Dig into the science of how modern over-the-counter pregnancy tests detect pregnancy with such a high rate of accuracy.
--
Over-the-counter pregnancy tests give potentially life-changing results with a pretty high rate of accuracy. But how do they work? Tien Nguyen explains how each test performs a scientifically rigorous, multi-stage experiment that goes from start to finish in the time that it’ll take you to watch this video.
Lesson by Tien Nguyen, animation by Andrew Foerster.

As a person who designs these tests, you explain it well for a layman. However, there are errors in your description. The secondary antibody doesn't attach a dye. Usually, the colour is produced by a colloidal gold particle (which is pink to red in colour), already attached to the second antibody. When the first zone is crossed, the urine interacts with the particle, but the particle is also moistened and begins to move WITH the urine sample and flow into the other zones where it is captured. You can confirm this by taking apart an unused pregnancy test, and a used one. You will see the "dye" (the gold particle) no longer is present in the first zone on the conjugate pad.

rickiex Urin is a great fertilizer. To add to that, Egypt as a civilization existed for an incredibly long time, the Pyramids were over 2000 years old by the time Alexander the Great invaded Egypt in 332 BC. After 2000 years of people regularly pissing on seeds in a civilization with excellent written records, this kind of stuff will get noticed.

Those tests can be insanely sensitive. I had such a low reading the doctors were astonished I knew I was pregnant 3 weeks in. My cycle was abnormal so I checked. The good news was short lived. I had lost the baby one week after finding out. It is also called a chemical pregnancy that early on (I'm fine now). Still. Dang. Red dye based pregnancy tests work best, btw.

How do pregnancy tests work when one is on the pill?
@sammorris4722
@sammorris4722 7 жыл бұрын
Mystik Basilisk I've been told the pill works by producing hormones that tricks the body into thinking it's already pregnant, thus preventing it from releasing an egg to get fertilised.
@Northflowo
@Northflowo 7 жыл бұрын
This is a good question... It is possible to get pregnant even on the pill, it is just far less likely. Hmm.

Northflower OwO Mystik Basilisk if you take antibiotics while on the pill/implant, it stops it from working. So yes, you can.

+Sara Wolverton The hormone that prevents ovulation isn't the same hormone that creates a positive pregnancy test. When a woman is pregnant, the elevated levels of estrogen in the blood prevent her from ovulation during her pregnancy. In the pill, the synthetic estrogen does the same exact thing (thus the idea of "tricking" your body into thinking it's pregnant and stopping ovulation). but the pill doesn't provide you with HcG, which is the actual hormone that makes a pregnancy test positive. HcG only comes about from the placenta after implantation. So you wouldn't produce a positive pregnancy test just from being on the pill.

A very nice and informative video. However the use of antibody-enzyme fusion proteins as described in the video is not the case with the vast majority of the home pregnancy tests. Most of the assays rely on gold- or latex nanoparticles to generate the visually detectable signals.
