You can literally do anything to get your dog's attention. As long as you're distracting them from behaviors you do not want them to have that's all that matters. That's why Cesar Millan is as successful as he is he does not use treats or running around and rolling around in the grass he uses touch. People say he's abusive I think even this man that does these videos may have said that in the past, but I disagree when he touches those dogs they do not Yelp in pain or make any noises like they are hurt at all. And if you watch groups of dog when they are together that's exactly how they interact and let other dogs know what they want or don't want. You don't see other dogs showing another dog what they want or don't want by running around and rolling around in the grass and making funny noises.

So you think this guy is good at his job? I am sorry to say but he clearly don't know much about dog behaviors and what leverage to use to have the dog listen. On this particular dog which is pulling a lot on the leash, first thing you have to do is to remove the harnest because this tool is making the dog wanna pull, it's like a game for the dog, to show how strong he is. That's why huskies or other breed who pull a cart in the snow have a harnest and not a regular leash. A harnest gives the dog the opportunity to use the maximum of his legs power and strenght. In a busy environment as a street with car, he should have switched to a regular leash, tight and as close to the dog's ears as possible. And when the dog is trying to pull the leash, a quick "pop" to correct the dog while saying the command you wanna use to have your dog on your side will work and make him stop pulling. I guarantee you this would work faster and better than whatever this man is saying. This guy don't know his job, his energy and his constant talking just makes him like he knows what to do... That's what we call a scammer.

@@i.3661 Maybe he is just a force free trainer. Although I agree with you: This type of treat training is just making the dog full and tired; that's why the problem behavior reduced by the end of the video. If the guy just stood there by the cars and waited out him get tired, same result. We also should not forget that the dog went on this walk as pretty tired already from playing in the yard. Not everyone can do this. The walk itself is the exercise to a lot of dogs. That is why a structured walk is the best to do: the dog heels loosely with no sniffing and no potty breaks, just walking by your side, then you switch to sniffing, peeing, pooping and playing in a safe area, long leash recommended at the initial stages. Then you go switch to a loose heel. This way the dog will respect you and the relationship is much better, clearer communication.

Antonio A. I am not a dog expert I barely know anything about them but I don’t think they are trying to get the dogs energy out! Zak wants to help the dog to survive the environment in a much more comfortable manner! And I think by the end of the video that dog seemed much more calmer not that it’s stop getting interested in the world but positively reacting to situation! Sorry if I am wrong ! Just thought to share my opinion! And if u r saying that the dog is exhausted by the end and that’s why it didn’t do anything! That’s kinda what u want. Once ur dog starts to understand (if that couple start doing it as a routine ) that the people don’t want him to get over excited when something passes by it will gradually stop! It’s natural if u play with ur dog (an example) before getting him to walk he will be exhausted and he won’t bark at those moving objects ! If this is a routine it will gradually stop 🛑

My dog used to pull the leash like crazy and I thought I would never be able to take him anywhere. Then, I started exercising him more (for example, playing fetch before taking him on a walk) and he started walking fine! No pulling whatsoever. It took time however, the more I took him out into the world, the better he was with walking on leash. He's also an extremely anxious dog, so taking him out more has made him more friendly towards other humans and dogs. Don't give up hope!

Zak George's Dog Training rEvolution Hi Zak thanks for the video. I wanted to know if you have a video about dog who is aggressive towards people/strangers. This by the way was excellent video I've dealt with these types of dogs and felt that you probably never had to struggle with it. But good to see that even with you sometimes progress can be slow but we must keep moving forward. Everyone else who is complaining Id like to see them demonstrate what you did in exactly same amount of time.

@theobserver9498 4 жыл бұрын
@Redrooster Got a few years before that would look right! If I'm spending that kind of money on the dog it should be a little faster so the dog can stretch her legs. I'd just let her go in a field but she is has an odd mutation that makes her fur like cotton candy. She was born to tangle and mat up and the poor thing is a pure bred hunting dog. (that's why I say its a mutation cause not only did my past dogs of that breed not have fur that thin but nobody would breed a hunting dog that way........ TT ) Whilst I was going slow when I crashed the intention was to go faster eventually but I'm not a good enough trainer I guess. (probably why I was watching such videos.)

This is actually working for my Golden Retriever who is 5 months. I had to go buy a special harness for him because he pulls so bad that he's on his back legs and is front ones are in the air. I simply just switched directions in an open field. Every time he tried to pull we stopped and went a different way. Before I knew it he was following behind me! We still need work but huge progress has been made. I was prepared to pay in excess of $700 for someone to come to my house and teach us. Thanks man!!!

I am working on getting my 9 month old border collie to stop lunging at cars, people, dogs, scooters, bikes, trains... anything that moves. It's hard work, but we're making some progress. Slowly. I'm working on her 'look at me' command and 'leave it', getting her impulses under check where I can. Likewise, I was thinking of paying for a trainer to come around and work with us, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel with all of this. I know the original comment here was from a year ago, any update on your retriever? Or an update on the husky? ^_^

Don't worry about using a choke collar if your dog is super unresponsive, however, paintiance, consistency, and time is the key. I've had two dogs and have trained them to heel and walk without a leash around all kinds of distractions.

Mariel, dont be a friend, be a parent. Walk with the dog at your side, he is walking with you, he shouldnt lead you. Leaders are in the front. If a dog misbehaves, let them know its not on. Dont just give subtle hints, suggestions or plead. You call the shots. Keep in mind you have an american bulldog. Do not let the dog think it has to be the one to protect the family. Thats your job. In short, while these 'nice' distracting tecniques in the vid should be employed, they should not totally replace you actually controlling the dog. The dog in the video doesnt even know its wrong to chase cars. Make him know.

Thanks so much for this video - I have been struggling with my Border Collie cross for 5 years. She does exactly this, and it resulted in me giving up on her. I discovered your videos by accident, and it has improved my relationship with her immensely. This method really works. After quite a few sessions we are still just walking up and down the street in front of my house, but at least there are moments where she focuses really well and she doesn't lunge at every single car. I have watched every single one of your leash walking videos and each one gave me some new perspective on how best to handle her. It isn't a quick fix, and it takes a lot of work and energy especially after a long day at the office. But it does work, where nothing I've tried over the years got through to her at all. So thank you for giving me the hope that one day we will be able to walk calmly down the street!

Zak George's Dog Training rEvolution Thanks! You have at least one devoted fan from South Africa! Luckily she loves fetch. :) Getting rid of her excess energy and doing leash training inside the yard is helping so much. My spaniel cross is easier to control on walks, but rushes especially towards home and she's not at all motivated by food or play when outside the yard... I still have to figure out what to do with her.

I'll echo what Yvette said as we too have a Border Collie mix. We too almost gave up on him and considered giving him back to the group because I just cannot physically handle a lunging, pulling dog. Every time I see a new leash pulling video, I watch it. We too had to train Finley fetch and he loves it now. We started with treat rewards but now he does it free of charge. ;) He's really a very intelligent dog. It just takes time and patience and fortunately we had a trainer help us with some of his larger issues. Keep the videos coming Zak!

I think the most important thing you said, and what gets lost on a lot of people, was that a walk, and training a dog to walk, are two different things. Too many people get discouraged because they go out for a 30 minute walk and all they do is struggle with the dog. They have to go into a walk with the mindset to tolerate, as you very well put it, the bad behavior until the proper walk can be taught. It takes a lot of time and patience, especially with a dog like Brutus, but it definitely works.

This was a fun video to watch, Zak you have so much energy!!! Most people don't realize that a young Golden has high energy and they need something to do. I have a very, very high energy 6-month-old Black Mouth Cur, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever mix. She does not lunge on the leash and will only pull when something smells really interesting, but she has a great recall so just calling her name, telling her to leave it and continue walking with me does the trick. I have only had her going on 2 months now before I got her she had no training. She was left to run in a backyard, never even wore a collar. She has come a long way. She has an automatic sit, a good down, can balance up on her hind legs and a wonderful stay. She is so good that if we are on a walk and I stop to talk to someone who asks questions about her because they do, she will either sit or lay down next to my foot with her paw on my foot and wait for me. I love my girl!

I have a medium to high energy dog. He is a mini blue merle goldendoodle. He is very smart, but we haven't been good with training. What little tricks we have taught him he has picked up and retained quite well. I just watched the video on teaching to Stay, and worked on that for 5 or 10 minutes and he did very well with that also! I will be using your videos until we have the schedules to get him into training classes. So far your advice has worked like a charm!

Love this! I have a 4 month old boxer puppy with very HIGH ENERGY! haha shes a handful and seriously needs to learn not to pull! She is mainly exploring the world still but also gets scared of dogs barking that she cant see or loud noises and runs and pulls in the opposite direction as soon as she gets scared! It's so hard to get her not to run and to either sit and wait and or keep walking but we are working on it! Thanks for the great videos!

Yeah, my 4-mo Rat Terrier does similar! They are learning which sounds or objects, etc are safe, or not safe, etc! A big part of socialization! Everything is new to her! Try to stay Calm! Make sure not to overload her with too many stressful events at once! Also, if u get too stressed, she will pick up on that! Change Direction, distract, come back later (or in another day) when she is calmer to what upset her! Slowly desensitize! Longer walks and play times should help, also, with her energy! Some pups need more than 20 - 30 min at the time! She will calm down as she gets older, every 2 years! You can try dog sports, such as agility or flyball, or pulling carts, also!

My friend had a dog name Penny that would chase the sheriff patrol cars. Everyone in our community knew Penny, she was such a lovely pooch, but she would only run after the sheriff patrol cars. The local officials have even given old Penny a ride home on many occasions. Maybe it was the flashing lights, but she only chased the patrol cars, funniest thing I ever saw.

I have a very high energy standard poodle, Edith. She's 1 1/4 years old, and it's almost impossible to get her to focus on me. She refuses to look me in the eye as though she knows if we make eye contact, she'll have to listen to me. I have taken you ideas and examples to heart and will be trying them with Edith. She's a super sweet, energetic pup who has a real fixation with balls, so that'll be my first step to wearing her out a little before training; however, she seems to have limitless energy. Thank you for your terrific videos. This has become my go to place for training my 3 dogs.
