Im a university student and even though i can pay all my bills myself with my part time job, i cannot afford fancy dinners and such (i live in Switzerland, where a meal quickly gets 30 bucks). My ex bf was in the same situation as me, so when we went out, we would always split the bill (at that time i was still in high school, but could still manage splitting the bill). Now, I've been with my current bf for 2 years. He is from a rather rich family and even though he is not a spoiled brat, he is used to a certain life style. When i say, hey i cannot afford to go out for dinner once a week, just once a month, he offers to pay, because it doesn't hurt him and he want to go. I would never pressure him to do that. When i am done with university, i surely have a nice job and then, i want to give it back to him. Because honestly, i am really grateful for his gestures. I mean, i could easily live without them. But in daily life, i always have to think about money and whether i can afford something (because as i said, i pay for everything myself) and i get anxious because i cannot safe as much as i wish i could. My problem was I was always so poor I couldn't reciprocate. AT ALL. Later I tried to do only free dates. BIG mistake because I was actually encouraging those horrible Netflix dates. UGH. I know better now. I do struggle with the issue constantly. What has helped a lot is I decided to practice dating with female friends. I picked a friend and took her out for Christmas which was a big deal for me. But she was way more poor then I was at the time. Then we tried to go dutch but she was always so broke.
