Thanks Michelle so much for this thorough explanation, it really helps me understand more about how sunscreens work. I have some questions to clarify: 1. For inorganic sunscreens, does that mean the larger the particles, the less it can absorb? I put on inorganic sunscreens myself and found myself with a white cast. If I leave the white cast, it means it won't absorb UV lights? 2. If I rub til I can barely see the white, does that mean it is broken down into smaller pieces and more surface area gets exposed and more UV can be absorbed? Thank you!!

And how do you know how often you should reapply in order not to waste it (I find this relevant because were I live, most worthy skincare can't be afforded by everyone, many brands that are affordable in the other countries, here are branded as "luxury brands").

Thank you for posting this explanation, it was very informative. I have one semi-related question, which is why a double cleanse is recommended when using sunscreens. It is my understanding that many modern sunscreens (aside possibly from water resistant formulas) are formulated similar to a moisturizer and moisturizer doesn't require a double cleanse. Therefore I presumed the UV filters specifically required the double cleanse. That said, sunscreen also needs to be reapplied. I presume this means they either wear off from sweat during the day or the photo unstable sunscreen molecules break down rendering them ineffective for protective purposes. If the sunscreen is simply being sweat off, or otherwise wearing away, the idea of requiring a more thorough cleanse seems unnecessary. I could however see photo unstable sunscreens molecules breaking down and becoming ineffective for sunscreen purposes, but still resulting in difficult to remove molecules left on the skin that could clog pores etc. reason

Side question: I recently read your blog article "does visible light cause skin damage". Since visible light can also damage skin and cause pigmentation issues (e.g. blue light, purple light), does it mean that LED masks are not actually good for skin (as they have been marketed), especially for people of skin of color? E.g. blue led mask helping kill acne bacteria but actually damages skin in the process, purple light, and other colors that may be doing nothing beneficial for the skin?
@LabMuffinBeautyScience4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on each individual situation - acne also causes inflammation, so the benefits can outweigh the risks!

It's probably zinc oxide itself (it has a low absorbance so a high concentration is usually used), or it might be an ingredient they put in to suspend the zinc oxide. That's particularly the case if they're using non nano zinc oxide. Titanium dioxide usually doesn't have as much of an issue because it has higher absorbance.
