"over the support leg" - love this insight thanks Asha!
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes off skates, these kind of small adjustments are more easily seen. "Belly over thigh" is something I say a lot to help get people's body's balanced over their support leg. The body will always choose to be anywhere between both skates as logically 50/50 is way more "balanced". But that's not how to skate with both skates on the ground, so we have to override the body's natural tendency to want to be in between both skates. Hope this translates to feeling something different on your skates.

Excellent point! Just got new drill to practice! One thing I'd try to add is the lower you stay, the longer push you can make without shifting your center of mass projection off the skate.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed that's right. The length of your push sideways is DIRECTLY related to the amount of knee bend on the other leg. However, many skaters over push to the side without the additional knee bend. That's what I wanted to bring to people's attention as it's such a common problem.

Great advice the push distance and 3, 2, 1, 0 push piece. I have been trying to do it in a single push from the start and that break down really explained what i can do to structure my stride dev. And I'm a guy, learning to skate and guess what, I'm doing exactly what you said about trying to push further and pulling my body over with the leg... this isn't online training, it's psychic training!!! Thanks soo much!!!

Hahahah that's funny. Some women also have this over pushing problem but it's way more common in men. I've had 20 years to observe thousands of students closely and it's given me some interesting insights. I'm glad this one helped you. I call it "the man effect" and it happens in lots of skills. One of my favourite lines is "Doing the right thing too much often then makes it wrong, skating is subtle." Enjoy your shorter stronger pushes!

I like how you explain things and how you set focus on balance and your position especially the knees in your video. Great stuff... although you should mention that a long stride just won't work if you have both feet on the ground, which is by the way a great exercise. The longer and harder you push the faster you go. As easy as this. Important though is that you "land" on your supportive leg in the right balanced position. At the beginning to learn skating you will get in a neutral position and push from there. And then it is completely true you can't push as far because you get out of balance. To learn to get fast you have to learn to balance on one foot basically at all times. The time both skates touch the surface at the same time is very limited. Basically you start to push and shortly before you end the push you plant your new leg. That's also a reason why good skaters normally land on the outside edge... Imagine: If your body follows a straight line, you push to the right. The left leg would hit the ground on the right side of the line to stay in balance. Now you are only balancing on your left leg which will cross the imaginary line to the left and push far to the left. At nearly the end of the push the right leg will land to the left of the line and continue to move over to the right side again and so on. A great exercise to feel the position where the skate should land is following. Go on grass at the beginning. Get your feet little over shoulder wide apart. Get your weight over one leg as she demonstrates in this video. Stay in this posture and try to lift the long leg (which would have made the push) done correctly you can balance on the supportive leg... Have a nice day... To my person... I am a former ice hockey player..
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that's a great explanation of what we call "Stride 3" skating. There are 3 strides, beginner, intermediate and advanced and the casing the imaginary line in the glide is the final more advanced kind of stride. Striding in general causes a lot of confusion with skaters of all levels. This video was aimed at a stride 2 audience or those overfishing as beginners and intermediates which is a very common problem. Good analysis.

Hi Asha, I love your videos! I have started rollerblading after more than 10 years. I saw your beginner video and in that you said to keep your back straight but here I see you are bending your back. I am confused should i keep my back straight or bend it?
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Back is never "bent", it's always straight (you don't hunch). In advanced stages when you want a more aerodynamic position you lean forwards but keeping your back straight and knees bent, it's what competitors do in racing. Beginners shouldn't lean forwards, they tend to straighten their knees and if they bend their backs that adds lots of pressure to the back muscles and also the extra weight (head and upper body are indeed heavy) makes that position an invitation to fall forwards. The problem with beginners and stances is that they want to replicate what highly advanced skaters do, but they don't have the core strength, the balance, the cadence, etc. The stride is actually something that changes over time.
