Q&A with the coach: how do you aim your punches? Footwork, footwork, footwork! And what does that have to do with Carthage vs Rome in the battle of Cannae or Shaka Zulu’s conquest of the southern extremity of The African continent? Almost everything.

That's really cool that your "mma" guys beat their "boxing" guys. You've said in you're videos many times, you teach your students not just some martial arts moves, but "how to win fights." Even though they faced boxers, they still understood the "whats" and "hows" of the matches they had. Congrats to them. I'm a fan of combat sports in general, but I did assume a bias that most mma fighters would loose against boxers in a straight boxing setting. Now, either that isn't true, or that's the stereotype and your gym is the exception to the norm. (I might have worded that wierd. But hopefully you understand what I meant). I do train as well, though my training has hit a speed bump as I finally just started working again after the shutdowns back in march. So I'm trying to get my groove back.

I am the coach of jess who asked the question, how do you aim your punches. I teach my students to aim by giving them this thought. If your shooting a tank at an object the first thing it has to do is line up on the object correctly. Then it has to get its distance correct. If either one is off target the tank will miss. If you have two tanks shooting at each other then the one that lines up and gets distance first will win the battle. You also have to know where to hit your opponent and how to hit them correctly and also how to block, evade, counter, and footwork. I would like to show you what I've taught Jess. How to line up, get your proper distance whether your opponent attacks you or you attack your opponent. Please give me the opportunity to share what I have discover during my martial arts journey.

I have always failed to explain why footwork made my punches more effective. Angling off your opponent by moving into position with your feet, to get the right alignment/angle for your punches makes all the difference in generating power upon landing the punch. Think of the edge alignment required in sword cutting. You use your feet to align your punches. Making sure they hit at an angle to penetrate the guard or come around it.

Awesome Q&A coach! I was wondering if you could give some tips on how to aim a take down in MMA. I've found it tricky to shoot effective take downs if I shoot like a normally do in wrestling or bjj, instead I have to aim for the feet. Is that correct? Any ideas? Thanks coach!

But before I get around to making that video, three things to consider: 1. setting up your doubles and singles from an over/under clinch, and/or a reverse collar tie 2. setting up your shots off your hand fighting while striking. 3. Setting up your shots off the cage.

Love the discussion of Cannae. I cannot overstate how impressive it was for Hannibal to lead a numerically inferior army in enveloping a significantly larger foe. Hannibal actually placed his weakest and least disciplined infantry in the center (The opposite of the conventions of warfare at the time) to ensure the flanks held or gained ground with the more seasoned troops. But Hannibal personally lead the center and conducted the battle from there in order to boost the moral of these less experienced troops and show that he was not abandoning them. Again this was very atypical as usually a commander would position himself with his strongest forces or strongest reserves, like Alexander with his Companion Cavalry or Napoleon with the Old Guard.
@Cavouku
@Cavouku 3 жыл бұрын
The History Marche has a great series about Hannibal's battles leading up to and including Cannae. He was a master of deception in a lot of ways, including the fact that, not only did he outflank the Romans, but they never saw it coming, because he managed to *hide* his flanks in the open field using the dust his front lines deliberately kicked up in the dry plains of the battlefield. In fact, the reason Hannibal had his best troops at the wings was so that they weren't pushed back enough to expose his hidden flanks - you can see the genius at work in the video "Battle of Cannae, 216 BC (Chapter 3) ⚔️ The Carnage ⚔️ Hannibal (Part 13) - Second Punic War".

I think part of the reason why Hannibal achieved encirclement against a numerically superior foe at Cannae (and why this feat has so rarely been repeated) was because Rome brought more troops than they could effectively command. A general of the time would be used to commanding one or two legions at a time. So with _eight_ extra-strength legions at Cannae, maybe "go forward and attack" was the most complicated order they could reasonably give. Even if a Roman officer had noticed hours ahead of time that the line was being stretched and that an encirclement would eventually happen, what could he have really done about it?
@TheNadohs
@TheNadohs 3 жыл бұрын
@@OptimalOwl this is an interesting point that I think has merit. Both Roman Consuls were on the feild, Varro and Paullus. Typically they would both command a more manageable 4 legions each. However because the Armies was joined together into one great host, Roman law dictated that they must alternate command between them each new day. This messy command structure and the logistics designed for a force half the size would explain the uncharacteristically poor and simplistic Roman strategy.

I practice HEMA and I think this video hit the nail on the head. There is a concept in HEMA of being weak when your opponent is strong and strong when your opponent is weak. Pushing against your opponent with all of your might like we see in Hollywood is a very quick way to get "flanked". I am also a military history enthusiast so I loved how you incorporated that into martial arts.

It's really lulzy how dirt-simple were some of the "innovations" that allowed some historical leaders to achieve dominance. Shaka Zulu copied rudimentary formations, gave his troops shorter spears, and clarified that they were supposed to actually _kill_ the enemy and not just dance and shout and throw rocks. Oda Nobunaga had _one_ ally who didn't immediately stab him in the back when he went for the capital. That's the big thing that allowed him to end a century and a half of civil war.

@Aumima Mimadino Nobunaga was an early adopter of the tanegashima teppou matchlock arquebus. That ended up being to his advantage, for sure. Still, for taking Kyoto, the Matsudaira alliance was absolutely crucial. They kept his neighbours from invading his home province while he was out campaigning, which was what had thwarted every previous attempt. Guns, on their own, might not ever have given any one party enough of an advantage to break out of that vicious cycle. But having one reliable ally absolutely did.

On that note about the Zulu, Shaka and his army are partially the reason why the country of Lesotho is high up in the mountains. The first king of Lesotho, Kgosi Moshoeshoe(note that I say of Lesotho and not the sotho people) realized the threat of the Zulu coming from the east and the invasion of the Boers from the southwest and had the Sotho people move up into the mountains. The Zulu sorta just gave up after a while due to the difficult terrain and interference from the British.

i too use the old strategies to actually sparr. marathas werr highly skilled but simple or no strategy warriors. the aim was simple to go in the middle and slash them out. it didnt work because mughals knew that marathas were highly skilled but few in numbers so the mughals kept acting like they are retreating and then moving forward again which baited marathas in their archers range. kind of teaches how to bait an aggressive fighter with punches and then ending it with roundhouses once he is frustated and tired.

Is that bad for the knees and the joints? -Vegativa (Capoeira Takedown that's universal and also used in Wing Chun/JKD and other styles) In The Cage? Could it work?

Now you've said you should also use the falling step for a straigth power punch. Now I've tried it and it works, but should i try to do a combination of a falling step and pushing myself forward or only the falling step? 2. I've also recently watched your video on junk training. There you talked about proper visualisation while shadow boxing. Now I have genetic mutation called "aphantasia". I cant visualize at all, I only see black. Still while shadowboxing i try to imagine what my opponents might throw ( e.g jab jab straight left hook/ 1 1 2 3 ) and I try to react to it like i would in sparring. Is this still proper visualisation or should i keep my shadowboxing at a low training volume and try to only spar more? Greetings from Germany.

1. There are many ways to throw a straight. The method you should use varies depending on your position relative to your opponent. 2. Most people don’t actually see anything when visualizing or imagining a situation. That would be hallucination. Visualization is abstract thinking: preparing for a possible future event through the context of previous experience.

Given what I've read about other regions of the continent , it surprises me that Shaka Zulu's army was the 1st in southern Africa . Was Southern Africa separated from East and West Africa by something?

Ramsey do you think is better to punch through the target or make it like a whip and retract on the point of impact for example clipping the chin and retracting, or following through and take is head off?
@7dollarproductions
@7dollarproductions 3 жыл бұрын
Follow through man. Thats where you get the power. You don't break boards by punching the surface, you break them by punching through them. Don't strike their chin with just the very end of your kinetic chain, punch through their head and drive the force past the surface of the target, just like punching through boards.

i find interesting this topic, because many people dont even bother asking how do we aim, we just do it, but there are people who struggle with spacial cognition. it would be interesting to know that "aiming method" the sensei of the dude who asked came up with, to teach people who have trouble coordinating

I am the coach of Jess that asked Ramsy Dewy the question "how do you aim your punches?" The way I teach aiming punches is showing them how to line up on their opponent and controlling the distance. If you would like to do a free class with me, maybe on ZOOM. I don't know how much you know about boxing but every little bit will make the progress faster and smoother. I think you'll be surprised and happy if you give my boxing a try.
