Loved the video! I'm looking at my pile of 2x2s right now and a lot of them are different from what you showed (and also different from each other) but I've definitely seen the ball core mechanism in 2x2s before. A common mechanism used today is where it's essentially a 3x3 cube but the edge pieces are TINY and hidden underneath the corner pieces, so you can only see the corners. I think it makes the cube more stable for speedsolving, although I'm not sure of the reason exactly.

As a speedcuber myself, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It's an amazing and high quality animation to give people a good perspective on how a 2x2 Rubik's brand cube would work. Perhaps one day you'll be able to make one of these on a 1x1, I'm sure you're aware of its complexity and advanced structure; however, it is something very hard to understand on a human level. Amazing job as always Jared, I recommend you all sub with that notif bell on if u know what I'm sayin'

actually this mechanism is an old 2x2. A modern 2x2 is like a 3x3 mechanism and have hidden edge pieces. The hidden edge pieces are tabs which holds the corners. Oh yeah, there is also a center but it is under the whole structure Edit: I just realised jperm posted the comment...

The ball core mechanism is used for the Rubik’s brand 2x2 but most speedcubes use internal edges that make it just a 3x3 on the inside.

fun fact: most 2x2 speedcubes are actually 3x3s but with corner and middle parts hidden inside because the 2x2 mechanism shown in this video gives no "wiggle room" what i mean by wiggle room is slight missalignments in the parts when solving it fast, thats why speedcubes have curved inside corners
