@thomas Nagy little tip, that ceiling that the client wanted spotlights in, think it was the loft that you said you couldn't get access to. Put a spirit level up on the ceiling and clamp it in place with two plasterboard pole lifters, screwfix do them. get a multi tool and multi tool the plasterboard around the spirit level, I usually duct tape the hoover up to the multi tool to stop shit going everywhere. Then realise the poles and the level and you have a 2 inch wide 1.8m long neatly cut ceiling that you can then access the joists and drill through to run a cable through to do spotlights, I've done this loads and its super easy mate. I came up with it by accident. Then once your done and you got all your cabling in place plasterboard screw the bit you took down again and put some filler over the top, 90% of the time the board can be filled in one hit so you never even know it has come down. When your cutting the plasterboard just make sure your start and end points are at joists obviously. Anyway hope thats useful...................................

Honestly, if you feel tired when sleeping 6.5h then sleep 7 and be fine and dont stress yourself. A bit of wiggle room is always fine and if you wake up early use it. OR: if you can sleep fast hit a 30 minute sleep after dinner, when blood is off your brain / you have your weak spot anyways. I can go with 4 to 6 hours for a few days if a project needs it, but if i need creativity for problem solving and full brain power i have to get over 9 hours. Better to get half an hour more sleep with less stress then driving into something because you were too tired or get sick. Currently i have no problem getting up at 5:00 after going to sleep at 01:30 but thats not healthy or good or enough but because i dislocated my shoulder = pain when not moving for some time. (Had to get a part of the bone fixed after 7 weeks because it did not settle right and now im looking forward to another 3 months.) Glad to see you have fun at work, thats the only way to stay motivated. Money doesn't really work that way over longer periods. Side Story for Sparks: Had to replace one of 3 fuse holders (3 Phase 3x35Amps 400/380V) because it literally burnt up and exploded. Not because it got overcurrent but because of bad contact plate in the fuse holder (removable part / screw housing). Original fuseholder from 1960, the fuse on that phase blew one or two years ago for no reason, no overload. Did not change it myself back then so did not check the surroundings. Now the replaced fuse completely exploded last week because of overheating/bad contact on the holder. I suppose the contact was already bad on first tripping, the tech only replaced the fuse and did not check/clean the surfaces. Now this time there were only small parts of the metal left, everything else was welded, carbon/oxidized or disappeared. Bad Contact Resistance => Heat buildup over time even with low load => more carbon buildup/heat/resistance => fuse blew out. Ceramic/Metal screw-in, so nothing else was damaged luckily.

Different time, there will be some very weird reasons for the whole in the wall. Many Victorian terraces were built by factory owners as housing for their growing workforce, and many streets would therefore house members of the same family, and certainly groups of workmates, who would knock these holes through in order to provide means of escape from rent collectors, Peelers, tallymen, bailiffs, whoever you didn't want to see. Sometimes they just started off life as one larger house.

I honestly would love to learn more about how you determine the necessary sizes of incoming wire beyond just the Regulations. When you say 6 mil is that supposed to be the inside diameter of the wiring or is that SWG? I'm used to AWG as being Canadian but I would like to learn how the sizes are determined by actual installers. (I have tried to make heads or tails of it from wikipedia but the idea still escapes me and it took me talking electrical with my father to figure out AWG sizing.)

I don't know how this applies to the UK but in the US there's a certain no go zones for drilling through boards and yeah if you drill to the edge of it probably shouldn't be doing that in an attic if you drill through the center like you're supposed to I think you're okay to and not affecting the structural Integrity of the wood.

Bought that exact model UNI-T tester off aliexpress, used it my entire apprentice never a problem. I often like to buy cheap tools, expecting to have to buy the more expensive variant when it either breaks or doesn't perform (e.g. fluke for tester) but more and more I'm surprised with the results I get, especially for the price. You should check out the Xiaomi laser distance finder, picked up one for $18 AUD and it's dead accurate, looks like a toy it's tiny but I swear by it.

I've had them for over 10 years, they've been battered in tool bags, been forgotten about and driven 100s of miles in a car's engine bay (oops), etc and they've never missed a beat. I normally don't cheap out on tools, especially those I use often, but these UNI-T meters are fantastic.

This seams to be a bit of a waste of time just my own opinion, also the prefent tripping other RCDS that may be down streem you can test line to neutral and probe the incoming neutral thay way only the RCD under test will trip

One scam that use to go about with the loft issue you mentioned, was loft insulation companies. They would offer you a deal on loft insulation, lay the insulation and then do the same next door.
