I always think of the genitive case by adding "of" to most sentences with it, and putting mental emphasis on the number, not on the object the number is describing. Thinking this way is odd at first from an English-speaker's perspective, but once you get used to it, genitive singular and plural will become super natural and intuitive. Here's how I think: Я купил один телефон - I bought ONE *telephone (nominative s.)* Я купил три телефона - I bought A THREE *of telephone (genitive s.)* Я купил шесть телефонов - I bought A SIX *of telephones* (notice that *telephones* only changes to plural with the *genitive p.* case) Imagine it like playing cards; you don't say you've got "five hearts", you say you've got "a five of hearts". That's exactly how the genitive plural case would look in English. I hope that helps, and isn't even more confusing 😅

Ого, очень интересная теория на самом деле. Я думаю ты прав, для англоговорящих это выглядит именно так 🤔

I studied Russian in college and even did a summer intensive language/grammar program at МГУ. Every teacher I had told us “yeah, you are never going to get the hang of numbers, dates, or time. Just accept that.” This video was super helpful and I’m looking forward to brushing up on my Russian😊

Not sure if it's true but I heard that the reason for the genitive singular for 2-4 is a remnant of the dual number from Proto-Slavic. Modern Russian just has singular and plural but the older language also had a separate dual number with its own forms for 2 things.
@curumu_yt

Possible because Polish does similar thing with their number But why 2-4 and not just 2 (for dual), I have 0 idea
@ticallionz

@@curumu_yt yes you'd think it would just be for 2

You're right. In Serbian language, there is also a remnant of the former dual. This comes from the Proto-Slavic language. It is related to the so-called "small numbers" from 2 to 4 and numbers that combine with them.

I remember this from Russian classes in college (decades ago), but I had never seen the instrumental form of the number 2. That surprised me because it seems that it should have been taught during the three years of study, but it wasn't. So thank you for that. It is a really beautiful language, and I like reviewing it and learning new things.

You are never wasting our time, Fedor! But, please also explain that (and how) the endings for feminin (and neuter) words are different than from masculine. For genitive singular it's +а/я for masculine and neuter and +ы/и for feminin. And for plural it's +ов and for feminin I'm not even sure... maybe +ой? Thank youuuu

Originally it was the feminine that had две звезде for groups 2-4 Then Russian kept the две 2-4 but then changed the ending tзвезды два телефона Две мачке/Две кошки две камере/две камеры I love how the Slavic languages didn’t change that much. We can still read texts from 1000 years ago. That’s always that’s fascinated me

Don't know about cases and all these grammar rules, but here's some explanation: -ов - son of his father, Кузнецов - son of smith -ин - son of his mother, Малкин - son of Malka -их - worker of his master, Толстых - worker of Tolstoy

In feminine 2 means not два but две. All the other rules stay the same. I bought 2 books. - Я купил две книги. Here книги is singular genetive. A little confusing, because книги also is the plural nominative of книга. I bought books. - Я купил книги.
