Update - This is A method for folding these filters, which are simply sheets of paper. If you do not have a Chemex carafe with the large spout or just don't like the uneven nature of the funnel when you can place it in the carafe then this is a good method for you that still brews a nice cup and takes advantage of the Chemex quality paper as a filter.
How do you fold those square paper Chemex coffee filters for pour over?? After looking at tons of diagrams and other peoples’ take on how to do it, to include some styles that end up looking like a kite, I decided to post my own short showing how to do it if you want it to look like the fancy picture on the box. this actually undermines the proper way to use the chemex. Proper way is simple 1. Pull out of box in its square shape 2. pull one corner away from the other three 3. insert into chemex. 4. Get to brewing.

Not saying I disagree with you that chemex folds the filters the way you shown here. I know they do. I’ve tried it both ways and get a great cup of coffee both ways so I’m unsure if it undermines the filter. I’ve heard some people say to put the 3 folds side towards the spout to balance the flow; etc. Idk, I don’t have a traditional chemex style carafe and use a Fellows version. Let’s call mine the “Balanced fold method for people with OCD” 🤣😂

Awesome, This seems like it makes a little more sense with evenness of filtration vs how the instructions tell you to do it where you have 3 layers on one side and 1 layer on the other! That doesn't seem very scientific!

Actually the fold in the picture on the Chemex box is the regular, 3 layers on the spout side, way of doing it.

Nice alternate fold, but I don't see how it could change the brew. In the usual method, you have 50% of the surface area of the filter with 3 layers of paper, and the other 50% with 1 layer. In your method, it's the same proportion: 50% 3-layer, and 50% 1-layer.

It creates a more even exposure to the linen filter. Both sides have. Equal folds and are mirrored to each other. You can also use this fold if you don’t have a chemex carafe with the big spout. There’s also just buying cone shaped linen filters too lol.

You’re welcome. To be fair a lot of people just put them in the carafe with 1 layer of paper on one side and 3 layers on the other and make sure to put the thick side towards the spout. If you don’t own a Chemex carafe with the big spout (I don’t) it feels weird so I fold mine like this for a more even funnel.

Just open it. Put three folds towards the spout so it doesn’t fold over on its & the one fold pointing towards the back :) Look up how to use Chemex filters on here and the other videos show the correct way to do it.

Hi, yes. Most of the non-chemex carafes do not have that distinct spout and don't need to have the thick side facing any spout. Others have stated that even when facing the thick side to the spout you can end up with a folded in filter and get Turkish coffee (their joke not mine). Other coffee focused KZbin channels have stated this is a flaw in the use of a paper filter. My fold fixes this and makes both sides even. It is only 2 folds so I don't know that I would call it complicated though.

Thank you! This extra folding evens out the brewing. Think about...using the mfrs. way by going through 3 layers of filter on half the filter and one layer on the other half makes 0 sense to me. The extra folds balances out the brewing process.🤓

I think with the manufacturer’s method, the coffee only drips through the point at the bottom tip. So it’s also a single layer pass-through, even though one side of the funnel is three-ply. I prefer that to having to make these folds.
