Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Affairs continues with a video describing how the Russian and Ukrainian economies cope during the war. Previously we talked about the Ukrainian Euromaidan of 2014, also known as the Revolution of dignity and deduced if it was a coup or a revolution (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mamQg6uvrsp0oNk), about Russian elites and various power brokers and groups, as we tried to deduce who is going to rule Russia after Putin (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gae1qZ6Mfa5-mZY), the European Union, discussing if it is a real superpower or an utopia (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmauiXiqjZ50eMU), short-term union that is fated to dissolve, about Russia, China and Iran and discussed their ties, interests and contradictions and try to deduce if Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping and Ali Khamenei can form a stable alliance - a new axis or support each other temporarily (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYOkgpiwo51oqtk), made videos on the 15 Events that Defined the War in Ukraine (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXOQl4itg6uehNE) and on the possible vectors of the upcoming Ukrainian counter-attack (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mn3XnGN_arF4jrs) and on why we consider the war in Ukraine to be Unprovoked (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mILFgWegid1lrbc).

In this day and age, we get 24/7 montages of new weapons and tactics. This makes us forget that human beings are the ones dying, starving, suffering, and getting displaced. The true cost of war in always human. As a sidenote, Jinjer have faced this war twice, as they are from Gorlovka/Horlivka and fled their hometown in 2014. So songs such as this one "Home Back", come from a very real experience.

I think the whole idea is that neither economy does cope. Ukraine is 100% reliant on western aid, and Russia is 100% reliant on fuel sales while reducing imports for obvious reasons.
@SakiniCZ

Russia has walked into a catastrophy; it's pensions will evaporate. The west will be shook, but will not crumble like Russia will. Russian fellow travelers telling us the West will collapse are the same people who told us Europe will freeze. Rusians pensions are going to burn up.
@ChristiaanHW
@ChristiaanHW 8 ай бұрын
@@SakiniCZ yes, the West is not happy but we also know Ukraine isn't to blame for it. Russia started the war just like Europe became victim to Nazi Germany 80 years ago. so we can sympathize with the Ukrainian people. and of all the things in the West to be unhappy about only inflation is really because of the war (all the other things were already there). and that is only high because we're transitioning from Russian energy to green energy and the blockade of Ukrainian food by Russia. we could always introduce some extra windfall taxes for companies using this war to line their pockets. or redirect some of our aid for foreign countries to Ukraine (like from countries that take our money but at the same time act against us) and because of the decent welfare system in the West the most vulnerable people are taken care of.
@SakiniCZ
@SakiniCZ 8 ай бұрын
@@ChristiaanHW If it only was that simple with inflation, life would be so good. And who will do a windfall tax on the weapons manufacturers? Politicians? Those who ate being paid by those manufacturers? Secretary Austin was on the Raytheon board, and will return there after his term - nobody will do taxes on their wins. Let us talk about the situation after six months or so, or maybe after all the US bond holders begin to sell them by lot... You have a very idealistic view of the situation, good for you, I have a realistic view and it doesn´t look good.

Ukraine has an unlimited warchest cause the US can just "print" a 100 or 200 billion and it wont affect the dollar at all. Russia is in a bind since it has to sell its resources for a much cheaper price but it can still earn money to buy foreign stuff and is self sufficient when it comes to energy and food. So the war can go for a long time.

Oppression and repression are two words we often use interchangeably, assuming them to have similar meanings. However, there is a distinct difference between oppression and repression. Oppression is usually done by one group of people to another group, whereas repression can be something one does to one’s own desires and impulses. In other words, you're using the wrong word there.

I don't think this video really covered either countries' transition to war economy. A pie chart on public spending comparing current and pre war in percentages and absolute terms would be a good place to start, it can lead into what services are being cut and where most of the dollars go. A similar chart on public finances should inform on changes to tax base and new sources of finance. It is unfortunate I am no better informed after watching the video.

Ukraine has actually increased their tax income and also the number of millionaires has increased by a significant margin during the war. It's not really an indicator of economic growth but more of a "wave of patriotism" as people have actually started filing their taxes properly. Pre-war economic figures for Ukraine were always affected by a rather sizeable "shadow economy" that had persisted in the country due to corruption. This is actually good news.

"the number of millionaires had increased during the war" How? why? the increase in tax, I could understand. but how did the amount of millionaire increases if half of the country is wrecked by war and the citizens are fleeing out of the country en masse (which means the rich and middle-class ones who can afford it would do it first) ?. it doesnt make sense.

What effect would secondary sanctions have from the west on the west, on Russia and on other parties? Example they sanction countries who help Russia dodging sanctions...
@adambrande
@adambrande 8 ай бұрын
probably the same like what happened to Syria where supporters of the country get sanctioned, nations just find loopholes through those sanctions or they simply find a way to help their economy regardless. It'll have an effect of course but it depends on the west if Ukraine matters enough over other countries. You don't want them to exactly fall to or rely on China too.

Recommendaing speculative assets in the arts is higly irresponsible. Its an extremely volatile and high risk environement and should not be partnered with. I am quite surprised that your team accepted them as a sponser.

I hate to write negative comments on channel that's been making such amazing content, but why why WHY not take 5 minutes preparation before reading out the text and get the names right? I know that it's not always easy if you don't speak same language family, but I feel like too many channels just don't care about the proper name pronunciations and 'americanize' them (Ilya Matveev is definitely not from New York), and even straight up read them wrong with letters switched around (Svyrydenko became Svyderenko)... I feel like it's basic thing that should be done when making serious content. Don't need to learn language nuances or anything, just put the name into something like google translator and let it read out to you, and then just repeat it. I know it might sound crazy to many English speakers, but rarely (if any) any language other than English is read the same way English is read.

11:53 I'm confused by the definition of "harsh neoliberal labor conditions". Neoliberal reforms usually involve liberalization to boost market based competition and labor market mobility. What Russia is doing seems to be the opposite by heavily restricting market access and mobility in the occupied territory etc. Likewise, wartime economies are generally incompatible with liberalization reforms due to resources being centralized and swallowed up as a part of a national war effort.

it's probably why he bothered specifying "Labor conditions" and not an ideology practiced as a whole.

I wish you'd avoiding terms like "shock doctrine neoliberalism", even though you might be in the ball park as to what is implied to some degree, this is a needlessly political viewpoint which hardly is subscribed to from the general audience. To articulate something more factual and neutrally charged shouldn't be too difficult. The fact that someone propagates this term does not mean its legitimate.
