As a rule, you can put oil over acrylic (or under on the gelli plate) but not acrylic over oil (or vice versa on the gelli plate). Acrylic will not stick permanently to oil paint and will flake off. You should keep this in mind. Once you have put acrylic on the gelli plate, adding oil can cause a problem in the final piece because that acrylic will end up over the oil in the final pice and cause adhesion problems.

Because gelli printing works in reverse the white acrylic in 2nd pull does sit under the oil paint paper when pulled onto paper ❤

She’s delightful. I’m very serious outwardly about my acrylic pulls, but deep in the recesses of my mind I’m skipping along like she does. Nice!

Try coating your paper with acrylic spray gesso. That will prevent the oil from leaching out of your oil colors and into your substrate paper. Remember that the oil in your oil paints is the binder for the pigment. You'll not want to lose much of that pigment binder. You could also use a paper that is suitable for either oils or acrylic and that is pre-primed. I honestly think that you'll be even more pleased with the end results and as an added plus, your finished work will be archival and more permanent. Stay Safe!

On the info sheet that comes with every gelli plate it says it can be used with watermixable oils, so I looked it up and found your video. I'm so glad you shared this with us because I probably wouldn't have dared to risk ruining my gel plate. Not to mention that I'd never even have thought of pulling oil paint with acrylic! I think this will allow me to experiment with more traditional monotype techniques where you cover a plate with ink and then remove it in areas to create your image. Very excited to experiment now that I've seen what's possible.

PS: first experiment with Griffin oil paints worked fantastic. Even thinned the paint with a little linseed oil. Picked up most of the color from the gel plate with the prints - any left overs I easily cleaned with a few drops of oil on a rag. I used linseed oil - but I'm sure any kitchen oil can be used for that purpose. Also an alkyd medium ( Liquin from Winsor Newton) mixed with any of the oil paints you have - would shorten the drying time. I have a fire going in the wood stove - and I know tomorrow morning my prints will be dry. - good luck - enjoy!

Thanks for sharing your ideas: quite clever. I'm by no means a chemistry expert, but I think keeping your oil layer thin, then using the acrylic to pull the prints should almost act as a sealant in and of itself. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.👏

I think you are right. It makes sense but isn’t something you see on gel plates. It’s always fun to find out for sure and the plate continues to be used. 😀

This is Amanda from South Africa. I also use oil paint on my geli plate - but never thought I could use acryllic paint on top..... I"ll definitely try that! The oil paint makes beautiful prints with plant material, by the why...

Love the print results with oil paint. Thanks for sharing your experiments. I have always liked the look of oil paint better than acrylic paint - and I have used Griffin Alkyd paint for my paintings. I will try them on my gel plate. They are fast drying oil paints from Winsor & Newton. greetings!

Acrylic Gesso rolled onto your paper and other printable surfaces (wood panel, canvas), will make it oil impermeable. It's been done forever. Oil is more workable than acrylic or inks without adding any drying retarder, and it only takes a few days to dry well, unless you use heavy layers of paint. Water soluble oils can be thinned and cleaned up with water.

I’m worried that palette knife will damage the plate not so much the oils?
@angiebartist
@angiebartist Жыл бұрын
I’ve used my palette knife many, many times on my gel press with no issues. As long as you don’t force it into the gel or try to move solidified paints there shouldn’t be an issue, in my experience.

What about a dryer drop into the oil paint and then braying it out onto gelli.
