I think my favorite little bit about Alzadaal's Legacy is the fact it's a spin on the "Dragon's Hoard." Vrtra spent many years slowly accumulating that stash of gold, not to hoard it completely, but as emergency funds when Radz-at-Han needed it.

I've left a ton of comments over the years downplaying the importance of nostalgia for other FF games, but the music of Fell Court of Troia gives me *chills* because of its relationship with the original. It's dark and melancholic, very fitting for the dungeon's vibe, but the music it references, Troian Beauty, from FF4, is *such* the opposite - it's beautiful and idyllic, like a sunny day in a pristine garden with no rush or worry. It was the first time young me just put down the controller and got lost in the music. It was the epitome of major, but now, in the void-twisted ruins and corrupted garden that still hints at a paradise lost, it's the very epitome of minor. There's still an unhurriedness to it, but instead of peace and leisure, now it's the peace of emptiness. I used to be a musician, but in particular, I was an arranger, and my appreciation for this is far greater than my enjoyment of any bangers.

To add a bit of context to the "midi" sounding nature of many of the FF4 reference songs. The original composer, Nobuo Uematsu has strong influences with 70's prog rock like ELP, so even many of the old FF remixes apart from the OSTs maintain that electronic synth sound. Of course, Soken, with his influences of Rock a few decades later, will happily throw in that juicy grimy guitar solo on Lunar Subterrane.

Much is made about the FFIV references in the EW patches, but Alzadaal's Legacy is a HUGE FFXI reference. Numerous XI references all rolled together, in fact. Those references also come from the expansion that introduced the Mamool Ja to Final Fantasy, so it's not just the visuals of the opening area of the dungeon that serve as a bit of a tease and table setting for Dawntrail. Newfound adventure, indeed.

The lopporits have some interesting conversations if you stop to see them in Smileton. One insults the other's mother, there's a stranded lopporit with a campfire on a isolated ledge and a few other bits. Also the Omnicrons are just Autobots vs Decepticons if the Decepticons won.
@forcesinbalance56858 күн бұрын
Something I think is undersold here in regards to Alzadaal's Legacy is the way it brings in the trash mobs. This is not yet another dungeon where the trash packs are just standing around in the path, waiting to be slaughtered. In the first section, we have ambushers who leap out of the undergrowth. In the second, we have the rampart-portals that drag in sea creatures from outside the walls--and one of my favorite things about this mechanic is that you can _spare_ some of those sea creatures by killing the portal fast enough; you can look out through the walls after the fight and see the survivors chilling out there in the water. And in the treasure room section, we have the classic mimics, hiding in plain sight. It makes the runs between bosses more interesting, and the portals, in particular, introduce a sort of repeatable challenge element. Is it worth changing the usual tactic of grouping up the pack and AoEing it to death to focus fire on the portal? Can we kill it faster? How many creatures can we keep out of the fight this time?

The Lunar Subterrane was both a fantastic blast from the past as a fan of Final Fantasy 4, and being a way to cap off the climax of confronting Zeromus. From going through the portion of the moon like in FF4, to the segment of going into Golbez’s memory after in thirteenth painted such a beautiful picture of how the thirteenth is both a refrence, and it’s own thing that had a culture and a story. I know I’m biased as a lover of FF4 for a lot of what happened in post patch Endwalker, but to me, I felt it was tasteful fanservice that culminated in our decisive battle with Zeromus. Does it get repetitive on subsequent runs? Yes, of course. But that first time was unforgettable to me. Perhaps I’m just clapping because I recognize it - I would’ve lost my shit if there was anything to do with Cecil and the main party - though that’s sort of what Zero does, but I had so much fun going through it for the first time.

My poor Lapis Manalis ;) I think it's my favorite non-leveling dungeon of all (best leveling dungeon goes to Origenics, what an insane dungeon). But the bosses are great, the vibes are incredible, and the music is phenomenal. I don't necessarily disagree with the list, but it's not how I felt. I must confess, I loved Troia initially. I did it in Duty Support with the NPCs and took my time, looking at all details and speculating on how all of it would be relevant later. I was sort of confused as to why so much of it ended up not mattering later, and when I found out it was mostly an FF4 reference, it kind of soured my enthusiasm because if the details exist purely as a reference, and not anything you'll need to know for later, it's kind of just empty lore? So when I got to Lunar Subterene, I was pretty unenthusiastic because I knew every strange thing was just *yet another* FF4 reference, and not lore that would have any meaning. It's petty, but that Antlion in particular bothers me because he has two FF14 ant minions right before the fight, and yet he looks *drastically* different like a completely different species. But I knew better than to think "Oh is this because..." since the answer was just "No, it's just a reference to FF4". I think there's a sweet spot to balance between "being a reference" and "using only new material" and I do think the patches of EW leaned too heavily on "being a reference" to the point where I considered it a detriment to both the story and the aesthetics at times. It's not as bad as the Ivalice Raids, but still bad enough that it killed a lot of motivation for me by the second half of EW's patches. Though I did love Aetherfont, since that actually felt like an FF14 setting, rather than a reference. Maybe it actually was a reference, but it fooled me if so, which is the spot the game *should* aim to be in, IMO. It also slightly soured me retroactively on some of the leveling dungeons as well - like why the hell was the Garlean primal just a weird monster that looks like that called Anima? There isn't a lore reason, it's just "FF4 had Anima". And that just feels hollow. So yeah, harsh as it sounds, the EW patches made me like EW *less* not more. Not to such a degree that I hate the expansion or anything (I still do love it), but parts of it do feel cheaper to me now. It's a good thing I'm one of the (few?) people who actually really liked Dawntrail start to finish, or I'd probably be much more frustrated regarding the story than I am now.

I think (20 minutes in) that the inner category rankings should go left to right, just to make it easier to see visually which you think is a stronger A vs a weaker one. Lapis is pretty, but all the fights are serious snooze fests and the music sounds like shopping mall muzak, so it's a D or low C for me. Ktisis is probably a C for me; the setting and story framing are cool, but I didn't think they made the best use of the biome transitions, and I have never been able to get the last boss fight down, so I want to weep every time I get it in roulettes. Honestly, though, none of them suck. I just wish expert roulette didn't work the way it does so you don't doomed to doing the same 2 dungeons at a time, over, and over, and over for months.
