i'm on a Vent 24/7 since 2010. It's painless once trached and the vent machine is the size of a large laptop but as thick as a phone book. Home vents are portable

I was in a medically induced coma in august this year because I intentionally poisoned myself by eating a plant. I had a temporary pacemaker for 2 or 3 days and I was on a ventilator for a week (tube in my nostril down my throat I think, my voice is still damaged). Woke up after 5 days with the tube still in my nose, it hurt. I could hear the machine. Then I was put back to sleep and woke up again 2 days later. Such a strange experience, I feel nauseous writing about it now. I was so close to dying, yet here I am with no permanent damage. Truly grateful.

I even have asthma and I got COVID twice and I didn't need medical treatment either time (other than a steroid dose pack the 1st time, but I've had those for the flu too). My girlfriend has no underlying conditions and she only had what she described as a "cold". I know COVID can be deadly but I don't think it is for healthy people.

I had two tubes down my throat after 9 seizures ( thank goodness I wasn't aware during any of them) while in the er still not aware of what was going on ( medical professionals and fellow seizures painets, y'all know what I mean) I got one tube out and the second one stayed in for a while longer. I was in the hospital level that I can't remember the name of but I aware and I remember nurse's pulling the second one out and it was more scary than painful. So watching this video gave more understanding of what was going on. Thank you Ted-Ed!

I'm really glad this video exists. But it does bring back some bad memories from when my grandpa had to go on it. I'll never forget how painful it looked, and what they don't tell you is that while you're on a ventilator you can't cough, so every few hours the nurses would come in and insert a second smaller tube down the main breathing tube that would go further into the lungs to clean out the mucus since the body can't do it itself. Even under sedation I could see his body struggling and heart rate go up as they were doing this and it's just truly horrible to watch. Please just don't get covid, don't make your family members watch you go through that too.

I had to get intubated over half a year ago because I had kidney damage because of my lupus. My body was swelling badly and I couldn't breathe. I saw this video and wanted to learn a little more about it. I remember when I got the tube taken out I couldn't talk or eat properly(I also couldn't move or sit properly either; I was unconscious for a few days) I told myself 'never again' so I'm trying to take care of myself even more so I don't have to go thru something like that again

The one I was in, was brand new to the hospital but only certain staff could use them because the nurses hadn't gotten the training to use them yet but they seemed really easy to set up and use, even I learned how most of It worked just by looking at them settings it up. Maybe soon enough those will be the standard.

Interestingly and this is somewhat a cautionary tale. Being put on a vent can signal to your lungs to "give up" and let the vent do all the work leaving the lungs more vulnerable to the attack resulting in cases where a body capable of surviving has its legs taken out by a crutch and flatlines.

Interestingly and true story. Seen hundreds of patients sedated and ventilated. But majority (like more than 95%) were able to be discharged without any breathing problems. They can return to their normal life as before.

Shows that TedEd is addressing the lack of ventilators seriously in mids of a global pandemic thru informative videos.
