This is actually Part 30 of the Emergency Storage Shed Clean-out Series!
Here's a detailed inspection and analysis of a 14.5 horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine which was for sale at a garage sale years ago for "parts only". Let's pull it down, see what actually happened and assess what value we can get for the parts on ebay!

I have the same 14.5 HP motor on a riding mower that I purchased from Montgomery Ward in 1995. After using it for about a year I noticed oil leaking around the bottom of the motor from the crankcase and I tightened the bolts that I could get at with the motor still on the mower and that stopped the leak. I guess that's why someone would put lock tight on those bolts. My 29 year old mower is still working with the same motor.

Yep, it's quite possible they work loose from new. I'm sure manufacturers don't use Loctite on these originally. Thanks for watching Charles 😊

I know you had a previous life running a small-motor repair shop, and it shows! Your level of expertise is so vast. My favorite intimate piece of knowledge that you shared in this video about your meticulous overview of the engine overhaul was that “It’s not good because it has a big hole in it.” Fascinating! And since you asked, yes, more cursing and fighting please! Go Chris Go!

Oh, boy, Chris, what a fascinating video! I really enjoy seeing repair, maintenance, and operation of small engines, especially when presented by an expert such as yourself who knows the subject inside and out. Maybe the previous owner was planning to repair the sump with JB Weld but got distracted and decided to sell the unit (ha!). I could be wrong, because this is way outside of my wheelhouse, but I think you will realize a sufficient profit on this effort to make it worth your while. P.S.: I was watching some of your old videos recently and recognized this engine from the brief tour you gave us of the storage container in your previous yard. Thank you again for the wonderful content.

Many thanks Elaine, always appreciate your comments! 😊👍 You know I have about 550 videos now and only a small handful about small engines which is strange as I'm much more comfortable around mechanical things than electronics! I guess it's because I enjoy the sharp learning curve of something new - but I probably should do more small engine work as I have plenty to do!

The new vocabulary I just learned was already way worth the effort! :) Sure hope that all/most parts find a new home. We have an ashtray that actually is a repurposed "piston cap" (if that's the right name for it?). A weird novelty item that proves that some parts may find a totally different use. Looking forward to your follow up. Thanks for sharing how to dismantle this little monster. Really shows that you know your way around them. Impressive.

As a fan of the I Do Cars channel I was expecting more carnage given the inspection port in the block. Looks like it was well worth stripping down. I would have just removed the outer parts and put the rest in the irony ally expecting everything to be damaged inside.

Usually these things have a handful of cast aluminium bits which used to be a conrod, and sometimes even a bend cam as well as badly scored crank journals. I was almost a little disappointed not to be able to show you guys carnage! Thanks Steve 👍

That was a fun dismantling. Very lucky that all those parts are still useable. It will be interesting to see how good it does on eBay, and should be better than irony ally value, I only get $0.40/Kg here. 👍

Interesting video Chris. My local scrap yard only pay $0.20 a kg for irony Ally. The guy should have used blue Loctite not red. Mayb he JB welded the hole or used something else and fell off? I think U will do right with eBay, but might take some time waiting. Cheers Graham.

It looks like everything is reusable except the rings and the hole in the block. I would seriously consider tig welding the hole and put it back together. Hone the sleeve and new rings. I bet you could get it running again!

i picked up a 5hp ish electric start engine half torn down missing a lot of bolt on accessories, i was going to list it as suit parts for $10, but i'll check now what the charging coil/starter is worth on ebay (i dont know for sure what engine it is either though at this stage, haven't touched it other than ratting some screws off it for other mowers)
@TheUltimateRecycler

The starter motors used to sell very well as they were always an expensive spare part. These days with cheap Chinese replacement parts, the secondhand market isn't as good - but still worth investigating! Thanks Dean 👍

I rebuilt my first 5hp briggs in middle school for my go kart. I wonder if it got dropped after being repaired or the lawn mower crashed into something. I would say 200.00 or more worth of parts. To bad you don't weld you could fill the hole and reassemble. I think that engine is over 400.00 on ebay.
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler 9 ай бұрын
Thanks Matthew. The impact was definitely from the inside - so there was a catastrophic failure at some stage! Yeah the block could have been welded I guess - but the effort to repair it (and there were a few other problems) wasn't worth it in my opinion. Besides, I don't need a ride-on engine so then I'd have to try and sell it! I'm Curious to see how the parts go..

Does the starter pinion break, or jam? Maybe there's some damage to the ring gear on the flywheel? Or perhaps the starter housing is damaged and the pinion isn't engaging properly..
