very often when we talk about our sport it's not even easy to give it a name that will help people to directly know what it is. Let's use google trend to help us answer that.

A single name might help. Most important I think is getting good streaming/TV coverage of the events. The 2022 Berlin marathon had Bart swings breaking the record and there was no international stream, I saw lots of people asking online where to watch...I think this is our biggest issue. Cheers Pascal!

If there are events (that I know of) I would expect to see a full stream of they’re the European Championships, World Games, Arena Geisingen, Madeira, P2P and Berlin. A complete disappointment last year. 😢 Maybe this can be a topic of a next video.

Hi Pascal. You need bigger money machine begind the sport/athletes. For example bicycle racing has a different name in each country but it has such a big history and such big names in the past and also big money.... It goes hand in hand. So as said before in other comments, more big sponsors equals more exposure or the other way around. Long way to go. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Belgium

Add surface or season of the year into the name. Like Ice Skating. Not sure which surface to choose for inline skating :D Summer skating and winter skating.

Great topic, really. It could make the difference. Me wrote a couple requirements for new term: 1. Short, one word would be perfect, 2. Intuitive at least for native speakers of Germanic and Romance languages (sorry, guys, if your mother tongue is other, I do adore the linguistic diversity, but it is impossible to create another word like Mom). First requirement pushed me to try some variations using German, cause they do love long compound words :) But it did not offer good perspectives. And then... Did you ever heard how the term Inline Speed Skating on Esperanto sounds? Rapidsketado. Well, sounds pretty corresponding to the requirements. But I would love to go further to make new term a little more attractive thou. Maybe it could sound like trademark (which is good in general IMHO). We could create the family of terms using prefixes like e- for electronic, m-for mobile etc. E-Rapidsketado / Rapidsketado-E for inline speed skating and G-Rapidsketado / Rapidsketado-G for ice speed skating. Like Formula-1 for ICE vehicles and Formula-E for EV racing. Or just let's drop "-do" which is quite uncomfortable for Germanic speakers. Rapidsketo - yeah, a little strange word for a while, but I think that term could have a chance, cause... Yep, your are right, it's super simple word. Actually we are near of initial point were we started the way, the only changes are: 1. speed -> rapid which is common word in most of Germanic AND Romance languages, 2. Rapidsketo sounds like kind of trademark. It's not bad thing as I said above. Or just ignore if you think those terms are stupid :)

Hi Pascal, thanks for the interesting video. I think "power sliding" would be a good name to differentiate it from normal "inline skating" and "ice speed skating". But the name has already a company, you know it well 😊. Alternatively maybe "streetskating" or a fantasy name like "superroll". But there are not only hurdles in finding a name, but also on the way to becoming a mass sport.

Great topic and with even greater insight given. I think it’s definitely useful to have an almost universal name that the general public can use to associate the sport without confusion and also to help the reach of those that market it through social media. The challenge, in my opinion, would be to agree on a term distinctive enough that separates it from recreational skating or other sports, and would also add that it doesn’t be too different or “original” to make the majority of the population that know the sport have to re-learn what to call it. I’m new to the sport and started skating again two years ago, so I’m still fresh when it comes to the perceptions I had of these terms. Firstly, I thought the term ‘inline skating’ was for the use of inlines and ‘roller skating’ when using quads. Images of skate rinks and disco music filled my head when I heard ‘roller’ back then. Regarding hashtags, even though roller skating has a better search trend, my biases led me to believe the people who were searching it expected a different content than inline skating or even inline speed skating. I then learned that in Europe ‘roller’ was (and still is) used in some marathons in europe and suddenly I began finding more marathon videos to watch. 🙌 Or to give another example, its use in the Pro *Roller* Tour website. After knowing of the sport, In this context I think of a speed skater when I see ‘roller’ used. ‘Inline speed skating’ or ‘patinaje de velocidad’-literally ‘patinaje de velocidad en línea’-wasn’t a common term to come across for me, probably because its low popularity in my country. Once I had the need to search for race tips in this platform I then found out about the sport, with your channel and two other speed skaters‘ in the top results. Now I’m noticing that the term ‘speed skating’ leans more towards ice than inline. Mostly in sports mobile apps, but I don’t think I’m wrong in saying that the publicity it gets from the Olympics helps strenghtens this association in the minds of the general public. So in the few instances where I’ve talked about the sport I’ve added ‘inline’ just to make the distinction. Today I use Inline Speed Skating because most people quickly associate it with the type of skates and because of its usage in the name ‘World Inline Cup’. In spanish I just say ‘patinaje de velocidad’ because there’s no ice speed skating here, because of the strong connection between ‘patinaje’ and ‘patines’ (skates/roller skates), and because adding ‘en linea’ makes it a mouthful! 😄

I think "Inline Speed Skating" does a disservice to our past and possibly limits the future.I think a more generic term in English is "Roller Speed Skating"

We should call whatever they call in China. It is probably something that will translate as "shoes with wheels that you can run" but we will pump those search trending numbers.

In Romania we say :"patinaj viteză role" that means " roller speed skating " but we have a unique variant of inline speed skating here kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZyQpmWYqLKsb9U . We have ice longtrack speedskating RULES( line change for example), and distances , on 250m asphalt tracks(non parabolic). We consider inline speed skating as a substitute for not having a 400m track for ice longtrack speedskating in Romania. In english i think "inline speed skating" is the best choice.

"Inline speed skating" and maybe eventually just "speed skating" with both winter and summer disciplines. If you think of it, speed skating on ice and inline really complement each other: one has the olympic credentials while the other has global potential...

I second this. Just speed skating would be the best, with a summer and winter season of course.

How they call it in China, India and Brazil? We should call it like the worlds largest event Berlin Marathon, where you won the first race, calls it. Inline Skating.
