Always start a flight with an empty bladder. But for those longer legs, these portable toilets are a life saver! :-)

Lol! Wish I’d seen this before my first 4 hour solo flight. Got stuck above the clouds. Used my Gats fuel sample jar to relieve some pressure and was barely able to make it to a VFR airport. I now keep a few of these in the plane.

The “poor mans” version of the TravelJohn is a standard aircraft sick bag with a couple of handfuls of kitty litter. Easy to carry dry, has a large open top (to reduce aiming issues, even for females), the bag is inherently waterproof by design, and once used the kitty litter absorbs even the fullest bladder. Once used it can go in any bin that used kitty litter would go in, and rather than being a difficult to source item, you should already have sick bags in the aircraft and the kitty litter is available in most supermarkets. If you want the “posh” version, carry a clothes peg/pin to ensure the top stays sealed, both before and after use.

I remember back in the early 90s when I was a line service guy. Ferry pilots would always ask for Aeroshell bottles before they departed for those 22 hour flights to Hawaii.

I carried a Welch’s White Grape Juice bottle, the old glass type, for many years. The top always sealed well, the “fluid” kind of looks like white grape juice, etc. It served me well on 4+ hour flights.

On long cross country flights in gliders ( sometimes up to 9 to 10 hours) I used plastic bags with a diaper or cat litter in it) Modern gliders are sometimes equipped with an on-board system with a tube and a rubber funnel. This works for men but is harder to use for women.

The real question is what do you do if you have to go number two? This is where you dont want to eat anything risky before a flight.

Looks like I might have to make a follow-up video about this. The short answer is, unfortunately, there's not much to do about #2. If it absolutely can't wait you've got to divert to a nearby airport for a pit stop. Some pilots take medication/supplements to reduce the need to go, although that's not great for the body. I've heard of people wearing diapers just in case there's an emergency (not a great option, but better than nothing).

Luckily at my age and just flying an archer my bladder fills up about the same time my tanks empty. 👍👍 . However one year flying back from Vail in the company King Air I had food poisoning and set on the John the whole way back ( I was SIC) . I envy pilots who can pee in the plane while flying however

I keep anti diarrhea tablets in my flight bag ever since a long multi day ferry flight in an R22 helicopter. Thankfully the legs were ridiculously short due to the tiny fuel tank. However, each fuel stop was a little longer than usual. I’m switching back to fixed wing next year and I’m expecting long single pilot legs (GA ferry flying). I’m guessing an adult diaper in the bottom of my flight bag might be advisable. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is why most single piston GA aircraft have a 3-4 hr range - sized to match the pilot's bladder. This is also where an unpressurized high wing is fantastic. After using the travel John, open the window and bombs aweigh.

The vast majority of King Airs don't have relief tubes. It's optional equipment, but since it's such a pain to clean and maintain hardly anyone wants or uses them. Some early models of the PC-12 have them, but they rarely get used. These gel bags are nice because you can just throw them away after you land. No cleaning required. Cheers! 😁

This guy I used to know was a pilot for our company. We did a lot of C182 flying. Anyway he was telling the boss and I about his bathroom emergency on his latest flight. He claims... that he had to crawl into the back seat and poop in the supplies box. And used the chamois to wipe.. all we had for auto pilot on the C182rg was heading hold. He said he gained 500 feet climbing over the seat. Anyway we kinda believe his as the plane kinda stunk a bit and the box and chamois was gone the next day.
