You are right regards overload protective device location. Put very simply Reg 433.2.2ii allows up to 3m between protective device and reduction in current carrying capacity of the cable. Still need to be mindful of fault protection and thermal withstand (adiabatic) etc. for the reduced capacity length of cable before the over current device. Keep up the good work!

Sir, being a former spark I sympathise. My wife and I live in a rented flat. A tenant moved out, and our agent, surprisingly organised a spark to the eirc in all of them, with the regs coming in April I think this year. He was great, being a former spark, knew what was involved. We offered him a coffee, beforehand, he declined. Job done in what an hour. With us sharing interesting stories to boot. We got a new nice metal with rcbos as there was a spare slot he split our two led fluorescent lights, nice touch as one was near to the board. We all had a great time. When it came time for the box swap, my wife and I deliberately choose to be out, so he could crack on. leaving him some biscuits and tea coffee, if he wanted some.

Had the same recently, I’ve been rewiring/ adding to existing on a kitchen. Parents working from home and homeschooling children. Children after 3:30pm addicting to playing their Xbox. Physical screaming constant when the power gets turned off. Disabled child also has a stair lift and uses it almost every 20-30 minutes. All connections/ joints had to be done through a 4 inch hole in the ceiling of the kitchen (floors upstairs were laminate). Had around 6-7 connections to make. Mentioned after first fixing (3 days prior) that when I come back that the power will need to go off for connections and testing, would be off for roughly 2-3 hours. Kitchen sockets one side of an rcd, ovens/ hob on another side. Downstairs lights also as I was installing spotlights. Every time I’d be cutting cables it would be turning power off/ cutting the internet off. Explained it was not possible for me to do any connections without cutting cables. I was then hit with the ‘oh... are you not able to do it with the power on?’ I get that it’s stressful for people working from home but they should try working around people working from home. Everything you do is an inconvenience to them, children screaming constantly etc. Like you said, if they’ve booked a meeting in it’s their problem. Yes you take it into consideration and try and be as reasonable as possible but it has got to the point now where like others have mentioned in the comments that I am there to do a job. If I was to tell them that me working around their phone calls 5x a day and video meetings added 2 hours labour onto the job then they’d soon question it. It’s frustrating to say the least. But it is what it is, this is probably the new norm from now on and we’ve just got to get on with it

How about tell the agent if the tenant will not let you turn the power off, they will be billed for a second EICR, or failed visit. If the tenant has to pay your bill, might be more cooperative BTW the 25mm tails means the flat owner can charge there Tesla out of the window 😁

Having been the tenant in that situation the LL/PM didn't bother to inform me that the sparky would be needing to turn the power off. Now it wasn't an issue plus I had a feeling that it was going to happen but if I'd been working from home they'd be getting told to take that up with the PM and come back when when they've given me notice.

Love watch these videos I am an electrician we mainly do office block and office refurbishments and other commercial stuff. I think your channels is the most realistic and tells it like it is in the real world, all these KZbin electricians and Instagram people who show all this perfect work flowing every reg ever invented to the letter is just rubbish. In the real world you would not get much work at all working like that it is just not viable. Love it you tell it like it is attitude keep them coming great to watch.

Just do what the electricians I work with do. They shout “power’s going off!” and then turn it off, no ifs no buts, no questions asked. Mind you this isn’t in occupied properties so perhaps not. OR, you could do it and if/when they kick off just give them the blanket “I apologise, I thought you were made aware that there would be disruption, won’t be long now blahblahblah” response and if things get really sour you can always turn it back on.

I work from home and my office contains a desktop machine which I use for everything. My incredibly expensive HP Elitebook is gathering dust. I only ever use it off site but I’ve never been off site for ages. The Elitebook isn’t bothered by power cuts so I can still work from that if the power is off. The battery will last about an hour, hour and a half, and I can always fit a secondary battery. Some of the Elitebooks you can fit a secondary ultra high capacity battery externally. On other laptops you can just use a UPS. I’m going to buy/make a UPS for the router (router specific with nothing else plugged in) so no interruptions to work. At a pinch I can just use 4G although typing on a phone is very, very slow and any video calls will be expensive. If you’re working from home then really you do need a UPS system regardless of electricians’ visits. They aren’t cheap but they aren’t expensive either and the cover they provide is vital so are priceless in terms of business continuity. It’s about planning ahead and making arrangements. It’s not like you fell out of the sky without warning and now want to turn the power off. You gave them notice, it’s up to them. They have no reason to complain when you arrive like you said. I am one of those very rare tenants that give honest feedback about visiting tradesmen and don’t act huffy and throw a tantrum when they arrive and do what they said they were going to do. Especially if I’ve been given notice. However I am one of those annoying tenants that will take an interest in what you are doing, not to supervise or look for things to complain about (or invent them when you do a perfect job!) but just to learn more about their respective industry out of interest and the constant desire I have to learn new things. I try to rein in my curiosity as much as I can though as I can appreciate how extremely annoying it must be.

Tom that 16mm T&E would need to be at least 50mm deep in the wall to omit RCD protection, otherwise it would need to be SWA or singles in metal conduit. Made this mistake myself a few times. If someone puts a screw through that T&E it’s only got that fuse to protect it. Was going to say the same thing on another video you did where you installed double insulated tails in the wall, needs to have mechanical protection of some form or an RCD. Also found out about the compression glands myself the other day, with different size holes in them! Didn’t know that.

As an employee of an unnamed energy company, there should be nothing between the cutout and meter. Ideally in that job DNO should be fitting a red link cutout to the upstairs flat, with its own board and meter. Wrongly or rightly, some would report that as potential theft having a customer isolator before the meter.

The pair of electricians here on Friday to test the house I rent minimised this issue by only having the power off for 10 minutes! They were only here for a total of 48 minutes! Pretty efficient EICRing for a 4-bed house, right‽ We didn't have to unplug appliances or anything! I wonder how much they charged my landlady for that... However, to the surprise of nobody, *they've Unsatisfactory'd this 2007 installation for having a plastic consumer unit(!)*, no RCD protection on lighting circuits, and because the RCD is supposedly faulty, though I'm not entirely convinced... (One guy made it seem like the RCD wouldn't reset and/or kept tripping whenever the other guy's tester was plugged into a socket. He literally said "it's tripping before you've even done anything"‽ 🤷‍♀️ Maaayyyybe? It _has_ always seemed slightly sensitive. But not to the extent of "it trips all the time for no reason"... 😕) I haven't yet seen their report (I can't wait! "LIM city", perhaps?) so I don't know if they've C2'd anything else. I'm just going off what they told me when they were here: that the consumer unit needs replacing because "the regulations have changed and plastic fuse boxes aren't permitted, they have to be metal", followed by stuff about no RCD for the lights. My landlady lets a fair number of properties in the area, including several on this same estate that this pair were supposed to test on the same day. If they're demanding a new consumer unit for all of those, that'll be a nice pay day for them!! (To be clear, at this point I have no reason to suspect my landlady of requesting a half-arsed report that covers little more than "does everything outwardly appear to work and be undamaged?". She's generally good with maintenance and such, and these 2 electricians were from a local company that looks suitably competent and is registered as a NICEIC Approved Contractor...)

I'm not a sparky, but I try to be mindful as a tenant that sometimes stuff has to be done. I knew about my last EICR about a month in advance, so I planned for it. I have an events business (which admittedly ain't doing a lot at the moment) and work full time too, so have a generator; and being a business I use a UPS on critical stuff like networks. I was told the power would be intermittent for a couple of hours, so I wheeled out the gennie; shifted the critical stuff to that and let him crack on with it. I know not everyone can do what I did, but for the sake of an hour or so, most people can tether a laptop to a mobile.

Not all tenants are like that. I’d actually say that if it’s the letting agent you are telling the power will have to go off it’s probably them that has failed to tell the tenant. So the first the tenant knows is when you tell them. I know, I’ve been on the receiving end. In the end I give the contractors my number and say if you need to do a job can you contact me as well then it saves a wasted journey.

all my computer/networking/phone equipment is on UPS backup power, so I wouldn't notice until it hit the 3 minute mark and started scheduled shutdown. well other than the lights going off and other than beeping alert. but everyone isn't me :)

I believe 433.2.2 ish says that the protective device can be at the other end as long as the cable is less than 3 meters long and provisions are made to limit the chance of damage to the cable?

use a Deferral form ask them to sign a pre-printed form that they are causing additional time + cost. We get this all the time where test are booked but every bodys told just to be refused when we turn up. having to sign some thing make them change their mind.

I just do what you say. Most of our clients don't mind being offline. They're happy for the break. How would they cope with a flippin powercut? If it's that essential they'd have a ups and/or generator. The reg regarding cable not.needing to be protected I think it's if it's a limited length and not likely to be damaged... Came up on my 18th exam. And re stuffing glands... Make sure they come with a flippin locknut! (Stares at TLC)
