Thank you for having me on your channel again! So glad we got to talk about this stuff

the no-buy cycling is probably real, but i am a very low-buy lolita in general. i feel like more seasoned lolitas (like 40 pieces or about 5 years) have an easier time talking ourselves out of routine purchases, but it makes larger purchases of long-time wishlist items or indie brand releases even more compelling. indie brands are a lot more difficult to get secondhand, so the FOMO is more pressing then.

Thank you for starting the right conversations within the community I can always count on you to shed light on the important ones. Thank you for taking time out of your day to create change within the community. It is heartwarming to see this kind of discussion being held; especially being a newer lolita wanting to build my wardrobe.

Thank you for talking about this! I think the wider lolita community definitely needs to talk about it more. I'm lucky that my comm is very open about this kind of thing though so it's nice to be able to all support each other. Sometimes we will even do no/low buy challenges together, but I do agree that the knee jerk reaction kind of no/low buy after spending a ton of money never ends well. I always describe it as crash dieting for your finances. Also as a fellow gothic/classic I understand Prince's pain lol. Sweet always has so much circulating but we are hoarders so it's like a desert out here. You really never know if you'll see that item again and it's rough.

Wow that sounds like you have a lovely comm! I really love that you do no & low buys together, that sounds like a great way to encourage better habits together. Thank you for watching!

Thanks for making this video, we definitely *should* be talking about budgeting in an expensive hobby.

Impulse spending can be such a huge problem, especially because so many lolitas feel the pressure of missing out on a rare piece or a "good bargain". When I impulse bought around the time I started getting in to the fashion, I ended up with a wardrobe that wasnt cohesive and didnt work together. Being more strategic about what I buy and when has turned my closet into one that works together. And, when a piece I really know I love comes up, I'm usually more able to spring for it because I havent already spent that money impulsively.

Love how you’re showcasing these hard adult conversations… I agree that the Lolita community as a whole doesn’t have a great relationship with budgeting. There are people in my community who consistently talk about using pay in 4 or how their wallets are hurting posting their new purchases and sometimes I get jealous of them and wish that I bought things, too; while I could afford it comfortably, my budget and other priorities keep me in check. I do try to normalize talking about money in the comm by honestly saying that I don’t purchase something because “it wasn’t in the budget”. I love how you do no-buys or low-buys. It’s a much more proactive approach to save up the money before the purchase instead of dealing with consequences after a purchase. I do also really appreciate your take on using the time of a no-buy or low-buy to reflect on your wishlists and goals and do other mental prep-work. Thank you for your thoughtful videos! ❤

This was a great conversation! I'm definitely trying to cut down on impulse spending this year, it's definitely been a problem in the past. I'm unable to wear lolita for the time being due to an injury and it's given me time to take stock of my wardrobe and see what areas are lacking and what areas are a bit bloated. It's encouraged me to sell items I rarely wear and that in and of itself has given me valuable perspective on the types of items I should avoid purchasing in the future. I'm hoping to do something similar once per year going forward.

A yearly purge or clean up is a great idea! I try and do that too, outside of my "event dresses", it's always good to clear a couple things out that haven't been worn in over a year. Thanks for watching!

Excellent video to listen to, I decided to create a wishlist/wardrobe builder spreadsheet while listening so I can pinpoint what I want for my outfits and use this as a guide for my purchases in the future

For the past year, I've done well at not impulse buying... dresses. And I stress it is just dresses. My maladjusted spending habits have shifted to something arguably more expensive and it does worry me for the long run, especially when stacked on top of chemo. I continue to check Closet Child every few weeks to few days, and I feel massive anxiety that I may get more clothing but at the same time could miss out on something very cute or unique that I was NOT pining after for years. Haven't been on Lace Market in what feels like a couple years, but I distinctly remember how common it was to read that someone never wore a piece or maybe wore it once before selling it. It really undermines the ideal of sustainability that the community often professes.

This was such a nice conversation to listen to! I personally don’t mind being upfront with whether I’ve bought items myself or received them in exchange for content/review. I think it’s important to be honest about how much lolita costs, especially since I mostly deal with tiktok and the audience skews young. My goal this year is definitely to only buy what’s on my 2024 WTB-Wishlist and keep up with my budget journal. I struggle with fomo and have almost hit purchase on releases that I could afford, but didn’t need. It’s definitely hard resisting the temptation to spend when you’re in a good financial place ;;

Being transparent about gifted or sponsored clothes is really important, I'm glad you touched on that! It's great you're always able to be upfront about it. I totally understand what you mean by temptation by good finances xD Lately I've found what helps is that if I don't spend my "savings to spend" or fun money in a month, I move some of it into my actual savings or emergency fund. That way its less "in reach".

Lolita + Bipolar Effective Disorder= Obliterated bank account. I allocate wearing and looking at Lolita clothing for 3 months a year (Winter, I live in a hot ass country) to control my spending habits spanning over the entire year. Out of sight, out of mind. 😅 I still enjoy lolita online content all year round, but no closet child, wunderwelt and mericari for me!
