I have always enjoyed Queens music, and I think that when they sing, their voices blend well together, they compliment each other. Freddie had an awesome, powerful voice and no matter what he sang or how he sang it, he sounded great! To me, using pitch corrector or autotune to perfect a voice, it only takes away the feelings and emotions of the singer natural voice. I'd rather hear songs with their natural voice, flaws and all. That’s true, but you have to actively search for Mercury’s raw, live vocals. Most people have simply never heard those vocals. The official releases of their live concerts are how a majority of the fans (and listeners in general) hear them and virtually every song has _multiple_ corrections, analogue and digital, that alter the music they actually played. Chienwonder2’s channel has spent months making videos in painstakingly detail of how official releases have used different tools to remove mistakes, wrong notes or vocal problems. Check this 55-minute analysis of all the differences between the releases of the popular Montreal concert: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXm7koSojLqbm8U Look at how many reaction videos there are of “Somebody to Love” in its HD restoration. It’s flawless! But that’s simply not the music the audience heard live at those concerts. Like all bands and vocalists, there are many mistakes. Not just in the vocals, but in the playing, too. And that is what people think of when they say that they sounded perfect live. Most people have no clue that there are thousands of alterations throughout the live concert albums and videos. If would rather hear Queen raw and natural, videos like Chienwonder2’s demonstrate how much time and effort that would take. I bet that most of the singing you praise as perfect has been corrected to sound that way.

The fact is that in his live performances, his voice would be noticeably off pitch; he’d sing the wrong note; his voice would crack and strain; he would make mistakes on the piano. All the musicians would make mistakes live in every song. _They did not want you to hear them._ And that’s all there is to it. And this is norm, it has always been the norm.

I've often thought the same. (that & his slight lisp). He had to pronounce crisply & cleanly in order to deliver and man, did he deliver! Freddie has the most beautiful pronunciation ever. I never knew how pervasive auto tuning was in music until I found your channel. What a bizarre thing to consider doing to Freddie Mercury when he sounds like this already. But this is the problem today, a lot of people don't really care, it seems. It is similar to the over-photoshopping in photography now, people will go nuts over a "photo" that someone says they took, which is obviously fake, but people don't care or even seem to know sometimes. They'll just say "Wow, that's amazing that you got that sunset shot with both a rainbow and a lightning bolt in it! How cool!" And it changes people's expectations for what they see, in the way that autotune has changed people's expectations for what they hear, so it becomes harder and harder not to do that. Unfortunately, I think we have become so used to consuming manufactured media that we have lost our appreciation for what is real. As always, thanks for the great analysis, Fil!

Yes, I feel old. I remember Bohemian Rhapsody, from 1975. Great song. Queen are like a cross between The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. I've heard that the Procol Harum song, Whaling Stories, which they also did a live version with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, in 1971, had influenced Bohemian Rhapsody. On the Procol Harum live album with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Da Camera Singers are the choir that they use with the performance. I hope you have a Merry Christmas. Love all the little details that you point out that we can over look at times when we get caught up into the song or performance. I've said this before if the music industry gave us a choice and labeled it as the "original recording as recorded" or this has been "auto-tune and or pitch corrected". then we the buyer can decide which format we prefer to own. just like back in the late 1950's and 60's we had a choice between mono recording or stereo recording. Great analysis. I believe from the early days up to and including the Innuendo album, Freddie would only record his final vocal once everything else had been put down and roughly mixed. He would then do 3 takes of the lead vocal and either use the best take or piece together the best of each. A great example is his solo track 'In My Defence', Dave Clark states that the entire vocal is the very first take as he couldnt better it. You can hear his voice fatigue during the 2nd chorus and he then pulls it back for the final chorus after he's been able to rest for 30secs during the guitar solo. Brilliant!

What a treat Fil to hear Freddie Mercury's voice...his natural voice. He was such and amazing singer song written who entertain like no one else. When he goes into chest voice you can really hear his anguish. Auto tune will just destroy that. Queen was the first band I really paid attention to. I don't know how many times I listened to thier greatest hits on cassette. I even had dances for most of the songs. You did an awesome job at explaining why his voice was doing what it was doing. Interesting that you say when people used tape and sped it up to raise a singer’s pitch so it would be more in tune, they were still working with the actual voice, while with pitch correction it’s more of an artificial adjustment. But how is that different than slightly dragging up a group of notes in Melodyne then tweaking the formants (which would actually compensate for the correction and make it less “chipmunk-like” then the tape example?)

Hi, Fil, love your videos. I'm old and had the experience of recording in a 16 track studio w/2 inch tape in the early eighties. You mentioned people wondering about manipulating vocal pitch by adjusting tape speed. Adjusting tape speed would change the pitch of ALL of the instrumentation, in addition to the vocal. So it was not possible to adjust vocal pitch RELATIVE to the instruments. The only thing you could do to correct a bad note was to re-sing it, hopefully with a silent punch-in. I saw your video showing Freddie having been pitch corrected. It was amazing how much of the uniqueness of Freddie's voice was lost as a result!

Fantastic, Fil. As always. Thank you. I’m excited to show this to my 17-yr old that just started voice lessons. I am the biggest Queen fan ever. But it irritates me to no end when people use hyperbole for Freddie. His voice wasn’t perfect (and his vocal range wasn’t any wider than a dozen other rock singers). His performances as a whole were perfect. Exaggerating takes away from how good he naturally was. Once you exaggerate by saying something easily disproven (with your pitch graphics) you’ve now cast doubt on any other praise given. Freddie was amazing. Not perfect, amazing. A real voice that, with its passion and flaws, is better than a large percentage of the population. That’s what draws your ear to it.

An interesting and entertaining look at Freddie's voice. I wonder whether any record company has used a 100% synthetic voice on a released song. It would not surprise me in the least as they would not have to pay anything to the artist including royalties, they could keep the lot. With regards to the gap between Feddie’s falsetto and head voice - check out the isolated vocal for Under Pressure, where Mercury does an extremely impressive ‘slide up’ right through (what I believe is) head voice and falsetto. I’m sure you know where I mean, right after ’slashed and torn’ but before the heavier, rockier ‘Why can’t we give love’ section.

For me the biggest difference between speeding up (or slowing) tracks on tape versus pitch correction is what they did back in the day did noy change the INTERVALS between notes, thus maintaining the original feel and expression. What they do now DOES change the intervals and it basically kills the singer's original delivery.

I don't know why I don't like to hear a voice auto tuned or pitch corrected but I do love certain Remastered songs.For example the Beatles remastered songs sound as if the instruments are being brought forth but the vocals are still in tact ( their original way ) Is it a matter of who is doing the remastering and the quality of the equipment ?It could also be that I am listening. on a better sound system than a scratchy record like back in the day There are so many factors .Could you do an Analysis of this perhaps at some point? Always love these vocal analysis posts Fil; great stuff. I downloaded the free VocalPitch-Monitor just for fun. Wow, it is great fun!🤟 Turns out I can hold a lowish E2 and a highish D5; who knew! Everything else in between is a complete tonal car crash, but hey - I can at least hold two notes!🤟😁🤟 It’s great to be able to see where the vocalist (in this case Freddie) is singing and then trying to match it. It really surprised me, you can actually see how bad/good you are… and SEE how you can IMPROVE. What a great Christmas ‘thing’ to try out with your mates and family🎄. Hey Fil, I just wrote the company behind Melodyne, and wanted to share this with you, since you encouraged me to also do some sort of "lobbyism" against this "madness" as you do it with your videos. Here is what I wrote to them: Dear Celemony people! I'm a big fan of music, both acoustic and electronic, analogue and digital, and I also find the new possibilities of digital post-processing very exciting. As you probably know, the use of your Melodyne product has become very widespread, and I would like to make a few suggestions. I think that Melodyne is often used to an exaggerated extent, which sometimes annoys me a bit when even vocalists who are actually very good without correction are being adjusted to some grid. But instead of demonizing all pitch correcting software, I would like to give you a suggestion as to how your app can even contribute to further musical education, and that would actually be a matter close to my heart: Please add a few alternative grids to the traditional grid of 12 tone equal temperament (12tet, 12edo) that will make people (e.g. younger music producers) understand that 12tet is not "right" in the absolute sense, but only one of several possible maps for guidance. So there should also be the possibility of providing a grid for the natural overtone series and its octaves for a freely definable frequency X, the so-called just intonation (JI), then there should definitely also be grids that have drawn in quarter tones, for example at the point of the Blue note of the blues or in the places that are typical for oriental scales. The subdivision into xenharmonic scales that are popular in the microtonal music community, such as 17edo, 19edo or the Bohlen-Pierce scale would also be conceivable. I think at least some adjustment to a wider perspective on pitch would be really important. Your software had a great influence on the development of the music industry, I think you also have a certain pedagogical mission (A/N: actually I meant responsibility) to show or remind people that the grid of a tempered 12-tone tuning is not in the absolute sense that is the only right one, but one of many possibilities. It seems like the popularity of applying this grid to any vocal tracks is now limiting human expression in terms of emotion and harmonic variability. And I think that instead of getting upset about it, I thought I'd rather suggest how even an app like Melodyne in particular can convey a somewhat broader understanding of music by offering more alternative tuning-grids. I'm not a programmer, but looking at all the different presets of other programs, I don't think it would take up too much programming effort or additional data capacity. For the users, on the other hand, it would certainly be exciting to look at their own singing through several "lenses", and certainly also a relief to recognize that not every quarter tone, generally not every deviation from tempered temperament, is automatically always wrong. Some might feel challenged by the challenge of singing a melody in 17edo, for example (some singers can do stuff like that) or by trying Arabic or Indian music and having some orientation. I would like to ask you to suggest this to the whole team, because I only see added value with comparatively little effort, really. It certainly won't get the Bohlen-Pierce scale into the top charts, but that's not the point. I think, in the end it would just expand the scope for what actually sounds good, fresh and exciting. I take ‘inaccurate’ expression anytime, as a simple listener, not being a musician I just enjoy the feeling and expression of the artist. In Freddie’s case no correction desired. That’s probably the reason I found the release of the latest song a bit off.

I’d love for you to compare Freddie’s early voice-White Queen is Devine-to his later voice. He admitted he abused his voice & never had those nodules removed. Also an analysis of Justin Hayward’s voice would be wonderful. Justin has remastered several Moodies albums, which I refuse to listen to-vinyl rules, and I’m wondering if he auto tuned his voice. If he did he’s a fool. Why mess with one of the greatest voices of all time?!

You shouldn´t change Freddie´s voice, the music it´s organic and not perfect and that´s the way should be. He was one of a kind and is singing was perfect as it was, he was able to express and give meaning to his songs.
