If you have access to hot water out at the shed (you could even bring a kettle out), soak the body filler containers in the hot water long enough to warm it up to make it easier to work with on those cold days.

I was curious about this. I do this for spray cab paints. I was wondering if warm body filler sets up faster, so you get better workability, but short working time?

​@@davidbrennan7422 it doesn't really harden that much faster based on temperature.. from my experience the amount of activator used really defines how fast it dries. For small spots i usually use a bit more activator as i know it's done quickly and i don't really need a long cure time. Can't really give you a recipe here for how much activator to use, i go by experience as i stick with the same brand.

For body filler and sanding, get yourself a headlamp and mount some lights on the walls shining in from the sides. The lighting helps you see and fix issues more quickly. If you dont do things like this you will spend a ton of time discovering things you missed on earlier steps. For body work, don't worry about finishing a part each visit. The thing about body filler and sanding is that cure time is that it's better to get the first bit on all the panels so you can let it all cure properly before you sand. I just want more car content from you. I don't rightly care if its on your main channel or a second one. I also really enjoy watching you learn whether it's in the video or the comments after. The only reason I want this project to finish more quickly is because I can wait for you to enjoy the fruits of your labor. You got this, even if it doesn't always feel like it.

Just started watching the channel with my husband. My dad used to restore and resell classic cars he worked on years back. Skylarks, woody wagons, chevys, carmingias..mostly from the 1950's and 60's. He had a couple of garages on a piece of property and spend most of the day working on a car, come home to eat dinner than go back out in the evening for a few more hours. He had help. A few friends who were me mechanics. It's was definitely a full-time job/investment. And he would definitely say stick with the original engines and restore them properly. My husband isn't that much into cars, but being a daughter of a grease monkey, I would check out your separate channel. 👍

How will you have time for a car channel if you don’t have time for the rebuild? Then again, maybe it will make you find the time? When I raced stock cars I spent all winter building/fixing because I had the deadline of opening day in the spring. So that forced me to put time in everyday. Even if that was just cleaning the workshop for 1hr. So I believe what you really need is a realistic deadline. Then it will force you to get it done. Maybe the new channel will help create that deadline.

Sanding Bondo is a lot like sanding wood. You need to look at it from different angles and once you get a feel for it it becomes clear. Nice thing with bondo is after your done sanding you can hit it with cheap rattle can primer or paint. Let dry and it will give you instant feed back how good your sand job was. Kinda like a mini guide coat. I would sub if you did an automotive channel.

when you knock off the majority with 36-80 grit, take a cheap black spray paint and dust the area good - then sand with more higher grits, this will be a guide coat- low spots will still be black. Also use a glazing or spot filler after your lightweight filler for more coverage. They lay out smoother and nicer, they will also fill pin holes. I like to use USC Icing Finishing Putty 26006

For sanding "too much" or "not enough:" a good rule of thumb is to check the data sheet for whatever primer you're going to use. It'll indicate what grit the surface should be sanded to before application. Once it's smooth and consistent at that grit, you should be good to go. Similar to applying finishes to wood or other materials: it needs to be smooth enough for aesthetics, but not so smooth that the primer can't get a mechanical lock.

12:03 I considered an EV swap on the $500 Mustang. It's $20K for an okay conversion. Then I needed a car to drive and just put the Mustang on the road as-is with minimal parts thrown at it. It's a year later and I'm still throwing parts at it, but it gets me places. A family member had an EV for a bit, so I have experience with them and know what the real upsides and downsides are. An old VW is worth keeping as-is way more than the Mustang I have. Also, no for a second car channel. There are more than enough car channels, and I don't even watch the ones I actually like. Just do your thing here man. I just remembered this project and came back to check up on it. I think it shows what you previously explained that not every project and build has to be a short, one video "easy" thing. Some projects are more complicated and take more work, and that's not a bad thing. It give the channel more depth.

Bob, that’s great! I use body filler professionally, as in we use it at my place of… profession! Sometimes we go months without using it, and other times we use it for weeks on end. Ive always admired how you’re able to research, dissect, and disseminate new-to-you topics/skills. If that’s what your car channel will be, I think it’ll work! For instance, I didn’t know about the effect of mixing it like a maniac and introducing air bubbles. No one ever told me that before, and I hadn’t researched it. 🤷‍♂️ Cutting the spreader was a great move. Don’t get too held back by fearing perfection, you’ll definitely notice things when you put the next coat of primer. It becomes easier to see when it returns to a uniform color, it’s part of the process.

I like the format of you working on your car while answering viewer questions. Maybe you could make this a series on this main channel. That would help with scheduling time to work on your car too. You talk about last five video viewer numbers affecting sponsors. What if you categorize your videos and show numbers for last 5 for each category? Then you sell sponsorship for specific video categories and also allowing you to do some of these videos that you want without affecting your sponsorships.

Not sure if you know about this product, but Plastic Honey is a thinner for body filler. It is useful to be able to change the consistency.. It can also be useful to have a larger spreader to bigger areas. I like heavy plastic or metal signs , covered with some clear packing tape. You can give it a slight bend or use it straight to shape the filler as you apply it. I find it's better to give one swipe with this screed and then walk away; ultimately this results in less sanding.

For a second coat, they make a filler that thinner and easier to apply. Look for a glazing or finishing filler. They also make a product that is a “guide coat” you dust on in a contrasting color can help you see how your sanding is going. You will see any deep scratches left to remove, or larger valley’s that need filling. I think sanding primer is about the same as any wood project, sand until the previous grit scratches are gone, and then move up a grit until it’s smooth. Your sanding technique looks pretty good. Using larger blocks and working in a cross hatch pattern it good.

You can use metal spatulas and not the plastic ones. To check if you have a nice even surface use your hand and feel it. Spray the howl car with spray filler when you are finsihed with the handfilling. After that spray a fog with a black Spraycan over the car, it should look like fine black dust. This give you optical information when you grind it with wet sandpaper.

Making some good progress. Couple recommendations I learned a couple years back with body filler. When you apply the body filler if you sand it once it starts to harden (30-45mins) it sands much easier. Also once you get to smaller areas - Consider a light weight body filler. You are using Evercoat, they make one called Metal Glaze. Much easier to refine with less aggressive cutting. I would watch an automotive based channel of yours.

Yes for either a car channel or at least a playlist of all the car stuff. I see you crossing the streams with sanding... A good idea is to sand only in one direction per grit, then switching to sand across the previous pattern, this makes it easier to tell when you've sanded out the previous grit's scratches. Maybe take the body filler can home with you so it'll be warm when you go out to the car. This is no different than finishing a 3d printed helmet for cosplay, something you've done before - You got this!

I have a popup camper that needs some roof work. I've had it for 3 years now and have worked on it about twice a year for maybe 3 hours. I feel the pain with life getting in the way. My biggest problem is space. If I had a large garage/barn like you I might can get it done in about 2 long weekends. Karmann Ghia’s are one of the few cars where it’s kinda hard to pick the wrong colour… not everyone will like the colour you pick, but it’s hard to pick one that will be universally loathed. I don’t like White or Red for most cars, but I do for KG’s. If it was mine… it’d be Black with Shadow Crome for all the bright work, but that’s just a look I love.

Regarding the color of the Ghia, it being really similar to a Porsche in shape, primary colors do look really good on it, in my opinion but I think a dark maroon would also look really nice.

Not sure what kind of fuse box situation you have on the older landcruiser, but you should open it up (if it's an actual box) to check for water damage or foreign substances. If it's just a strip of fuses mounted, you might consider upgrading to a newer fuse style. I've had electrical issues on a couple of cars -both Toyotas, and both were fuse box problems.

Yes, you don’t have the skills others do for body work, but you are a problem solver! I was expecting to see you heat that bondo up, mix it with a drill then vacuum all the air out like epoxy! infrared heat lamps are your best friend for body filler. I use floodlight fittings with the bathroom type heat lamp bulbs.

I’d prefer you keep one channel. I love everything about your channel especially that there is a variety of content.
