mix type dog from a high kill shelter very sweet boy but has alot of issues he has destroyed alot of things in our home cost us alot of money, he tries to go after our house cat, he doesn't care for the two other dogs, when on walks it is horrible I tried this method but he is so overly excited , he barks and howls and yanks and pulls and goes bazurk! Qhen he sees another dog nomatter how far the dog is it is even worse when he sees a cat, he seems obsessed with cats, if he sees a bird a squirrel or any other animal he goes crazy aswell. There's no stopping him or getting his attention with food toys or whatever. I tried a few methods and advice but it doesn't seem to qork qith him, some have suggested the prong collar which I don't really want to get because idk of it'll hurt or something. In the house he also jumps on counters including kitchen counters , destroys things , jumps on everything qhen excited mouths alot and jumps a you alot, also when I try to train him with treats he wants to take the whole hand with it! He is very rough when taking the treat, my husband is at the end with this we have gotten into huge arguments about him and he finally said it's me or the dog, idk what todo I don't want to takw him back to a shelter he was already returned once or twice by previous people and idk who I would give him too who will probably end up taking him to a shelter, I really want to keep him I see great potential in him, just don't know what todo.

@GaryNasca9 жыл бұрын
+Yesenia Ramos G. I have a pit as well. I have a few suggestions. First, how much exercise is your pit getting each day? She should be getting about 1-2 hours of exercise each day. The more exercise the more likely she will be to listen to your commands. If you don't have that much time. I recommend getting her a doggie backpack and add weight to her bag so she is expelling more energy on the walks she does get. Also, I'd suggest a harness over the spike collar. Have you trained her to sit? If so, I'd recommend that you stop walking, say "NO," make her sit, and then resume when she is calm. Its taken me a long time to teach my pit not to pull.

What do you do when the Dog doesn't care which way your going. Pulling right, left back and forward .. nonstop? I just got him and my hands are already raw from him leaping and pulling on me. Thank God my back hasn't caved in yet.

I am at State College, PA--boy, do I like your method! I tried training my dog (and having good success!) using our "old" method. Then, my class has started--"no, no. Don't do that!" and "do it this way--don't turn around when you want them to follow you--just stop". WHAT?? My puppy (she is a nine month old adopted girl) is very confused! I think I'll ditch the class and continue training the old AKC method! I love the Monk of New Skeet!!!

Pulling is a very common issue and this video address that however if the dog blows you off and controls you by refusing to follow your commands that's got to be addressed. The dog has no focus and does not pay attention to you.why would a dog not do what allows them to get rewarded and gives them a home.you are the source of their food, their walk there everything, that's a big responsibility, one the dog doesn't want to have and shouldn't. If the dog doesn’t feel like you are in charge and can protect it and keep it safe then it will fill that position of being in charge.To have to be protecting and figuring out what to do is stressful for a dog, it simply doesn’t understand what’s expected and how to respond. When it's ignoring your attempts to gain control it's because of the miscommunications that you’re having, you need to work on engagement exercises in your relationship with the dog, it’s showing how it doesn’t believe you can handle whatever may happen and it doesn’t trust you can be the leader.Training should be fun but they should be learning to follow your commands. Nothing compulsive or harsh, no special trick. Clear consistent structure, gives the dog confidence in you and Allows it to enjoy being a dog, not a behavior problem. Of course, these techniques work but nothings going to work if your dog doesn’t have a clear relationship with structure and purpose, nothing can fix Behavior issues without the human-canine relationship clearly established. The good news is you want a good relationship with the dog and have it engaged with you not just complying. when it focusses on you and responds, it's a happy dog no need to worry about everything because it's struggling with The world humans control. Fun, patient and fair Training with games, toys and numerous techniques you can learn.when you choose to make training focussed and engaging .its a pleasure to teach a dog in a relationship and not Treating it like another problem to solve instead its-an opportunity to learn. All this is easy to say and it takes patience and consistency. I had a reactive dog that bit, she bit a policeman and bit a lawyer. I had no idea what to do back then except manage it.Once I learned about getting my dog to trust and focus on me and allow me to be in charge it was A completely different bond and the kind that I hoped for and the dog desperately wants. Things changed and it made it much easier to be around people that didnt mean it was cured , I never trusted completely because she had a bite history.the outcome was still 80% better, 80% is pretty good. Today I have a much higher standard for behavior it needs to follow a command the 1st at the most 2nd time its asked 90 to 100% of the time ( 90 is realistic and 100% is a goal). Enjoy your dog As frustrating as it can be it becomes fun and gratifying when you start to see the changes.For some of us, it becomes one of the best relationships we will ever have, just ask my ex-wife.

The whole dog training community confuses the hell out of me :/ People say so many different things and I don't know who the hell to listen to...I know "try the different methods and see what works for you" but there is so much...and I can't tell who is bullshitting. I just don't want to mess my dog up by changing persona every half a month. Some say positive reinforcement is the key and others tell me to have absolute dominance over the dog and be the "alpha" and earn his respect. Some think the dog whisper is amazing and some think "he's a dumb cunt who doesn't know shit about training dogs" I don't know.. Anyway, don't know what I'll gain by righting this comment. I just hope I'm not the only one confused with this. Everyone just seem to have it all figured out ya know...

Scientific research supports force-free training. It works for all mammals. You can't train a bear by being the "alpha." You aren't the alpha with a bear, lol. (Alpha hypothesis isn't valid, though, which I think you have read about!) I'd encourage you to read analysis of scientific research on how all animals, including humans, learn. A lot of people get results by mistreating their dogs. It can work. You can create a successful kid by abusing them, too. That's the traditional model, it's what people know, they're proficient with it. It gets some results. But you don't have to do that. And in many cases it will backfire, especially with people who don't know what they're doing. And it will damage your relationship with your dog, who you promised to care for. Attempts at force-free training can fail, too. You have to understand the reward systems going on around you and your dog, or you won't get anywhere. That can be really hard. It would often be easier (and tragic) just to get a prong collar. That's why most people do it. Not because it's better for most dogs. Not because it improves your communication with your dog. I think that's why it's confusing...Both ways work to get certain things done most of the time. But one of them is harder and takes longer, and one of them causes some serious issues when it doesn't work, and often causes some serious issues when it does work, too. It's just easier and has an appealing mythology. www.amazon.com/How-Dogs-Learn-Mary-Burch/dp/1630260398 www.dogbehavior.it/index.php?journal=dogbehavior&page=browseSearch&op=sections&path%5B%5D=view§ionId=2

I recommend you to watch Cesar Milans videos and maybe to purchase hes book aswell. I learned so much only from hes series! I was a dogsitter and had problems with pulling dogs! The key is you ENERGY! Dogs are reacting so much stronger to energy than to words!

Suse I dont agree with you! Do you have any proof for this accusation?
@Tori_TLCR6 жыл бұрын
Every trainer is right about SOME things. Not everything works for every dog. Also, a lot of people don't know how to apply Cesar's techniques appropriately and both those for and against him FAIL to see that Cesar does use positive reinforcement and changes his approach depending on the dog. You need to learn about dog behaviour, body language etc. and figure out what kind of dog you have. Very few dogs are dominant "alphas" think of it like this, how many ants are there and how many of them are queens? Same with dogs. Most dogs are followers, not leaders. Most dogs benefit from a pro-positive approach. If I treated my soft-tempered, submissive but slightly (naturally more cautious/timid) dog like he was some "alpha" vying to rule my household, that'd either result in a dog that's completely shut down or super fear-aggressive. Instead, I go heavy on the positive reinforcement and give him very mild corrections (usually vocal ones, not even leash tugging etc.). The result is a very confident, happy, submissive and obedient dog that wants to please me.
