While Alexander Fleming’s antibiotics and the practice of vaccinations often get the limelight, the banal everyday habit of personal hygiene is just as vital to our health, regardless if you are wrapped up warm in blankets at home or covered in less warm blankets of mud on the battlefield. Here we take a look at the essentials often preached to U.S. soldiers in the present day. While hygiene has been discussed since people cared about how they looked, the methods of staying clean and healthy have varied dramatically throughout time. Learn of modern soldiers’ responsibilities, daily routines, their focus on sanitation, all of which have been meticulously detailed to keep fighters on the field instead of under them.

Active Navy. On deployment, it is heavily frowned upon to what we call “hot rack” which is going to bed without showering first. You are expected to keep your rack clean by cleaning yourself clean before sleeping and doing laundry often. If you are found not showering enough, you can receive disciplinary action. I have heard in some cases, fellow shipmates will throw an unclean sailor in the shower and spray them with a firehose. Staying clean on a navy vessel is important. Ships are filthy, no matter how often and hard we clean our designated cleaning stations.

In basic training I was shocked at how some soldiers didn't even know the basics of hygene. I've seen 18 year olds who thought showering once every few months and not changing underwear is normal. Some families to this day have no concept of hygene, at least the army is good at breaking this pattern.

@Blue_Jackal

We clean our bodies to put stay of disease and infection. We by no means smell good however, as our clothing and other personal hygiene habits are generally not given credence to in the field. Generally speaking, we clean our feet, our groin and underarms, and we brush our teeth. Always sanitize our hands before and after eating/ defecating. This method of cleaning is referred to by Soldiers as "Rust and dust" cleaning. So to say it doesn't clean everything, just the major areas.

Baby wipes are also amazing, use a piece of cloth with water if you don't have that. Canteen showers were a thing as well. There's also a method used to conserve water so you can brush your teeth, shave etc.. You're taught all this in boot camp from day one. Sometimes an issue is how to keep your stuff "dry" because all of the sweat and such that builds up on uniforms so if you have no "real" way of cleaning them you sometimes hang it through the night, which can suck if things get cold since your uniforms get cold and frosty... Sounds crappy but there are plenty of days where I do miss it.
@silverjohn6037
@silverjohn6037 Жыл бұрын
Baby wipes are ok for wiping away a bit of sweat but aren't abrasive enough to get rid of real dirt and grime. Rubbing the skin with a dry terry cloth wash cloth will do in a pinch but soap, water and the washcloth are still the best when you can't shower. You also want to keep your fingernails trimmed and scrape any dirt under them or all the hand sanitizer in the world won't get the job done For your hair a very fine-tooth comb can do in a pinch instead of shampoo. So long as you're clearing out any grit and dandruff your hair might get a bit oily but not stinky. And foot maintenance is a whole video just by itself;).
@Firstname137
@Firstname137 Жыл бұрын
@@silverjohn6037 you're absolutely right about that. Which reminds me of when i was still fresh, I decided that it would be easier to keep my head shaved so I would be cleaner, so it was not surprise later when I had to go everywhere with a hat on because of the tan line I got from wearing my cover.

When I served in the armed forces, we had to shave daily. One day we were inspected by the officer in charge and it was really hard for me not to lough, when he asked the guy next to me "When was the last time you shaved?" - "Today in the morning." - "Well, maybee your balls but shurely not your face!" I never had any job since, where a boss would talk to his employees in this way - that's sad, I guess, as it was quite funny all the time.

Baby wipes (no scent), water, bar soap (no scent), travel toothbrush and paste, lotion and lip balm which is really good for any cracked skin on your body. Hand sanitizer and alcohol wipes are good too. You'll get some flak from the boys for whipping out the hand sanitizer but they stop laughing when they start getting sick. All these are super light except for the water but you have to carry that anyway. That should get you through any operation that's anywhere from 2 - 10 days. I've personally never been in an operation longer than nine but I still had some supplies left to go another day and a half for hygiene.

wasn't one of the reasons ( apart from tactical ) that the British 8th Army , fighting in North Africa , defeated the Afrika Corps , that of better hygiene ? .I saw somewhere that empty ammunition boxes , were used by the Brits and their allies as portable toilets , thus confining the human waste to a manageable container which could be easily disposed of - this lead to a higher percentage of combat ready servicemen , as opposed to the German attitude , which was somewhat lax in the matter

Some people don't clean themselves very often. When I go somewhere. I always take a shower before I go. When I was in the army in Iraq in 03. We didn't have access to showers at first. But had lots of baby wipes. When we made our own shower. We used the heck out of it. Feel so much better

So funny story about sanitation. Was up in some podunk town in New Jersey for merchant marine training, was getting cramps and gas every 5 seconds. One class we had was for crbd and the topic of dirty water came up, teacher was talking about how dirty water can mess you up. So I’m sitting thinking maybe that’s why I’m cramping up every 5 seconds

A very interesting and educational video. I am actually to be deployed for service in my country's army in a few days since we still have mandatory conscription for male citizens. So I have already made sure to be supplied by enough cleaning and personal care products and of course shaving is also mandatory. I'll make sure to keep everything mentioned in the video in mind. Thank you SH. However, I would like to note one thing. You mentioned Alexander the Great and the ancient Macedonian kingdom at the beginning as being different to ancient Greece. Well, that kingdom was an ancient Greek one. They spoke pretty much the same language and they worshiped the same pantheon. Aristoteles was from.ancient Macedonia and he wrote in ancient Greek. I don't intend to start an internet conflict regarding the Prespa agreement and the name of our northern neighboring state I just wanted to emphasize this regarding the ancient Macedonians.

If you have to sacrifice space in your rucksack for extra socks, do it. I always pack minimum 10 pairs of socks and 10 t-shirts. You can wear your combat pants and jacket for a month straight, but you need to change your socks and t-shirt at least once every 2-3 days.
