How do ZORA AND RITO Both Exist in Tears of the Kingdom?

Crazy how Hyrule isn't the only place in the world, I hope we get a Zelda game that explores more Kingdoms/Places around the world!

A weird thing between the rito and zora is that it is pretty well known across the Zelda community that the zora have some of the longest lifespans of any Zelda race but I am pretty sure that rito have some of the shortest

Might be becuase in botw and totk massive AIRSHIPS sieged rito village, but in zoras domain theres this elephant that tries to flood the already flooded town and in totk some brown stuff is coming from the sky

Repopulation. Species that need to populate quickly trade off by having shorter lifespans. While creatures with long lifespans reproduce much slower. Clearly, as a result of having to swiftly adapt, the Rito had to speed up their birth cycle, reducing their lifespans.

​@@AZDfoxit all still takes ages because the reduction of life span isn't directly linked to reproduction. Life steadily shortens just because there is no evolutionary need for living longer - children are already born, genetic information transferred, so the genetic mutations which are causing an organism to live less are slowly piling up. Considering it took roughly a few hundred years for Rito to evolve into what they are through the help of a god, it makes little to no sense for him to implement this change. Why would you steal decades of every live of those who came for your help? I think, Rito and Zora aren't related to begin with. They are still compatible to each other genetically like Zonai and Hylians, so Medli really is an offspring of the sage of Water in Wind Waker, but not the entire race. My theory is that Zora just left the Great Sea, being a fresh water species and all, and Rito, who always lived in the mountains, but rarely came in contact with Hylians, took their place. That's when the Sage of Water had a child with a Rito man, who later had their own child, until there were little to no resemblance to Zora in Medli.

Well, a Zora monument details a different Zora tribe settling in a different land, a species can evolve without going extinct, the Rito in TotK are completely biologically and culturally different from those in Wind waker, and if you support the Timeline merge theory then that works as well.

I was thinking that too. There was a What If scenario where if Link woke up too late. Zelda would lose the fight against Calamity Ganon and die, King Roam's spirit wouldn't be able to hang around due to all the monsters, and when Link wakes up he won't be able to do the necessary quests to fight CG and get killed trying. Highly doubt the Yiga would servive either since the Divine Beasts would be on a bloody rampage 24/7.

Also, the kingdom of New Hyrule in Spirit Tracks is a new continent.

That's actually an interesting possibility, especially since loftwings are from chronologically the first game in the timeline and coexisted so closely with people, yet they're just mysteriously absent from every other game. It's kind of like if you went millions of years into our future and no one had any idea what a "dog" was, but there are these distinctly canine-like people just walking around like it's normal. I think your brain would probably connect the dots pretty quickly.

Yeah! In my head "Rito" is a word in hylian that means "bird" or "bird people" or "winged man" or something along those lines. It is a word that would naturally be attributed to a race of bird people perhaps as an adopted exonym or even come up with by the rito themselves. I don't remember if Rito speak hylian or their own language but judging by the gazette and stuff it's safe to assume they are at least bilingual, if not hylian as their main language.

I've been staring at the mountain ranges beyond the map for what seemed like an hour just trying to comprehend what outside of Hyrule would feel like. Even with everything empty from the beyond, it looks so astonishing. Perhaps the third game should explore other countries/continents imo, then again it would probably take too long to make up another unique country.

I know dlc hasn’t been confirmed but Nintendo has been adding dlc to like every major franchise do here I go. I think if there’s dlc it’s got to be exploring outside of hyrule. In breath of the wild, the world felt lonely. It just felt like way only you and a few towns doing there best to survive and move forward. In totk though, we’ve been hearing so much about distant lands. Yona is from a different domain somewhere outside of hyrule and kass is exploring outside of hyrule. Kass was a major character in the botw dlc and his suspicious disappearance in totk makes me believe that he’s going to come back to the game in the dlc. If you look at a zoom out of the map outside of hyrule are some interesting landmasses. Above hebra is a interesting looking body of water. The devs have also updated the land which we can see above the cliffs on the left and top side of the map as well. There are mountains and more detail which you can see. Although it could be so you don’t see the edge of the map on the sky islands. I just think it’s interesting that we believed that we were all alone and now we are finding out about distant civilisation and an important character from botw has gone sightseeing in these far away lands.

the most interesting theory ive seen about this is that the world has gone through something akin to a dragon break from the elder scrolls series. a dragon break is a phenomenon in which time seemingly breaks, and attempts to fix itself, usually occuring around massive, world changing events ie zelda sending link back in time in oot for tloz or mannimarco being killed or not in daggerfall for tes, causing a split in the timeline, which when the dragon break ends, makes all possible outcomes of that event transipre at once, making a new shared history. when zelda was sent back in time in totk, it caused the dragon break to end, causing the three timelines to collapse on each other and make a new world where all events in past timelines all occured.

It's because the timelines all merged into one, with a remade history that we don't know. We only know what the separate timelines are like, but for the people living within the story, they have a history that's a jumbled up mix of the events of all three timelines. It's called a Dragonbreak timeline, (I forget what game the term comes from), where all paths toward the same outcome become true at the same time

My official guess is that zoras basically split in 2 in wind waker. The ones that evolved into rito to traverse the sky or the zora that instead of going to the sky went deeper down and evolved more fish/shark like features. Then when the water started draining the zora swam to zoras domain and the rito converged to hebra

To me both Totk and Botw follow the wind waker timeline. Centuries after everybody left in every direction to find new land. Some of them founded the spirit tracks kingdom while others did other things and somewhere there either where zora or the rito evolved again. Eventually the flooded hyrule reemerged and was resettled from all of these new kingdoms, allowing both rito and zora to exist. In Botw and Totk, Hyrule is surrounded by a huge trench and cliffs, except for in the south and the east. For me those cliffs represent the sinking of Hyrule in windwaker but eventually part of that crumbled and the area was drained

Remember these games take so far into the future that all the past games' history are all blended into mere myth and legend told in the past. The three timeline split merged into one to the point of stuff from all three timelines are all together. So there's no reason why they couldn't exist together now, and perhaps the BotW Rito came into being via another origin story. After all, many creatures evolve into crab-shaped bodies, despite not being actual crabs.

I have a couple theories. My best is that the botw and totk games take place so far out of the timelines that they all converge into botw and totks timeline. Another one is that because they take place so far past the other games they’re all destined to have the same result.

I like to think that in ancient times way before the kingdoms founding a group of zora for some reason or another travelled to the lake in tabantha where the rito live on the rock spikes, but it was too cold and mountainous so they evolved feathers for warmth and eventually flight

Since the games rarely explore other lands, it's easy to forget. There is however one serious problem with this theory (aside from the assumption of which timeline these games take place in), and that is that in the WW timeline the gods flooded all of Hyrule to the point that only the mountain tops were left to form islands. If the oceans rise on such a monumental level, it doesn't matter what continent you're on, everything is under water (unless your entire continent is so far above sea level as to effectively be built on mountains in the first place, which is not something we've seen in the real universe). I'm sure there are ways around that, but they seem implausible as well, like assuming that the planet Hyrule is on just doesn't have any oceans and Hyrule is effectively settled on what would have been the ocean floor. Not impossible, but highly improbable, especially since we almost always see a coastline in Zelda games with some sort of ocean or "great sea" beyond it.

I’d think it’s more of a “Paradox” situation. After traversing through time for centuries, millennia or even eons, eventually the timelines started to “bleed” into each other. One day thousands of years ago, either the Zora, Rito OR Both just suddenly appeared. Maybe they appeared in a timeline where only the Gorons, Gerudo. Sheikah and Hylians existed, maybe the Rito from the “Wind Waker” from some time later in said timeline are magically transported the “Death Mountain” into the BotW timeline some millennia before the “Imprisoning War” and in BOTH their shock, not realizing what had happened, waking up to unfamiliar “Hairy Rock trolls” twice their body/muscle mass in “their” houses, and vice vversa for the Gorons, and the Zora from some OTHER timeline are transported to the Gerudo/Hylian/Sheikah borders, somewhere in the swamp/wetlands near Lurelin village or the where the Lakeside Stable would be, they all warred with each other for some time, and eventually made a peace treaty, and by the time BotW comes around, them being there is just “normal”, and like the “Age of Calamity” or “Imprisoning War” in TotK, the just forgot over time. In age of Calamity, the Sages of BotW traveled back to help fight, and Heros or Not, meddling with time has consequences on the space time continuum.

Also they both look different than the Zora and Rito from any of the timelines especially the Rito who looked like humans and birds mixed together in wind waker.

In irl evolution not all the families of a species evolve at the same time, leaving room for the existance of both. And Another thing is that the Zora seen in Ocarina look more like fresh water fish while in TotK they look more like salt water fish and sharks, showing us 2 different kinds of Zora.

Many great Calamities have passed. Not just the two we know of. Perhaps 100k years have passed since the last game before the breath of the wild era. And that's less time it took for the Rito to become a thing in the Windwaker timeline. But them not being from Hyrule originally makes sense as well

It’s also possible for branch evolution to be a factor. Keep in mind, the water in the Rito territory is far too cold for Zora so maybe some that ended up there by accident and over time they evolved in to Rito. This would also explain why these Rito have heavier feathers than those of the Great Sea.

it's just hilarious how in wind waker, the zora have basically expanded their territory by a grand margin and evolution was like: "My fish spawns, by way of the path forward through time and great spread of habitable locations, I will gift you with flight *AND NO WHERE TO LAND.* You will thank me later."

My understanding was that Nintendo's original explaination was that the Zora evolved due to a lack of freshwater and could not survive in the ocean, so they eventually became the Rito. But given that Zora's Domain in BotW/TotK is inland and seems like its freshwater, if the Zora we see initially came from somewhere else, they would have to travel via the ocean, thus being saltwater Zora that can live in freshwater environments?
