No man. Its a lot more complicated than this. Here are the issues. 1. CyberSecurity is a catch phrase that is overused and abused. Jobs where people run patch management can and are called CyberSec, because patching is security..right? Not going to bore you with more examples. Just know that it is generally an overused term and probably being used because someone thinks it sounds more elite than 'patch management' or whatever it actually is. 2. CyberSec is a hugely diverse field, even if the term is being used properly. Look at the SANS training roadmap and you can see Management, Forensics, Network, Pen Testing, Incident Response, Malware Analysis, etc. So, even if there are 'thousands' of CyberSec job openings, the likelihood that it is for your particular skill set is low. 3. Most companies have no idea what they are doing. I have interviewed with Amazon, Facebook, Google, etc. for jobs in CyberSec. My resume CLEARLY states my skillset as 'malware analyst' and specifically "static analysis' with skills such as "IDA, Olly, x64debug, Win32, x86/64 asm, elf, etc". So I expect that when someone flies me in for an interview, the job is relevant to my resume. WRONG. I have sat through 4hr interviews being asked how to secure a firewall, and show me examples of SQL injection, etc. All things that I personally have no desire in doing. But the companies (at the time at least) have no idea what skill sets are applicable and how. So be prepared for many disappointing interviews where you might just have to say to them, as I did, "I am sorry, but this is not what I want to do, and I never listed any of this on my resume." 4. The more technical you get, the more diverse you have to be. If you want to do malware analysis, be prepared to learn many languages, tools, and platforms. Deobfuscating JS might lead to an encrypted/encoded payload, that ends up being WMI code, that ends up generating shellcode. And yes, that is a very real and very common example. On the other hand, being in a less technical role, like a typical red/blue team or a corp sec team (policy and procedures) is going to have a much simpler and consistent skill set. The pay isn't going to vary like you would think it should, so do what you like and don't expect to get paid significantly more for knowing significantly more. 5. Not many companies have a real need for security beyond red/blue teams and corp sec. If you want to do forensics or malware analysis, you are going to have a much harder time finding jobs because far less companies offer those jobs. On the other hand, Colleges are pumping our high-level, non-technical (or barely technical) "Cyber Security" types of degrees, so if you don't want to do the low level, technical stuff, expect to compete with a LOT of college grads willing to take minimal wages. 6. If you want to do DoD work, you have to have TS/SCI clearance. I personally have been waiting 2 years for mine to adjudicate, and that is the average. So, what do you do in the meantime? Personally I took a job that I am overqualified and overpaid for so that I can spend time keeping fresh on RE skills. Time to eat, but this list could easily go on further.
@koalakakes
@koalakakes 6 жыл бұрын
Its worth noting there are a lot of contract SOCs opening around the US/world that can help newer guys get into the field. Most basic Security Ops stuff is starting to get passed off to these companies because we cant afford the sheer number of FTEs going through the bulk of events. Most of our internal ops staff have specializations, i personally run the Vulnerability Management platform while also handling incident management, soc alerts, endpoint alerts, email security, and much more random security work that needs to get done. Cybersecurity is about as diverse as IT itself.

Miguel Perez, ask away. I have more professional experience doing IT admin/engineer/architect , but I have been doing security a white as well.
@typedeaf
@typedeaf 5 жыл бұрын
Miguel Perez, I would say first try to find something you are passionate, or interested it, it makes a huge difference. If you look forward to learning new things, then it will be like a book that you can't put down. If you have little or no passion for the subject, it will be like pins and needles. Many entry level jobs look for the entry level certifications, especially from CompTIA; its just one more thing that might differentiate you from the other person applying for the position. Generally, the more 'corporate' a business is, the more likely they are to expect some of these certifications. Also, for IT driven companies, they often pride themselves in being able to brag about the percentage of their employees that have certain certifications. They view it as a selling point to potential customers. So here is my advice. Search for jobs. Read the descriptions. When you find jobs that pique your interest, take note of the requirements for that job and start building your skill set towards it. Do not waste your time of certs that will not get you closer to the job you are seeking. Contrary to what you want to believe, having 10 irrelevant entry level certifications isn't going to WoW anyone conducting an interview. Wow them with what you have learned, not what you have earned. Too many people start a quest to get certifications so they can out e-mail/business card signature someone else. Don't be that person. Finally, I might suggest considering some of the certification based 'degrees' ***IF*** you have the money and you have absolutely no interest in college. Colleges really don't have any decent coursework that prepares students for technical jobs outside of programming. I have know people going through university based "cyber' degrees, and they are, to me, a gigantic waste of time and money. You would probably do better investing that money in education from classes from SANS or similar lab-centric training that are constantly updating their content. I know I didn't directly answer your questions. You are asking the wrong questions :) You should be asking yourself if you find anything under Cyber interesting enough to invest 4+ hours a day studying and practicing. TL;DR Fairly marketable for entry level jobs. Of course it is going to be challenging, if its all new to you. Find something you can enjoy learning, and it will be a blast.
@typedeaf
@typedeaf 5 жыл бұрын
Miguel, Cyber is in high demand. Like I said previously, the first Cyber team to be formed is generally compliance, which is often times grouped under 'Information Assurance'. As companies become more cyber aware, they are coming to the conclusion that they need to be in compliance with certain cyber standards/regulations/guidelines. To get that compliance, there is generally a team formed that runs the project of auditing compliance --IA or corporate security. Businesses that are slightly more tech savvy will often form Red/Blue teams next. Blue is cyber defense, and Red is cyber offense. Red and Blue work together to validate the security posture through continually attempting to exploit weaknesses, and validating that there is adequate defense is in place . Red/Blue isn't often used as the job title, its just more a logical breakdown. Often times, the Blue team is just a responsibility of the admins, and the Red team is the role of "IT security", which is different than 'corporate security". And sometimes Red/Blue is the responsibly of one team, and then coined, "Purple". Regardless, these types of roles are becoming more and more common as businesses rely more and more on IT as the core of the business, and not just something that gets them internet access and email. I do not foresee the demand shrinking any time soon, but I do see the supply ramping up as more and more technical colleges and universities offer 'cyber' degrees. So, expect the pay scale to diminish in the long run.

How do you start your career in Cybersecurity? Be a college student and complete Internships, internships, and more internships. Internships are literally the most successful way to get your foot in the door. If you’re not a college student or haven’t done an internship, then you better know someone with connections. Its already hard to get your foot in the door doing general IT stuff but Cybersecurity would be much harder since it’s a IT specialty requiring years of experience typically. But like I said, an internship could help you get around that experience hurdle from what I’ve seen.

Join the military if you want to work in Cyber Security. The department of Defense if gobbling up all the jobs and giving them to Raytheon, General Dynamics, Booz Allen Hamilton and other contracting companies that operate in compliance with DoD Mandates such as DoD-8750. These require TS/SCI security clearance in conjunction with certification and varying levels of experience/training.

Karl Kvalvik how do I go specifically go into that when joining the military? What do I do?
@DaKloneLiving
@DaKloneLiving 5 жыл бұрын
@@pvtryan785 Unfortunately, we all need to blaze our own trail, but I do have some information that will help you make those strategic career decisions. --- In 2002, I graduated from Vatterott, a vocational college, with an Associate Degree in Information Systems and Networking Technology; this successfully kick started an 11-year IT career and I don't regret it. Vatterott College's diploma program consisted of 6 classes: Basic & Advanced - Hardware, Software, and Networking. In addition, the degree program added three specialty classes - Server administration, Cisco CCNA, and Business Communication. A vocational education helps you to know the specifics of your field by the time you graduate. Vocational Colleges are Nationally accredited, vs the regional accreditation of community and graduate colleges. (Regional & National accreditation do not mix) I discovered this difference in college accreditation only after I obtained my second associates degree from a community college; I was hoping to put my vocational degree and community college degree together for that 4 year degree required for most upper range federal positions. With two associate degrees and 11 years of IT professional experience, my dream of joining an an agency, such as the FBI, was scrapped. There is no way I was going back to college for two more years. Certification was now my only option now. --- As a civilian looking to expand his IT career into what the department of defense classifies as the "Cybersecurity Workforce", I passed the CompTIA Security+(SY0-501) exam this year. It was only then that I discovered a (TS/SCI) security clearance was preventing my qualification. When I set out to acquire the "IAT II level certification", the baseline certification mandated by *DoD 8570*, it was in an effort to make myself valuable enough to be considered for a complex and expensive hiring process, which I believed to include a background check and security clearance. While in conversation with a General Dynamics recruiter earlier this year, I asked: "How are qualified civilian professionals expected to posses an in scope TS/SCI security clearance prior to application?" In Summary, this was his answer: 1) Obtaining a (TS/SCI), Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information, is not something that one can request, nor offer to pay for. 2) TS/SCI job positions require a “live billet” which person is designated to fill. If a billet is designated to an individual, it remains open till a person is qualified to start - in this case, assuming all other qualifications are met, it would require TS/SCI clearance BEFORE you could “start” in position. 3) The average time to get a TS/SCI is over 500 days. That is the conundrum, we can’t tell a customer we will have a person start in approximately 500 days - they would promptly strip the billet from our company and award to another company - they want position filled within 30 days or less. --- I understand that some things should not be rushed, and granting individuals access to (TS/SCI) information without a thorough and complete vetting is one of them. But the federal government has not devoted sufficient resources to make sure that such vetting occurs for civilians within a reasonable amount of time. Until security clearance reforms are effectively in place, it seems the only way to advance in Federal Information Security or Cyber Security roles, like I stated, is to join the military. I am sure if you talked to military recruiters they could help you steer your career into IT; You will need to think of you IT security career in terms of a 10year time investment. The Israel Military runs their country's cyber security, and between the $10b JEDI contract and the countless billions currently being spent on Cyber Security by the Department of Defense; the civilian workforce will not be long trusted at the cutting edge level of Information Security.

nathan mckenzie Risk acceptance, risk transfer, risk mitigation are the things specifically I was referring. Every company’s risk tolerance level is different. CyberSecurity assists in defining this from a technological standpoint since there are other types of risk that are outside the scope of cyberSecurity. Penetration testing is a very small niche of CyberSecurity. Granted one of the most interesting niches.

I used to think about that kind of stuff when I was a security guard. Like I would look at the covers over the hinges on the mantrap portals and just nod approvingly when I did my walk, because if I wanted to break through a mantrap, I would remove the hingies and pull the door away. Or I would look at double doors and think: If I pulled them both, I could defeat the lock. Or "If I had a guard badge and scanned here and there, I could bypass the biometric system entirely".

There are a lot of great ways for you I would say, in terms of compliance. There are many certifications such as CASP, CISSP etc... You can take a course on ISO 27001-2 also look into NIST compliances. You would need a good understanding of the industry, if anything start with Comptia Certification. A+,N+,S+. These will give you a very good fundamental in hardware, network engineering, and security. This is Just my 2 cents.

I work in the field. The main thing is simply learning the skills. Find out which arena you want to focus on, say Engineering, Analysis, Pen testing, or Management. Then go for it. If your into engineering you’ll focus on software Development so your likely going to need a CS degree and perhaps a generic defense cert like Security+. As for becoming an Analysts you will mostly use HIPS Software to monitor and enforce network policies. You’ll need some Sysadmin Certs as like MCSA/CCNA and some Security certs like Sec+/CEH/CySA+ but a degree is not required as much. Pen Testing which is what everybody envisions when they hear about hacking are usually a bit more experienced/skill based. They require higher level certs like GPEN or OSCP, but you maybe able to get in the door with a Sec+ or CEH. A CS degree maybe required but it’s subjective. Lastly if you want to be a Manager which is where I think a Business degree would shine look at the CASP/CISM/CISSP. You won’t really be as involved in the technical side, but you’ll manage the individuals that do as well as their equipment. Unfortunately if you want to get into management your gonna likely need to start as one of the other three positions.

I know C and use linux everyday, i love reverse engineering, writing apps for microcontrollers, and finding exploits. What i wish i could do one is day, is to be able to write my own malware without a framework. I prefer programming over networking. Having said all this im from a third world country where cyber security is even newer than in USA so there aren't many jobs in the field and i have yet to find a job in security that fits me :D. Im guessing what i like are IOT security, operating system exploitation and Anti malware software development but it fita no actual job(in my country when i search online moat security jobs are SOC and a few pen testing jobs for web apps and android apps) I prefer lower level languages like cpp c and assembly over python java c# and i prefer staying close to the hardware but not as low level as electronic engineering

I am a cybersecurity postgraduate student and I have a concern that I believe many students like me that want to go into the cybersecurity industry have and is that we really want to go into the field but everybody needs work experience and the thing is so how are you going to start with only your degree experience. What I like to conclude is that there is so huge demand but at the same time despite the fact that we want to go into the field it's too difficult for us and there an irony in that

Man, I just got offered a job making 38k and I make 55k now doing work I don't like nor feel appreciated doing. I want a serious career change and have always been interested in tech but never pursued it seriously. My background in IT is limited professionally. The most IT thing I've done is learn how to dual boot my outdated MAC so I can run different Linux distros. Cyber security sounds cool to me but I'm really unsure overall. I'm in the process of trying to build my own curriculum on udemy but I really don't know what I want to do in IT. I also want to get my CAPM because I am interested in project management but only kinda do it for work so I can't really claim I have that experience. Some things I have in the queue are: Network+, Linux PDC, CompTIA A+, Ethical Hacking, Kali Linux, CISSP, CCNA. But after I watched a few of your videos and read the comments I think I'm approaching this all wrong. Any advice is appreciated.

Don't chase certs unless someone else is paying and you can do it on the company clock. It may seem cool when people throw out all the certs they have, but *most* certs coursework only cover beginner level material; and definitely all those you listed. Having a dozen beginner level certs is not going to impress anyone that has some real work experience. There are many companies that actually encourage and pay for their employees to go get certs, because... it makes their company look good. Don't get me wrong, if there were more courses well designed around more advanced material, I would be all for it. For example, Cisco or AWS certs actually do ramp up in skill. So remember that most certs are there to validate a minimal level of understanding, not a mastery of anything. IE. They are designed to differentiate/filter entry level applicants from each other. Finally, don't lie to yourself. One reason no one takes certs seriously is because of how readily available test dumps are available. If the exam is all multiple choice, then having the cert will mean very little because of all the cheaters that also have gotten it by memorizing brain dumps. What you should do is find out exactly what you want to do, and then pursue learning the skills required to do the job. Once you are confident that you have the skills, then look at any certifications that you may need to meet a job qualification requirement. So, go read stuff online, watch youtube videos, buy books and/or take online courses from Coursera and similar to cover all the introductory stuff. Learn computer hardware and networking basics. Use VM's to install Linux and go through something like Linux From Scratch. Finally, learn some automation programming language like powershell (windows), bash (linux), or python (general). When you have those bases covered, its time to focus on more specific skills related to what you want to do.

Just stumbled across this video and channel. Subscribed! I’m completing my Masters in Information Systems with a focus track in cybersecurity. I don’t currently work in the field but work in HR. Not really what I expected after completing my undergraduate so 3 yrs later I’m pursuing a career transition into cybersecurity. I don’t hold any certifications currently but have researched the Security+ cert. online it was recommended to complete the Network+ cert first as a building block. Would you recommend this step? Or what other entry level certs do you find more prevalent in the field? Any and all constructive advice is welcomed! Thanks in advance!

Whats best for a newbie with some very basic WordPress skills (don't laugh too hard), apart from web development. Was thinking Cyber Security or Software Development - I think software dev is more complex am I right? Btw I'm just average at math but good at coming up with ideas if that helps haha! Currently, have a course opportunity for Cyber Security that guarantees a job at the end of it or money back by starting out in IT in a more general role then after 2 years move you to a Cyber Security role once more tests are passed/experienced gained (not a shady company it's legit). Or I do a course in software/app development that is recognized but no job guarantee..

Currently working at a call center for an internet payments company which is what got me interested half of my job is educating people on anti phishing/ internet safety best practices. Also I hear some horrible ID theft stories everyday and the things people have to go through after it happens so I figured why not help prevent hacking altogether. So at the moment I'm pausing self teaching myself web development and going for my network +, Sec +, and CEHi wish to become a pen tester but my goal is to become an Offensive Security Certified Professional. Although I'm not gonna lie, I do feel nervous about getting into all this because I cant afford to get a college degree. Should I still pursue this? While I'm passionate I try to be realistic with myself. I dont want to waste my time if no degree is a deal breaker.
