Ravens in Central Park are known to mimic popular ring tones just to troll people walking through. I once read an anecdote from someone running the Iditarod where they'd stopped for a break and found themselves unable to look away from something strange they'd spotted. It was so weird, in fact, that they just stood there staring at it so long that another sledder stopped to check on them, and found themselves mesmerized as well, before the first one asked the second one, "You're seeing this, too, right? I'm not hallucinating?" And the second sledder confirmed that they were watching a giant bull moose running onto the surface of a frozen lake, falling down onto his hindquarters to slide across it, and then getting up and doing it again.

My dad did his Masters in Yellowstone over 30 years ago. He could have told you that otters love play even back then lol. He was doing research in the river, in a full wetsuit and flippers. A group of otters lived in the area, and over time they got used to him. Dad used to say they thought he was one of them, just all big and weird looking. They'd come and swim around him, chasing each other and trying to get his attention. He said they'd also do the belly sliding thing in other seasons too, sliding into the river from steep embankments in groups. It always sounded so magical as a kid, a whole family of otter playing with you while you worked. Of course, it probably screwed with his work, but he always enjoyed interacting with them.

I kept hamsters a few years ago. They are not super bright but the whole running on a wheel thing is a form of play. I can't remember the study, but a group left hamster wheels in a forest and observed wild mice, toads, snails and other animals chose to use the exercise wheel. These animals were not told to use the wheel and could leave whenever, but chose to run on it. That seems like an example of animal fun to me

A friend of mine once told me about how their friend's hamster kept getting out at night, and they couldn't for the life of them figure out how. The animal was kept in a cage high up on a counter, with a mesh top that was too high for them* to reach. One night she stayed up to see how the hamster was doing it. It turned out they had been shoving a bunch of shavings under their wheel to keep it steady; they then steadied themself on top of the wheel, pushed the mesh top off with their nose, and dropped 6ft down to explore the house at their leisure. I feel like, when we measure an animal's level of contentment merely by whether they're fed and watered, we forget that most species require some sort of intellectual stimulation as well. *I'm using they due to the fact that I can't remember the animal's sex

Having a home aquarium and testing out different filters and pumps, I got to witness how even guppies and gold fish would play in the currents for fun. With rock layouts I created a swim lane for them, and rocks to keep the rest of the tank calm and slow moving water if they wanted. The fish would use the track as fun to swim with each other, some would try to outswim the current as a game and go back to the beginning and do it all over again, but not always the super fast sprint, just more like a tread mill and group walking event. Fish taught me not only do they like to have just a slight amount of entertainment (faster currents) but they have personalities (basic ones) where there is a pecking order, and trusted friends to hang out with in cliques.

A theory of mine about how wolves started to fetch stuff because of the crows, is when crows do this with vultures too, essentialy picking up an unwanted bone from the carcass, tossing it somewhere else to distract the wolf or the vulture from getting into the juicy bits of their carcass. It has been recorded plenty of times and the wolves and vultures seems to be happy with it and stop bothering the crows on the carcass itself for as long as the interest in the bone is kept (or the marrow is consumed).

The thing about wolves fetching as cubs surprised me. Not because I thought it was impossible or anything, but I’d always assumed that it was easily taught to dogs because of their natural tendencies to kill, retrieve and bring the food back to their den/puppies. So, I thought that was probably why it was easy to get dogs to play fetch…it was already part of their biology, if you will. It never ceases to amaze me how much I’m still learning everyday. I’m 49 yrs old and I love that you always talk about something new to me. On another note; kind of… the cubs playing fetch without being prompted or trained to do so reminds me of orca calves. They learn so much by watching the members of their pod and other orcas…things you wouldn’t expect an animal like that to know about or even care about. But they also play and fetch..unfortunately for any nearby seals or sea lions they are usually the object of the calf’s playtime and it doesn’t end well for them. But still, they’re so cute when they play…. I’ve even seen them play tag with other calves. That I saw in the wild, not at an aquarium or whale sanctuary. Thanks for another informative and fun animal adventure! Have a wonderful holiday season with your friends and family! ❄️ ⛄️ 🎄 🕎 🕯️🌨️ 🍽️ 🍖 🥮 🥣 🥧 🥂 🙏🏻 💕

Aww elephant zoomies!! 💜 The fact I always said if I see a wolf in my yard I'm just going to throw a ball at it and see if it will play and spare my life is amazing. Now knowing they may actually play fetch. 💜

Good stuff! You should do one on how certain fruit trees in Africa drop fermented friuit that animals will gather to eat and get drunk. Elephants staggering drunk next to drunk wildebeasts and gazelles, and other animals that come to the trees to eat the fermented fruit to cut loose. It's a hoot to watch.

You know, it's a very common thing especially in my country and let me tell you don't have beef with those Mf cuz they can hunt a b$%@ ,while being drunk like my uncle in a traditional healer african ceremonies.

Living beings 🤝 having fun It’s very funny how we all basically do similar activities just with different means. Like, children play tag, slide down things and splash in water and run after things. But as you said sometimes there’s no need to study smth, just sit back and enjoy the cute moments!

I loved Sim Ant so much as a kid. It took me way too long to realize the ant game was a sponsored ad and not just gushing about ants and ant games being cool. 😂 Great job on that! Came here from the Capybara vid and I'm hooked. I love your delivery!

The fact that that croc ran over like a dog in response to his name being called 🥺 This video is so wholesome… until I’m reminded of how evil dolphins are.

Baby elephants who play a lot growing up to be better adjusted to their environment makes a lot of sense to me. For human children, playing outside and tactile play with many different kinds of objects are critical for the development of motor skills as well as visual-spatial perception. This is why small kids raised on iPads or kids whose parents never allow them to go out tend to have stunted growth in these areas.
