I still remember when Garrett said "I wished Holminster Switch had more fire" then when he got to Vanaspati said "Oh so that's where they put the rest of the fire." Paraphrased quotes, but you get the idea. I just like how these smaller things throughout the game that Garrett wanted improvement on in an earlier expansion somehow got an improvement in a later dungeon expansion.

I didn't get that impression. It just seemed to be a collection of worlds whose memories she absorbed; each has its own tale, just like the worlds of the Dragons, Ea, and Omicrons outside the dungeon, but there isn't a particular emotional "progression" between them that I took note of.

My favorite takeaway from Vanaspati was the name of the first boss's moves. Its super simple: "What is Right?" and "What is Left?" - for Right/Left half-room attacks. Simple. But contextualized: This was a Radz-at-Han guard who has turned. To protect the villagers he is forced to slay the villagers who have already succumbed to grief and turned into monsters. His own grief is manifested into two questions: "What is Right?" And "What is Left?"

Variant dungeons were GREAT, Garrett's take be damned! The puzzle of working out various paths was really great, unique gameplay, assuming you worked to figure it out yourself and didn't just read an online guide. It took some patience, and certainly wasn't for everyone, but it was great for what it was. The main issue with variant, criterion, and criterion savage dungeons was the reward structure, which I agree could use some work. But the gameplay itself was wonderful if you had the patience for it.
@Zakjuh2 ай бұрын
Also the difficulty tbh. Criterions should have been more entry level and approachable for anyone who wanted to pull together a group of friends and do it. Instead, Criterions felt Savage and Criterion Savage just felt Savage-er. In the future, I'd like them to balance it more. That way Criterion Savage can be its own thing as well.

Though yes, I'm attempting Savage but struggling - that Epic Hero title is very tempting but it's SO unforgiving.

@@Zakjuh Yeah, Criterion Savage was quite litterally a 4 player ultimate, as it had similar duration, everything was "perform perfectly or get 1 shot", a single death meant a wipe, and had a fully instance enrage from the moment the first enemy was pulled. It was definitely some oversights on the challenge, but also the other big reason it was viewed kinda poorly was (at least until the final one) there was no real reason to even run it due to having basically no rewards.

I think Vanaspati is S-tier. While the overall vibe/theme doesn't change much over the course of the dungeon, they do explore that theme in different areas and terrain in a way that I find really compelling: going through the wilderness, trudging through a stream, then through the wrecked village, then to the temple ruins with the skies swarming with monsters-it worked as an escalation for ME, anyway. I'll also add that Aitiascope has some REALLY awkward trash pulls with forced single-pulls, long waits for "RP", and the Papalymo-induced explosion moment which makes your own efforts to burn down the trash seem futile. Kyle said it wasn't egregious, but over repeat runs these things add up and become worse and worse. That said, overall I think this is a really sensible list. I mean, uh... anger! Rage! I don't recall exactly when you got through ARR (if it was before or after the Cape Westwind change), though the reason Rhitahtyn is more memorable for a lot of players at the time was Cape Westwind was the first 8 player trial, which on release was actually somewhat difficult due to the systems at the time as well as people not having their job gear accessable. Later on when gear was higher, more jobs were added, and the game systems changed, he became a glorifed punching bag but the meme of it being the "hardest fight in the game" stuck and was always commented by people when they got it in roulette, and when they announced it was being reworked to a solo instance people were kinda sad, sending it off in style with synced min il no job stone runs.

Garret's merciless on Aitiascope. lol Amon's goodbye in Aitiascope was actually one of my favorite moments in EW & the closure that his/Hermes' character needed. His character arc would be unfinished & unrefined writing-wise if not for Aitiascope. And his speech with him being almost fully devoid of hope legit made me cry. And if you pick the more compassionate dialogue option at the end of his cutscene, his response hits even more. Though I do agree the dungeon had waaay more potential & OST could've been way better. First two bosses & visuals could've been way cooler too. I'll just have to disagree that the story in it wasn't good. I thought it was peak writing but I wish they could've made it even more emotional. Though if I were to rank the dungeon itself, I'd almost agree with you. It's a B for me. About Zot, I love the OST of Zot because it tugs at my nostalgic hearstrigs, since the theme in itself references Golbez's theme. But I get it that it may not work for someone who didn't play FFIV. Great vid as always guys! 🙌

I can get giving Amon the finger after all he did, but I didn't, and it was good to watch him come to terms with his own mistakes. If only for a moment. I think that moment alone elevated the character. "If life is so sacred, so precious, why fill it with such misery?" "Man wallows in a hell of his own making, without purpose or meaning." "To live is to suffer... And I would end that suffering by my own hand!" "It matters not if it flies in the face of all believed right and just. Death is the only solution!" "That is my truth. My answer to the question, and yet..." "...Even as the words pass my lips, I am filled with doubt." "Has my search reached its end?" "Was this the only way?" "After all these years..." "Is this the answer I was hoping for?" I'm a sucker for a good moment of pained introspection at the end. Frankly, I think it could've stewed for a bit longer before Asahi showed up to yap. The delivery was great, too. The sense of panic, of realization in his voice.

For Zot, everything the boys mentioned is from FF4: the weird giant with the Mega Man arm cannon trash mob, the music, the Magus Sisters themselves. I have fond memories of FF4, so I liked seeing all these things. Agreed that the packs followed by the 3 Sisters is some of the roughest (for its level) dungeon encounters. For Babil, again, the doctor and Barnabas are from FF4. Anima is a great capstone. It's fun to see all the friendly NPCs in the early section. But I dunno, I think I like Zot more than Babil. Vanaspati is my S-tier dungeon. Great urgency, grappling with the blasphemies seriously for the first time, watching the people turn and then the family is a gut punch the first time. The escalation from forest to village to temple, all with a great set of dungeon loot. Awesome dungeon. Ktisis, I rate far lower than the boys. Except for having the Ancients as trust companions, didn't really feel strongly about this dungeon. The banter of the trust companion is the real highlight, and nothing else really stood out. Dungeon loot isn't very interesting either. Aitiascope deserves higher. Call backs to dead friends were great. I get the reused models complaint, but I liked having a remixed Amon as the final boss just so we can humiliate that guy one more time. And Asahi showing up just to shit talk was great; no one out simps Asahi! Dead Ends is perfect, no notes. I want to know if the first boss has more kills than any other dungeon boss. Praise Ra-La! Final Rating: S - Dead Ends, Vanaspati; A - Zot, Babil; B - Ktisis, Aitiascope.

Yeah another incarnation of Hermes/Amon was a bit much for the final boss given how many times we've already fought him, even though I do kind of agree it fits. Livia and Ricky Ticky Tavi though, no idea why they were bosses. As random trash mobs, sure. They really don't have the impact in the grand scheme of things to warrant being a boss fight, even as tragic as Noraxia's death was they were ultimately not anyone we really got to know, and the random scions that weren't even given names. Keeping names below vague to avoid spoilers for anyone not caught up... 😅 Ilberd, on the other hand, definitely should have been one of the bosses, and not just trash. His impact on us was considerably greater, with the Crystal Braves betrayal and near assassination attempt, to the direct result of losing the finest pupil. And I think Thordan would make a good boss as well given his direct impact with both our bro and the dragon lady. Other than that we don't have too many truly dead villains up to this point. And even a some not only alive and well, but in the process of a redemption arc, and one that redeemed themselves in their final moments. The Ascians got their memories back once they reached the underworld, and would have realized they were in the wrong (except for Hermes because he was nihilistic even in pre-sundered life), so they would make sense if they appeared as allies in the Aitiascope. Maybe Vauthry but he was more just an annoying spoiled brat, didn't really make an emotional impact. Varis, maybe could work, even if there wasn't a direct emotional impact... it could be argued he was more or less responsible for all the losses we'd had up through Stormblood.

Dead Ends was my favorite story dungeon during my playthrough. It immediate hits you with the idea of this tour de force of all these dead and gone worlds, but you get to see their last moments and as you go through the dungeon the dread keeps building. First with the plagued world, where no one cured the illness and they all eventually succumbed to the infected like a zombie outbreak to finding a world in the crucible of war after finally uniting under one standard, but still having people desire their own cultures and dreams separate from the whole and how far both would go to destroy each other. Then it finally ends with fatalism where people decided it would be better to die in happiness than in sadness and the extreme methods they would use to get there... And the worst part is it's all understandable. My grandmother passed not too long ago and her last days were mostly out of consciousness, struggling to breath, slowly being strangled by a failing body. I could see how someone would want to go at a time of their choosing and in a manner that was painless and filled with joy and how that could spiral into cultural death. I think all of this is why it is so effective as a dungeon.

Two-Shields was a weird callback, even at the time. However, after the 6.1 rework of Cape Westwind into a solo duty where you basically go in and assassinate him? He ordered his soldiers to evacuate and save themselves, and once they signaled for help, they came back to assist him. Once they died, he went gigachad, and did everything he could to kill you, effectively setting the ground on fire, and pinning himself and you down in the flames, and now it's a race to see who dies first. It felt more impactful after the 6.1 changes. Overall, though, I agree with the mid ranking of Aitascope, when you take it in isolation. The story relevance and meaning pushes it up to High-A, Low-S for me.

I perspanlly think Vanispati is one of the best dungeons in this game. Easily S-tier. Its impossible for me to think of it in a vacuum because of the time that Endwalker came out, and how the trauma happening to the characters was soo deeply reflective of the trauma many were facing. As a parent, watching the mother Matanga and her kids give in to despair and then have to kill them was heart wrenching for me. FFXIV pften pulled its punches, we hadnt even lost a true Scion since Papalymo. And now, were watching thousands of people transform and need to die. It was heart wrenching for me. I like the motif, so the music creates a feeling of both urgency and depression (perfect in that moment) the bosses were visually wonderful for the vibe, and the mechanics were strong. One voice cant change the board, but Vani is S tier to me, and i would argue it is my favorite thematic dungeon even though i know im going to be sad through the entire run of it.

The final fight of Tower of Zot is pretty incredible, I agree 100%, but there's a whole other factor to it! That fight asks things of you that no other boss fight in this game does - you start off attacking a single-target when it's just Cindy, then you switch between one- and two-target optimizations depending on whether Sandy's joined in, and during the Delta Attack you've gotta -work- to keep uptime! And that's not all - with Mindy off to the side, you have three-target multidotting! This isn't a big deal for some classes, but for others, it's *incredibly* engaging. How often as a Samurai do you have three Higanbanas ticking, nevermind switching -back and forth- between two different rotations? Think about doing that fight as a Black Mage, as it was during Endwalker, sometimes using Fire/Blizzard 3 to swap states and sometimes HF/HB 2 if Sandy's there, sometimes spending Polyglot stacks on Foul instead of Xenoglossy, and then there's getting casts off during Delta! Thankfully, that was one of the *exceedingly* rare times it made sense to have three single-target Thunder 3s ticking away, feeding you those -juicy- Thunderhead procs all the more often. What an incredible fight!
@DLMoridin2 ай бұрын
I always just focus'd down Cindy. Cause if you manage to kill one of the other two first, she just revives them. They dont have anywhere near the amount of HP needed to be a issue, so focuing Cindy and avoiding dying just seems better way to do it.

@@DLMoridin If Cindy's the priority target, she'll definitely fall before the others - it's people attacking willy-nilly that would lead to others dying first and getting picked back up. I find it really hard to seperate the story from the dungeons so kudos to you for sticking to your criteria this long. With that in mind I have to say Aitiascope is probably my favourite dungeon in Endwalker because of the restraint the team showed when making a dungeon that was essentially "callbacks: the dungeon". Yes they could have gone larger in scope for who shows up and how, but I love that they focused in on ARR specifically. Back before all the expansions came along to "expand" the world and lore all we had were Hydaelyn, Garleans and the Ascians. The Aitiascope is the road to Hydaelyn, with our path blocked by the Garleans we defeated, and with the Ascian who started this whole mess to round it up. Even the callbacks in between were all characters from ARR, either base game or patches. It was the perfect send off to the world and characters that started the 10 year journey and I'm personally very happy they didn't try to represent everything that came after. After all we wouldn't have all this if it wasn't for ARR's success.

Anima WAS originally meant to be a trial in the rough draft for 6.0. In fact it was even under consideration to be the final one. 6.0 would have been the "Garlean Empire" expansion, 7.0 would have been the rest of Endwalker, but the team decided that about 75% of the mystery around the Ascians had already been uncovered in Shadowbringers, so there wasn't so much of a need (I do think liberating an extra province or two would have been neat if possible) Also Stormblood already went through the liberation of two different Garlean territories, so it could have gotten repetitive, so they just blended the story to include both things. In the end, Anima was just a dungeon boss that FELT like a 4-man trial. They probably could have broken precedent and given us a 4th trial in Endwalker, but Anima trial leading almost directly into Zodiark would have badly undermined Anima. Re: Aitiascope: I can never dislike it because it references Ysayle. She comes in and gives you an opening to survive the final boss with her iceberg shield. She is my possibly my favorite character, and this is the first time she was referenced since like 3.3, whereas some of the other deceased get referenced repeatedly. Also it's generally beautiful. And as far Rhytahn being the second boss, Yoshi-P had said he wanted to give that character a makeover since he was a running joke with Cape Westwind. If you recall, he was a general who Gaius appointed to be his Field Marshall on merit. He was actually supposed to be an example of Gaius being a pragmatist who went against the grain of Garlean racism, so there was an extra need to rehab the character. Since most veteran players will never be able to do the heavy hitting solo duty that replaced Cape Westwind, putting him in Aitiascope as a boss fight made a degree of sense. I agree they could have gone a lot harder with references, but a 'C' is really harsh to me. Also Dead Ends is my favorite dungeon in the whole game, and I've done all of them at this point. Would have been furious if that wasn't S-Tier.

First off Great video! Second I think the first 2 post msq dungeons should be on the list. They came out on 6.0 too. Smileton is kinda meh to me but Stigma Deltascape is great! Omicron history dungeon!

I love Final Fantasy IV, and was mostly tickled by many of its references in Endwalker. However, of all the FF14 expansions, it tiptoed the line of 'shoehorning' in those prior Final Fantasy references compared to the more subtle approaches in Shadowbringers and before, so I'm not surprised that some of Endwalker's content can feel a bit off in style and continuity artistically.

OK for my base complaint that you would expect is that you should have add the 2 side dungeons since it does come packaged with the 6.0 patch and should be thought of in merit for base dungeon discussions. It would be a great discussion of what the 14 team thought of when designing end game content that would be repeated in the base expansion.

My only change for my personal list is swapping Vanaspati with Kitisis, Kitisis has some sections that get REALLY slow on like your 20th run, Vanaspati doesnt, plus Kitisis's gear is just a recolor from the Hero's Gauntlet, while Vanaspati has a unique set (and a very good one at that)
@c.82922 ай бұрын
I get so sad doing vanispati that I take a break and skip it by just doing roulettes when I'm at the right level. The mom elephant getting despair and then dooming her kids is so sad
@Asin242 ай бұрын
Really? Vanaspati has the start waiting for the mobs to spawn and the RP with the dragon and worst the part where you have to literally sit there for a long time waiting for the elphant RP to finish. Kitisis is vastly faster then that. Kitisis doesn't have parts like that to slow you down at all. I mean you can just prefer Vanaspati but if its an issue about stuff slowing down, then your absolutely wrong.

7:20 You were not prepared for Delta Attack. I think what you mean about Zot's monsters not blending with the location is deliberate. This is very evil Allagan tower conquering a native people. Like all the Garlean steel and tech didn't fit in Doma Castle. 12:15 I'd be down to Anima Unreal. 14:00 Vanaspati stole all of Holminster's fire. 19:52 Thank you! I am so glad I'm not the only one who is like "that is a cat not a wolf!" 23:25 Before Doubleshields got removed as a trial people would fool sprouts by hyping him up and convincing them it was a super tough fight. They would put down waymarks and signs, talk about bullshit mechanics... then mow him down in 20 seconds. The charge and the shrapnel spread move were two of those made up fanon mechanics.

I don't really have any complaints about these rankings. I think you're being pretty harsh on Aitiascope, but that's because I (like Kyle) LOVE me some Wiz Biz, and Aitiascope is full of that. I also love the _meaning_ of "aitiascope": "aitia" is the Greek root of things like the modern word "etiology," which means the "cause" of something. These days, it usually means the cause of _disease,_ but in antiquity and medieval philosophy, etiology was the study of why things are, of what caused the world to be. So "the Aitiascope" is literally the Lense of Creation.
@jggiant4876Ай бұрын
I love most of the callbacks in Altiascope, but I don't like that they just did the XIVth legion subordinates as bosses. One idea I had was Livia and Rhitahtyn as the first boss together, maybe Thordan as the 2nd boss with Iceheart making her appearance there, then Amon/Asahi as the final boss with Yotsuyu showing up to assist.
@reshypoo94472 ай бұрын
So funny, I felt the actual inverse. Aitiascope was the only dungeon I liked of 6.0, and my go-to (with trust) for 81-89 wondrous tails. All the other ones felt like a chore and induced an physical sigh of annoyance when they showed up. Dead Ends especially.

Adding another comment to stand by Variant Dungeons! They're absolutely the best "normal" dungeons mechanically in Endwalker (gameplay is always king to me, everything else bonus, that might just somewhat elevate or downgrade) and I've only done all of the first one and about half+ of the second one. 5-6 really unique bosses (and not just "unique", actually fun mechanics), fun puzzles to think about that tie into some neat lore (Nanamo lore is not even the singular focus of Sil'dihn, it has Ul'Dah, the Amal'jaa and Sil'dihn lore, actually underdeveloped elements that I think really deserved that bit of focus they got). I also like them as this pretty side setpiece and it's been fantastic solo content for me to just jump into here and there until I get it done. And if I don't feel like doing the puzzle part, I just look up the solutions because the bosses are great. In terms of encounter design itself, I think in a general sense, EW dungeons are pretty generic/formulaic: there are relatively few bosses that do mechanics that are in any way unique to them. And that would be fine if these standard tropes weren't sometimes used in the least interesting way possible. An argument can be made "everything" is like this, but to me it really stood out in EW (and as it turned out, I wasn't alone in that with one of the main loud complaints that kept coming up during the EW patch cycle especially being the encounter design). For this reason, I think Tower of Zot is my favourite EW dungeon. On the opposite side, I think Ktisis and Atiascope are probably the best examples of this homogenization among the base expansion dungeons and my least favourites of the base expansion. I enjoyed them, in fact greatly enjoyed them on my first run especially (right now personally probably would rank Atiascope above Ktisis myself because I like the Rhitathyn fight and everyone paving the way for you), but there is almost nothing unique to either of those two dungeons on a gameplay level. Really pretty aesthetically and musically, cool narratively, but pretty empty otherwise and well, I'm still playing a game here. If FFXIV was just a walking simulator, this wouldn't be an issue, but at this point, it has shown it does want to be a game, as well. As said, I didn't hate any of these, but by the end and especially by the end of the EW patch dungeons, I really started to feel how everything was blending together and that kind of only happened with a bunch of the ARR optional dungeons, maybe some HW stuff. You can do fun stuff within these formula constraits (Dead Ends and Vanaspati are good examples of that to me, Zot is my favourite as just being really cool mechanically) but DT ended up being a pretty strong (and unexpected because, as said, I still enjoyed everything) breath on fresh air on my part.

I LOVED Asahi showing up to be a huge bitch, personally. It was entirely unexpected and I loved that he was only pissed because Amon betrayed Asahi's #1 crush, and was SO mad he was going to drag Amon down to superhell with him. Written for me, personally, apparently.

FF4 was the first FF with real story and characters, and it holds up surprisingly well even today so I'm just going to invalidate your Zot opinions. 😉 Tbf, OG Zot was a high tech futuristic dungeon so robots made more sense. Its only in remasters/remakes that the setting changed.

Was hard thinking which dungeon could be the C tier one seen on the promo, and when you reached Aitiascope I realized I totally forgot it exists, so yeah, def agree there. The bosses were soooooo lame, that the only thing going for the dungeon is the callbacks to the story (which you can miss while paying attention to your gameplay).
