This video is a response to the following question posed by a Malaysian youth to Dr Syed Ali Tawfik Al-Attas:
"How do we situate the position of Islam in politics today? There is so much misuse and abuse of Islam in politics today. The link is subtle, but it is clear in these past decades that the abuse of Islam has stunted our development.
Is there anything in the past that could help us better understand how to resuscitate the true and rightful place of Islam in politics today?"

Academicians avoid debating panelist whose claim to fame is solely among a viewership who arent very well versed about the topic or facts being thrown about by the panelist. Especially when the topic involves addressing scientific concepts and facts and giving religious texts and concepts as its equivalence. There are very few from the scientific or social science fields who have the wit and ability to match an opponent whose basic understanding of scientific concepts and definition is fundamentaly erroneous. Richard Dawkins and the late Christopher Hitchens are examples of the few. For those who are interested, there are plenty of videos highlighting errors in Zakir Naiks understanding of scientific concepts and facts on you tube.n

How can a corrupter, a leader, ethically is wrong but freed by law. We know, all know but does anyone do anything about it? Sad to see our beloved country being abused by a politically religion-driven agenda.

@@ahmaduthman8801 ada satu pepatah bahasa inggeris yang berbunyi " There are two kinds of people you should never trust. A religious leader who tells you how to vote and a politician who tells you how to pray." Saya harap saya tak perlu mentafsirkan pepatah diatas.

@@theallseeingeye9388 tuan nak terangkan pasal politik Islam pun refer pepatah inggeris. Pas bukannya bergerak atas Batang tubuh tapi usaha kolektif. Akhir sekali, tuan kena tengok usaha Pas melalui pendidikan, 2,529 buah Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (PASTI) dengan 150 PASTI yg baru ditambah, 170 cawangan Sekolah Rendah Integrasi Teras Islam (SRITI) termasuk 21 SRITI baharu dan 20 SRITI petang dan 6 buah Sekolah Menengah Integrasi Teras Islam (SMITI) kini bawah pengurusan Pas. Apakah usaha menubuhkan sekolah Pendidikan Islam tiada makna langsung? Saya bukanlah pentaksub Pas, cuma saga ikuti perkembangannya.

You’re making a distinction between religion and politics from the very beginning. They aren’t necessarily separate things. Politics is essentially governance. The question is, what is our worldview and approach when it comes to governance? Is it a particular religion, secularism or what? The answer to that question is: whatever the state chooses. Religions, secularism, state atheism are all examples of worldviews. The government picks one of them to guide its governance. Most governments pick secularism today, but one can also pick islam as the state worldview as well. To expand on this, secularists try to make it seem as if secularism is the default worldview and that it is neutral, while religion is supposedly biased. They say secularism is simply separating religion from politics. This is wrong however. Secularism is not neutral and it is a worldview, just like any other worldview. It replaces other worldviews and makes itself supreme over the state, and marginalises the religions. There is a lot more that can be said about this, but I’ll leave it at that for now

State and religion should be kept separate for a nation to advance. By all means, have an official religion. However, society should not be shackled by religious laws imposed as laws. Religion should be and must be a personal choice between man and God and adherence to the said law again a personal choice. Problem arises when man tries to (mis)interpret God’s laws and pass it as laws of the land.
@ish8891

That’s the most oft-repeated train of thought today, and is far from reality. Secularism isn’t just the removal of religion from state functioning, but it is the imposition of secularism as a worldview over the state, such that people are shackled by secular laws and religions suppressed. If I were to ask that secularism be a personal choice and that communities should get the option to choose, this will not be accepted by any state today. Secularism is not neutral but the imposition of a specific ideology over the state. Each state has a worldview- that is inescapable. Let’s not get confused by the mirage that makes it seem as if secularism is neutrality when it is very much an imposing force over the entirety of society. To give an example, in a secular state, a muslim community could never get the permission to govern themselves with islamic law amongst themselves. Secularism intrudes on these people’s lives and is not a choice- it is imposed. However, in islam, a religious community has the option to rule amongst themselves with their own law, something secularism would never permit. This is just a small example but the general idea I’m hoping to convey is that secularism shouldn’t be treated as if its a separator between religion and state, or that it prevents religion from influencing the state- rather, it causes the state to influence people’s religion. There will always be a state worldview, no matter how much people try to blur this reality.

I migrated to a western country 36 years ago where state and religion are kept separate. I have never felt that secularism have in any way imposed a specific ideology over the state or taken to a microscopic level, my life. Whereas, when I was living in Malaysia, I felt it every day. Even as I write, the issue with the single mother and the children’s conversion. If you look at it, the ‘ideology’ you mentioned is applicable to whatever chosen way a country decides to follow. In my adopted country, the Muslim community of which is growing, live in peace, practising their own religion in their own community without interfering with other communities and neither are they imposing each other’s belief on each other. The Christian community, likewise, although having their own political parties are treated like all other political parties. The LGBTQ community have their own say. What I am trying to articulate is religion should be a personal choice and each should have their own say on how they choose to relate to their God. It should not and must not be mandated esp so when it crosses religious boundaries. I know, this is a utopian wish for Malaysians, however given the situation in Malaysia, it is going to get worse unless the nation wakes up to herself and creates change. How many advance countries you know have religion and state meshed? I can name a multitude of developing or worse, failed countries, that have religion and state bedded together.

What is controlled is the imposition of religion in state matters and public life. Secularism isn't just about freedom of religion, which we do have to a certain degree here, but also freedom from religion. You can be all religious if you want, just keep it personal, to you, to your family members if they wish to join you or your friends or members of the community.

I don't think Malaya was colonised by the English/British. I believe the English was expatriate workers. I have Land Titles issued by Sultan of Kedah in 1932 as the Ruler of Kedah. I saw Land Titles issued by Sultan Abdul Samad to Yap Ah Loy. Sultan Abdul Samad was the Sultan of Selangor, the Ruler of Selangor. UMNO was a creature created in order to create a 'Hero'. Why was this 'Hero' created in an 'Istana' ? Those Rulers didn't want to be blamed, they didn't want what happened to the Rulers in Indonesia to happen to them. 'Political Islam' dies when the grandson of the Prophet saw was murdered. Some people believe Uthmaniyah Turkey was the last 'political Islam' but I beg to differ. 'Political Islam' is a republic.
