A good structured walk is the best training tool available to all dog owners. Unfortunately so many can’t take their dog on an enjoyable walk because of excessive pulling on the leash. Here are a few very basic things that any dog owner can start working on to teach their dog to walk nicely on a loose leash:
1) doorway manners
2) reward markers and release markers
3) understanding leash pressure
4) 180 Degree turn about away from dog
5) teaching left leg awareness
6 180 Degree turn about into the dog with right leg swing
Once there is a good understanding tools can be added if desired and will make the activity effortless and enjoyable

Just a heads up everyone saying that he uses "pretrained " dogs for these videos ... I have a 6 month old Catahoula who is the BIGGEST puller. After just 2 days of doing leash tension drills, and turning with him on an empty road in the middle of nowhere, he is already starting to walk at a relaxed heel for me. We're talking about less than an hour of training here and he is already getting it. Next step will be sticking him to my left leg with the third drill he gives us. So far, this has been the most helpful video I have found on KZbin when it comes to my puppy pulling. The only thing I have done differently, is brought a bunch of treats with me, and the second he does what I want him to do, he gets rewarded. With every turn, every time he's by my side and relaxed, he gets a treat. Thanks so much for this video man. It's changing my relationship with my dog.

Are you using a regular flat collar? It looks to me like this video is using a slip collar. That's definitely going to create more pressure.

Trainers always use a dog with perfect leash manners as an example. This isn't a criticism, but I wish just one trainer would take a raw dog, with no leash manners whatsoever, and show the transformation.

I certainly agree with and understand the process Larry is teaching for a "structured dog walk", but I confess, I am having problems knowing what and how to correct a puppy whose attention span is short and she can go from "model dog on a walk" to "the tasmanian devil at the end of a leash" within 1 second. That dog looks pretty far along already. It is sticking by you and paying attention. I would like to see this process with raw material - a client dog that you are just starting that already has an established pattern of pulling and paying no attention to the handler; the kind of dog that is pulling, tugging, and zig-zagging all over the place.

I think so many of you are loosing the whole point o this video. I don’t think he could show you those maneuvers on an untrained dog in such a short time. You have to be able to use your brain and work out how to use the suggestions with your own dog. This video provided a shit ton ton of instruction in a short time. To get solid instruction like this is priceless. Look past the sound quality, he is just trying to help people and not be all fancy an flashy. If anyone complaining this is a well trained dog bothers to look through his videos, you can find plenty of examples of ill mannered dogs he's working with on leashes. I believe this video was more to be able to demonstrate to the owner/handler the proper execution of the steps. You have to train the trainer first. Everyone wants an insta-answer without putting in any of the work. Larry, you have the patience of a saint even more so with people than dogs. Everyone is an armchair dog trainer, but I have yet to see others put the rubber to the road and post their own videos to share their amazing training process....for free!

Pretty much the best video I've seen on dog training. Brief, but covers all the important points. Nice. To all those commenting on wishing to see an unruly dog, the concept is exactly as he showed in the video. The dog got to that level by doing what he SHOWS in the video. And training a dog takes time. It's not an overnight or 10 minute process. I think the underlying reason for those comments is people expecting instant gratification with dog training, saying to themselves, "I've been trying it for a few days, how come it's not working?" Commit long-term and stick with the shown training methods. I figured out the turning left thing while training my dog except I swing on my right foot and bring my left leg back. My dog watches and "chases" my left leg and comes to a heel position when I turn. The stuff shown here work, period.

I miss my big boy. He was a 102 pound Boxer mix. He looked like he was mixed with Rottweiler. He was too big for me to yank or push around, plus it didn't seem very nice to me. So I taught him verbal commands for left, right, start, stop, faster, slower. He was supposed to follow by my left leg as well, which he did, but it was easier to tell him verbally what we were going to do, too. I'd sometimes let him on a longer leash and guide him with verbal cues to treats, too. It was a lot of fun for both of us. And kind of like walking a small horse. I also used "free puppy" with him to let him know when we weren't training. Then he could sniff around and be a dog. He was 5 when I got him and he had all of this and more learned in 4 months. He was a really fun dog.

Rainbow Cloud with a out of control dog to stop pulling is so easy......#1 prong collar on #2 start walking #3 let dog get out in front of you about 3 feet. #4 do a turn about 180 degrees Simultaneously with a strong leash pop. After about 2-3 times no more pulling. I Guaranteed he used this technique before turning on the camera. Nothing wrong with this technique but I agree don’t make it complicated for dog owners just because you don’t want sound like you’re using negative reinforcement.

For all the people complaining about the dog already having had training. This video isn't for amusement or to prove to you that his techniques work. If you've seen his other videos you know that they do. He isn't going to use a stubborn, ignorant dog and try to demonstrate 6 different training techniques, that would be pretty stupid. I don't know what people think.....these techniques are not something you do for 15 minutes and your done. Some things can take days, weeks, or months to achieve and you have to be consistent. Some things are taught easier than others depending on the breed and temperament.

I am against them too, but I have seen them done well considering, and when I considered that these dogs would otherwise have been put down I get why folks use them. An e-collar properly used is way better, but the best is progressive positive training, the dog and the owner then understand what is needed to be done and live happily and with other humans.

Ugh I haven’t been able to have a walk with her like you just showed us because she is either sniffing marking pooping whatever. I’m disabled and realize it’s my fault for not being consistent but I’m just now finding videos here yay! She has never bit anyone but acts like she will tear them up! I worry that she will though. So, I don’t risk it but it limits the activities that I could with her out of fear. So I’m hoping/ praying that these videos will help me help her. She is my world and has big a big part of helping me regain strength and I’ve lost 90lbs. So far, after having her given to me. I am also her 3rd. And last home! She is very smart and I needed help learning how to teach my sweet baby girl to interact with me. I give her tons of love but I see she loves it in the working mode. I’ve taught her “go around ” and her little eyes fixate on me and her head is up and back long gated prancing. OMGosh She’s beautiful Sorry bout that hehe Anyway Thank You 🙏

I gave up trying to watch this, with that bloody thundering wind over the mic, also how about demonstrating with a completely untrained, miss behaving dog. I got a 68kg Rottie that used to pull my arm out of its shoulder socket until I trained him still tries to pull away to greet other dogs at times though.

Awesome video with great tips!!! Thank you!!! I had 2 huge Rhodesian Ridgebacks that we’re such gentlemen because I did this kind of training with them everyday!! They were happy, relaxed, confident, well mannered, gentle, aware of their surroundings, and fun to be around!! And because I put in the time to do those simple exercises before play, while playing, or after play, it felt like a fun thing to do together as a team!! I could trust them in any situation and could be relaxed, happy, confident, etc...at all times!! They were such a joy to be around!! I miss those boys everyday... Can’t wait to share my life with one of those wonderful creatures once again!!!

Let me rephrase. I got my husky from a backyard breeder. Not knowing what a byb was, and what they do. I have now educated myself and now I know it was a bad choice going to a backyard breeder. When I got my dog, he was 7 weeks, and I know the breeders misstreated him because he was very timid and scared. Ive never hit or yelled at him. Its bad genetics and him being misstreated as a small pup. When my aunt came over, she was petting him, and he bit her. I didn't know he would do that. Ever since, he's been more aggresive than ever. And if I can't control him, somebody else is gonna get hurt, and my dog could be put down.

twoworkingk9s I had an aggression problem with my dog when he was a puppy. I used to get so frustrated. I watched many videos and while some advised being the alpha, those techniques only made things worth. The only thing that helped is giving it time, bonding with the dog, don't get frustrated or scream at your dog because he will act the same and get more fearful and aggressive. When he bites simply stop moving and tell the dog to stop biting. Also my dog responds very well to treats so lots of training using those. While he still have behavioral issues, aggression is not one of them anymore. He is 9 months old and couldn't imagine life without him.

And don't push your puppy into situations where he might not be comfortable especially since he is a fearful dog and could bite. Remember, his teeth are very sharp as a puppy. Teach him bite inhibition. I found useful videos by BrightDog Academy Dog Training and Zak Georges

Wow, I had never thought about teaching leash pressure before. So simple, but so effective. I had heard to turn into my dog before, but I had never tried it with my right knee out. This helped SO much! We still have a long way to go, but this was a good start today. Thanks, Larry!

Police must keep their gun hand free, and same reason hunters heel on the left, a majority of people still being right handed . I have seen a few left handed hunters who heel on the right so their shot gun isn’t hitting the dog. Akc obedience is supposed to be on the left also , unless that rule has changed

For those whining like pups that this dog is already trained, here's a newsflash: this is a demonstration of foundational principles, so he can show the results while showing the method used. If you haven't even got the fundamentals down, why would anyone need to have an untrained animal for an exhibition, when you already have one? Start at the door, then proceed. Otherwise, this is like expecting to see bloody battle at a Karate exhibition; where the experts will slow things down for demonstrating technique purposes. The real problem is people want a trained and disciplined dog without first training and disciplining themselves.

Its important when training your dog from the very beginning to bring yourself into their "bubble." Meaning remain close and lean down just enough to capture their attention and hold it as you give them commands. Rather than just repeating "sit" until the dog does it, capture the eye contact hold it and communicate. You then practice the same commands and break eye contact as they wait and anticipate your next command or reward. Over time the dog will automatically look to you for answers regarding its own behavior.
