"I was recently taught" or "I recently learned" - your construction is comprehensible but grammatically incorrect.

Hey! Awesome explanation there! What do you think of those tons of other connecting words out there? (or, but, also, then, if, else ) It's quite overwhelming and it seems impossible to learn them all. Any 80/20 set of words we should be focusing on first? Any cheatsheets?

hey bro, do you have any books for intermediate learners, I have HSK5, I can speak and understand Chinese. but I find myself stuck with the words that i have learned with HSK5, and I don't seem to have many sentence patterns when talking. I can understand you pretty well when you speak Chinese and can sense the patterns you use but I cant remember them after or write them down. What do you suggest? Salut from France.
@FluentinMandarinDotCom7 жыл бұрын
If you're at the intermediate level it's better to move on to native Chinese materials, in my opinion. Try subscribing to some of the Chinese TV stations on KZbin like 湖南卫视 浙江卫视 and checking out some of their shows with subtitles. Some of the entertainment shows are easier to understand. Or you can check out some Chinese news online on websites like sina.cn qq.com etc

@FluentinMandarinDotCom8 жыл бұрын
+Max Peck I did mention in the video that there are others, I just wanted to simplify things rather than just present a long list, 还有 is a good one to know actually, 以及 is used more in writing.

Russian has two "and's", one is like the English "and", the other is somewhat oppositional, like the English "while". Ukrainian also has an additional "and" which seems to be used to chain several nouns or adjectives together but not sentences. Dunno why I'm telling this :D
@FluentinMandarinDotCom7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've found a number of languages have multiple words for 'and' :-)

and is ambiguous in every language i have studied but ask Skultety in case he found one where AND is not ambiguous.

Hey so... I live in Guangdong province... I've gotten used to using "Haiyou还有" in many of these situations as many of the locals seem to do so as well... But I'm sure how correct it is. Example: 明天我要去看电视还有那在KTV唱歌!We also often use 所以 like... 明天是我们的休息天所以我们应该去一起玩。 I'm sure I have some errors grammatically speaking there, but I've just all together haven't used 'and' conjunctions ~_~; I'll try to integrate them into my vocabulary for in the future.

hai you "but also" is my best translation for it. AND is an ambiguous language word in most languages but with proper translation CAN be Disambiguated!
@keegster71676 жыл бұрын
If native speakers do it regularly, then it may be informal or not completely accepted, but it is definitely grammatical.
@QuizmasterLaw6 жыл бұрын
Chris (as I understand his wife is Chinese) knows Chinese grammar very well. There are seveal words which translate as "and". Which to use depends on context. I suggest you take his course it's really brilliant!
@hzxswyg6 жыл бұрын
I am a Native Chinese speaker. The first sentence "明天我要去看电视还有那在KTV唱歌!" is very confusing to me. I don't really understand what you want to express. To me it is like "I'm going to watch television tomorrow AND there in the KTV sing". 还有 literally means 'there's more' of course you can use 还有 to express 'AND' meaning in one sentence, however in this sentence, you use 那 but there is nowhere it is to represent in the context. if you want to express in THAT ktv sing. then the correct order is ...还有在那个KTV唱歌! this makes more sense to me. The second sentence "明天是我们的休息天所以我们应该去一起玩。" makes sense and I can understand very well. I am not sure if there is any grammar error BUT we use this often.

I think what's interesting about spoken English, is that people use "and" as a filler word and sometimes join disjoint phrases with it. e.g. "I was going to the shops... and I saw someone I knew... and I asked them what they were doing... and they said... ". In mandarin I suppose you would just separate the phrases and there's no need to use filler words,or the filler word might be 那 (or 还有) e.g. 我昨天去商店了,那时候看到我的朋友,问问他“你在干啥?”。(那)他说了.... Thoughts?
@FluentinMandarinDotCom6 жыл бұрын
You do separate the phrases in Chinese, but there are some fillers like 然后, which is used quite a lot, but the point is people often pause in the middle of the sentence, and on words like 这个 那个 这种 etc, and they may add these words to the middle of the sentence to create some thinking time.
@ElZilchoYo6 жыл бұрын
To be fair even in English you can get away with not using "and" in those sentences, as long as you do a little pause.

at 5:48 the english phrase is "I like China, and I want to study there" I noticed the preposition ends the sentence here, which breaks the rules in english. My question here is, does chinese also have a similar rule where the prepositions should not end the sentence? the correct english sentence should be "I like China, and there I want to study" but maybe you are putting the english in a more literal translation
@FluentinMandarinDotCom6 жыл бұрын
It's not that the preposition ends the sentence, it's just divided there. In this case it could be divided into 2 sentences.
