To be fair with these indexes, both bonds and equities tanked in 2022, so at least the policy would have stayed at 0%. However, I love how you've laid this out and sifted through the smoke and mirrors. The S&P500 soared through the low interest rate environment. I personally trust it going forward (although maybe not quite as aggressive as the last 10 years), but how would you go about explaining your outlook on S&P500 allocations in these products?

Right, I don’t think it’s fair to insinuate that the insurance companies tried some bait and switch strategy. Just these indexes came out at the same time interest rates started rising.

Each company offers many fancy VC index options. Best to stick with who has good fixed rates ,SP500 caps, transparent renewal rates track record and multiple SP500 options as that your only fall back options. If VC index works well in future can switch to them but in current scenario all VCs are underperforming SP500 caps. I personally compared more than 30 indexes and none came out winner in 2023 when SP500 beat the cap on all products.

The BNP Paribas Global H factor is currently positive right now year over year and if you add in the participation rates Nationwide has then you are getting more than the 3 or 4% it’s up.

The reason you can do a look back is because while the index it self was not live the constituents that make up the index were in existence and that’s how you can get a pretty good idea of how it would have performed based on the rules of the low volatility index. You will see over time these indexes will perform over time, the thing is most of the volatility indexes came out in 2020/2021 and ran into what happened in 2022 when bonds along with equities tanked.
