I think that's really the best way. Don't tell people, show them. Seeing how much it has helped your life does more than words could ever do.

🎉👏✝️🙌 YAY!!! Celebrate with me. I'm still downsizing ... BUT... 1st major Victory Result, from months of almost daily, massive purging. My hubby was at our new house and didn't know where anything was....as I organize the whole house.... He immediately found our swimsuits ☺️ in 4 different areas!!!! NO stress! (Kids rooms, ours) THAT is because of Minimalism 👏🎉💕🥳 Sorry for emojis, but I'm so excited! I'm still purging the old estate.....at least a month to go.....attic, closets, old toddler toys, lots to go. But I praise God 🙌✝️, this hard work WILL PAY OFF

My wife and I started our journey to minimalism last year, 1.23.2017. Since then my in-laws have taken notice and have started minimalizing themselves. Also, nothing feels better then them asking us to help clear old stuff out.

Minimalism was healthy for me mentally. I learned a boatload about myself as I started purging. I've been through two whole-house purges and I'm still not quite there. It's a freeing, liberating, and awakening process. If it's not for you, I get it. It took a while for me to get it.

Thank you for pointing out that minimalism isn’t deprivation. Yes, I COULD be fine with four black shirts, but if I happen to find happiness and use in a couple blue shirts, it’s OKAY to have those too. It’s OKAY to have some hobby stuff if it enables you to do something you enjoy, even if it’s not “necessary.” It’s that point that I think many other “minimalists” forget.

Definitely lead by example! We figured this out the hard way. It's difficult to not try and sell the idea of minimalism when it has so many benefits but it does seem to encourage people to become defensive.

Hi. After months of being on the road to minimalism I have only come across one downside. How do you deal with regular society? It can be as if you’re from another planet, especially when out shopping or listening to friends talk about stuff. I don’t use the M word as much as I did at the beginning, even though I’d love to spread the word.

Consider shopping for a donation - maybe a book for a little free library by an author you like, or gifts for a needy family (mittens for the community Xmas tree?).

How do you balance minimalism with environmentalism? I am pushing towards zero-waste and whilst in many ways this is supported through minimalism - reducing the amount of resources I own and use, I find it difficult now to throw away things wastefully on the basis of the cost to the Earth to replace them.
@ianosborne2500
@ianosborne2500 6 жыл бұрын
carysinwonderland1 Maybe try reframing and realize that the cost to the earth has already been paid when the object was created, and since you won't be replacing the item there shouldn't be additional costs. If the item still has some useful value then consider selling or donating it.

Ooh we have a question! I know you've covered gift giving before but do you have any tips how to stop family sending us cards? It costs at least £5 for card and postage to us overseas and we're trying to run a sustainable household and business with as low waste as possible. We obviously recycle the cards but it goes against our values and the money would really add up if it was to put towards something else (a meal out for example). Any tips would be much appreciated :) PS. Your podcasts give us life

@4stringboy

The22726 Yeah i get that. We still send them cards because we know they like to receive them, even though we’d choose not to send them otherwise. So I guess I sort of thought that it could work both ways. Obviously we do appreciate the sentiment :) but their kind words over a text or email would mean just as much to us, without including the physical item. Thanks for your advice 😊

All modern mininalists seem to focus on the decorating aspect. It has to be all white and cubic and with non colors as only accents. Brown, black, grey. But you must realise that getting rid of all your old stuff and buying all new minimalistic stuff is not very minimalistic in its outlook.

Hi Joshua, i wonder to know what kind of thinking helps you to deal with negative coments about the way you choose to live, specially when you can't move away from that ones or well at least not right now? In my case family tents to do comets like are you going crazy? Do you feel rich? "you are taking off all the pretty tings to save only ugly ones", and I start to feel grumpy, writing that makes me laugh because I notice that is only them opinion, and I know that, but that doesn't stops me to think they aren't adding value to my life, I don't wanna have to explain myself so usually they don't get it. I repeat to myself that I have to understand that they are surrounding by the same lifestyle I try to move on, but might be I could copping it better. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Once your child has accumulated too many unnecessary toys, how do you convince her to let some go?
@kiyajtg
@kiyajtg 6 жыл бұрын
Lemon I personally don’t have kids, but I know people who do. What they do to declutter is just go through the toys little by little when their kids aren’t home to see if they find any that haven’t been played with. Depending on the age it can be hard or almost impossible to persuade kids to get rid of things. That’s why it is almost always better to declutter without the child. If for some reason she notices a special toy that she loves is gone, you can run to the grocery and get it, no biggie. Hope this helps!
