I show you how to pre mix your Gia Notes surfacer and lacquer paint
I am sorry I said the surfacer makes 150 ml I meant to say 200 ml ,but I only have 120 ml bottles so I just add extra thinner as I use the surfacer ! link for 8oz bottles below since they do not make a 200ml bottle use the 8 oz and measure out 200 ml of liquid then mark the bottle before pre mixing surfacer !

awesome info. and video just subbed. if i ever start a hobbyist channel i'll make a video referring people to this video as you juyst about covered everything really clearly and in a great educational manner. i hope you don't mind i did see a couple things of note. gaianotes specifically states on their homepage in a big disclaimer to never put a steel bearing and shake their paints up and down. they use very thin glass and this will crack them. i've had 2 of them have the bottom completely separate in a clean break and dump the contents all over my work space when using both the little saturn shaped metal things spraygunner sells and the standard 8mm steel bearings ak and others sell. i emailed them and they are obviously very aware of this as they told me in a sort of scolding manner that i should have read their disclaimer lol and are not interested in changing bottles. small glass marbles are a better choice for sure with gaia bottles but they say not to use them even. i'd say use glass beads and mix gently, using swirling vs rattling motions. this paint is too nice to throw away for sure. it simply wont shake well at un thinned viscosity so i just focus on getting the leftover pigments out during the thinner washes of the bottle while topping up the large bottle like you did and really never had anything that would not come out from this. if you mix up your paint like this video shows you really only gotta worry about it once so its not too hard to not practice maracas with this one brand but these are richly pigmented and many of their ultra finely ground pigments do tend to stay in the sharp bottom corner in a dense cake so anyone who gets these definitely needs to mix it really well. i think it is a very good practice to premix if you only intend to airbrush the paint as you are able to get a perfect ratio of pigment to resin to thinner and every time you grab that paint you will know exactly what to expect. run off a few spoons and runner waste to see how each color lays down at specific pressures, tag the bottle with best range and make fast work when actually painting. if anyone is nervous of premixing solvent paints you should be. but only enamels or if, heaven forbid, you use homedepot lacquer thinner instead of a japanese brand. enamel thinners will evaporate from the seal and you will pollute your space and end up with thick paint needing more thinner that is gonna outgas like the stuff it is replacing. enamels just are best mixed per job or stored in glass with a double or compression seal like alclad does with their candies. if you are a viewer and wondering these caps rarely if ever leak when used properly and they do a fantastic job of keeping lacquer solvents and alcohols in. i was nervous of this but a year later, more than 200 lacquers premixed, 51 of them gaia hehe and maybe 3 faulty caps (these bottles cost like 52 cents in bulk there's gonna be occasional duds) and i won't ever go back to mixing up lacquer paint each time i use it. just grab, shake the plastic bottle like crazy or use a orbital mixer and dispense paint throughg a mesh filter into the cup and toss the filter into a old 50 ml gaianotes surfacer bottle of 30:70 ratio of acetone:isoproanol to soak till next i clean the paint from the brush and clean the filter fully. no more daily personal pipette landfill, no dust getting into the bottle each of the 50 or so times i may use that color over its life. hobby mio sells a better cap but a worse bottle lol. bottles too stiff to squeeze and cap is amazing anti drip design.it will fit SOME other brand bottles but ive had them split where the round threaded wall meets the bevel that leads to the nozzle on others so if using hobby mio caps on other brand bottles do not overtighten. the seals really dont need much pressure tbh so just snug them. and you are correct in searching for "pet tattoo mixing bottle" to get the crystal clear hard polyethylene ones like this. omitting "tattoo" will flood the results with soft cloudy ones best for travel shampoo not hot thinned paint. even the best paper towels will make a huge flurry of static charged airborne fibers and i'm not a fan. blue shop towel can be better but nothing beats " lint free nail wipes" that look like 2" squares w rounded corners and little perforations. these rule and are worth it at about 5 cents per wipe in bulk from asia or even 10 cents in a smaller package from amazon. i tend to use less $$$$ in these than paper towel as they are so good at small wipes and dry sort of locking the paint and they dont become a soggy ball of fibers i reuse them when wiping out my paintcup in the initial stages, and they are actually soft enough they dont scratch well cured glossy paint if you need to do any post painting cleaning with soap and water and many paper towels will look like you used 800 grit if you try this i also mix my paint and thinner up front and relabel my bottles and gaia are so nice they rarely mess up especially fresh bottles. modo never mess up alclad always leave adhesive on bottle and a totally clean useless shiny foil label in your hand and jumpwind are an exercise in zen haha. i do the blade trick the same too when the label delaminates mr hobby are awful labels even brand new you gotta do this the entire peel every 1/4" and it still may tear. jumpwind if it got even slightly damp the paper becomes pulp and refuses to be nice losing all integrity. i had ok luck putting a piece of clear packing tape on those first and carefully peeling the laminated assembly off but id still likely just print any more jumpwind i buy. you would be correct to use the rapid thinner on the metallic surfacer two fold as the rapid thinner has a little more bite on the plastic at normal dilution and is ideal for any surfacer particularly, pun intended, if you are going to be overthinning it and spraying mist coats with a small needle into targeted areas of scratches in multiple layers to fill in moderate cracks as it dries so fast when over reduced it allows you to pack in the talc or whatever that paint uses in their filler and not have it mess up surrounding areas or lift the particles you have just put into the crack on prior coats and really lay coat after coat, drying in just 20-30 seconds for the next one. I've been able to smooth out some areas id messed up sanding this way and hide imperfections the initial full coats didn't fill and even fill in tiny nub divots that did not seem worth using smelly and messy putty from a witch from mercury model i nipped the purple frame that's really soft plastic while really tired and wasn't careful and pulled out plastic instead of slicing it. gaia surfacer is just amazing for this at around 1:5 thin and 13-16 psi in my ps-270. i can't recall where i saw this technique i know it was a korean gunpla builder and it seems totally counter intuitive but worked so well i rarely dont thin the final drops in the cup and look for areas to touch up before cleaning the brush out after a surfacer. finally, why does gaia metallic master have to cost more than above average 25 year old scotch?? seriously.. is wild. i got some on a storewide 30% once and wow wish id gotten more it is truly the best. not quite worth 3x other brands. i usually use born paint metal thinner from galactic toys it is about the cheapest japanese metallic thinner at 15$/500ml and frankly amazing. i think it's nicer than mr hobby rapid especially on pearls and micas and primers. these lay down so thin and smooth but seem to cover better than when thinned with leveling thinner at least at my humidity and temperature. a really wet coat of paint with born metallic thinner on bare plastic will etch so be aware if you try it out. i've only done this while deliberately flooding runners with airbrush to test how hot it is but it definitely textured the plastic. since its not meant to be sprayed like this its not an issue really when sprayed in light coats with a little time to flash between them looking forward to more videos you seem to really get what you're doing and why it works. it is refreshing with so many creators who seem to have very little desire to understand the things behind the things they have chosen to do. i promise not to write my thesis out again unless you feature metallic thinners as its sort of my passion with 80% of my pieces using predominantly gaia, born and jumpwind metallics and custom mixes i make from bulk nitrocellulose and dry pigments and lately using bulk single solvents and playing with ratios to better understand how each solvent behaves alone and interacting with others in a mix to help disperse the pigments as im not really happy being told that metallic thinner works better or even seeing that it does i absolutely have to know the mechanics behind it before being satisfied and moving onto the next quest for understanding lmfao

i have the full gaia fluorescent line and this paint behaves best with standard or leveling thinner vs rapid in my testing. it may be hard to get a crystal clear gloss coat if applying over a metal base like a candy bright silver with rapid thinner. gaia flourescent is dye based pigments and incredibly soluble so does not need a hot or fast thinner. it also may want to bead up the pigments with a fast thinner if you overapply even a little causing little spots of thicker and more intense color. i may be wrong but my spraying candy lacquers on 2/3 of the 50 or so kits iv'e done has shown me i want a good slow leveling thinner for any true clear color when a 100% consistent tone is important.
@Sirmoshi1

basics for thinners is you only ever really need 4 different types ,Gaia metallic master for the best metallic outcome ,or Rapid thinner in its place ,and Leveling thinner , and enamel thinner/lighter fluid for enamel and panel line cleanup ,but if you are using acrylic paint then you will of course use the recommended thinner for those ,it is not compatible with Lacquer paints .all my guides will be lacquer based since that is what I use exclusively unless I state otherwise !

If you are using 3:1 thinner to surfacer ratio, should you not have 150ml thinner to 50ml surfacer for a total of 200ml? If your bottle is 150ml, thats a 2:1 ratio if I am not mistaken.

surfacer is only a 50 ml jar mix that 3 to 1 ,so because i only have 120 ml bottles i only mix it to fill the bottle you can add more thinner later if you need but it works just as good at my mix ratio for me ,i use some then add more thinner as i use the surfacer since i only have 120 ml bottles ,i thought i mentioned something about that in the video so yes you are correct that a 50 ml bottle will make 200 ml in the end Thank you for bringing this to my attention !

@Sirmoshi1
@Sirmoshi1 9 ай бұрын
Yes you can use any lacquer airbrush paint thinner in any of these paints ,but I recommend for the best looking finish to use the leveling thinner ,it works in any Lacquer based paint ,just please do not try and use Lacquer thinner from a hardware store because it is not the same it is much stronger than the paint thinner for airbrush paint and will melt your model kit and the o rings in your airbrush over time ,the normal Airbrush thinner is just fine also but the leveling thinner makes your life easier by leveling out the pigment in your paint so you do not get high and low looking spots You can use the airbrush thinner in any type of lacquer based paint also surfacer and also colors ,just know with a metallic paint it is best to use rapid thinner or the metallic master from Gaia ,these 2 will help the metal flakes in the metallic paint settle flat to give the best look in the end .
@Sirmoshi1
@Sirmoshi1 9 ай бұрын
well the silver is a metallic and it works best for pearl for some reason and metallic ,also you can use any of the Gaia Surfacers as a normal paint so I guess there is that ,gray is just a standard color ,in all honesty all the surfacer works the same ,it is there to adhere to a surface so the paint has a better base to stick to ,I use the silver when i am painting a pearl white that I want a silver tone too ,and I use the blue when I paint blue and pink for reds and yellow for yellows ,so I guess it is just a preference ,but the silver can save you a extra step when painting a candy color too so it all has its uses .

yes the paint is made to be thinned out ,check out my Mr Color mixing tutorial for the proper pre mix 1 to 1.5 is incorrect it should be 2 to 1 ,so you would get 30ml from a 10ml bottle and the mixing ratio is the same for the surfacer it should also be 2 parts thinner to 1 part surfacer for best spray ability and coverage ,think of it as a concentrate ,it is made to be thinned out so by pre thinning your paint it gives you more and it also allows it to be sprayed from the airbrush and give a even coat to the surface you are spraying it on ,also helps the lacquer to dry at a extremely fast rate

actual mica/flake in the silver along with some filler vs just grey pigment and filler. it still fills in small sanding scratches but is a tad less forgiving with the shine from the flake it will show deeper scratches like a sore thumb. you can use the silver on well prepped plastic, do an enamel or acrylic top coat and then wipe off spots to weather it and show the "metal" under for an incredibly realistic look on some planes, ships tanks gunpla etc you want to look like the frame is showing through the chipped paint etc. or use stippled liquid mask over the silver surfacer in the areas you want to show then paint with lacquer color then topcoat and just wait till dry and rub a microfiber towel to remove the mask bits and leave beautiful spots of silver "metal" with distinct sharp edges of top color coat where it looks like paint actually chipped off
