Jonathon Sullivan MD, PhD, SSC talks about the persistent silliness coming from healthcare professionals about strength training and exercise, and the need for you to be armed with your own information. When you go to the doctor, remember who's working for whom!

One of the best pieces of wisdom I ever heard was “Never take advice from someone who has never succeeded at the goal you are trying to achieve.” All you’ll get is a list of their fears.

Before I started weight training I had painful lower back issues from sitting all day at my job, also my shoulder blades would burn. My son pleaded with me to join the gym and start working out. Over time and learning about weight training these pains have disappeared. I have always wanted to stay away from painkillers and pharmaceuticals, knowing that's what a doctor would have for me. So to me I have experienced firsthand the benefits of weight training. And the fear of being in pain again motivates me to keep doing it..

I appreciate your up front and data based approach. I have weight trained for 10 years now and I don't plan to stop. At 75 I still enjoy my profession while participating in a number of exercise activities on a regular bases. I thank God for a pain- free and strong body, mind, and spirit. Thank you for the vital information and brilliant examples of real people doing important life- giving LIVING!

Thank you and rip for all you're doing. You helped me a lot with my back pain, due to working three decades as a scaffolder. Nothing seems to help, until i run into starting strength and your chanel on KZbin. When i was at school, i was a thrower in track and field, so i kinda remembered the exercises, and put myself into a novice progression. Now, four years later, i am still lifting and completely pain free, and the best thing is, i changed my job and teach this to others now. If you ever come to Vienna, Austria, beer is on me....

I wonder if any of these so called medical providers have ever felt the absolute physical joy and mental peace after an intense weight training session. I wonder.

Ive observed in recent years, people seem to hold a doctors " opinion" to a God like level, instead of realizing his or her words are just that...an opinion. Not to say their opinions dont hold strong value. But, a doctor still is just a human like me,with all the inadequacy. I sure wouldnt ask my obese Dr. about weight loss or strength training or even simple nutrition. Seems logical to seek out the winners who live it and display it in their own life. Thanks Sully, for doin just that. Ive learned the hard way that strength training works better than opioids or alcohol in the relief of back pain. Add in a hour steady state cardio and lose the statins and B.P. meds to boot!!

Hi Sully, new subscriber here. Just want to say thank you for being the voice of sanity in a health/fitness world gone mad. I held two junior Powerlifting (Squat/Deadlift) records at 18 (1978) and lifted until my early 30s when I succumbed to the 'Cardio' propaganda of the time. Have now been back lifting since I turned 50 (I'm 62) and have never felt better. Keep at it.

Thank you for your wonderful insights! A doctor that I greatly respect recently gave me her opinion that I should stop heavy lifting. We had to agree to disagree on that point. My heavy training continues...

Awesome stuff as usual Dr. Sullivan. Especially like the picture of Dr. Rip. I am lucky that my doctor is fully on board with what I am doing. At age 54 my numbers are all good, and I am on no meds. All my doctor says is keep doing what you are doing, because it is obviously working

Doctors are clueless. I’ve fixed rotator cuff injuries, knee injuries, back injuries and every other thing with heavy weight training. It’s actually the exact opposite of what a doctor would recommend

Hmm, I d rather have a heart attack and drop dead during heavy deadlift rather than give up lifting and wind up frail, weak and in a nursing home.!!!! I guess having older people being strong and healthy is NOT profitable for the pharmaceutical companies and nursing home owners. If my doctor told me not to lift heavy I would not go back to him.

To be clear, I do not think doctors are being venal or maleficent when they give this advice. It's important to understand that doctors in 2020 do not necessarily make more when patients come in more (see: Capitation). I think this bad advice comes from misinformation and conventional wisdom. Doctors actually think they are helping.

Wow, ya great points! I see my Dr. 4/22, I'm 56, who worked out 40years...took gear for 2,3 years, 5 years ago, and know, I'm sooo lethargic, no nothing! I've only met him twice. I asked him on the first visit if we can discuss TRT, and he looked negative and mumbled something. ugh... Can I ask for a copy of my blood work? They took like 12 vials, and mumbled something about my kidneys looking good when I seen him the second time. I have hyper tension, and had heart failure 2x, but doing way better, because I started strict on my bp meds. So, really want to know if medical provider is obligated to give me a copy of my blood work? And also, I was going to bring up HCG, is that a good idea?? ...please help mee💪💥❤️

Hello again. Do you think this is a generational thing with doctors. As I am now 2 months short of 70, and as my current doctors retire, I see more doctors that are athletic. I choose them based on intelligence and their own lifestyle. Remember when doctors were taught about “athlete’s heart?”

But wait, aren’t we also the old f**kers? Much as I’d like to claim middle age I don’t think I can. I do fight to avoid old fogeyism and to have an open mind, but doesn’t everyone say that?
