How does a Hydrostatic pump work?

The tolerances in a hydrostatic motor are so small and impressive, but how does it actually work? Why does my transmission oil matter?

Be more amazed. This style pump has been around a long time. Ford, for instance, used this style pump in the early 1950s on tractors. I have seen even older versions of this used in industrial applications.

I taught hydraulics in a VoTec in Oklahoma for 5 years and loved it. Before I taught worked as a hydraulic technician and put in a few hours in the field working on Sundstrand pumps and motors. Nothing like fluid power. 👍🏻

And those tolerances are why you change your transmission/hydraulic fluid regularly, and with the right fluid for your *specific* machine!

Would have been nice to see the damage and get a general explanation of what caused the damage. I'm assuming low, bad, wrong hydro fluid or water causing Excessive heat, wear or loose metal debris getting stuck. Looked like A LOT of scaring on the one piston without the brass shoe.

Back in 1981 I had an old Cub Cadet hydrostatic 12hp front end loader yard tractor. When cold, it was good, but lost function as it warmed up. I knew nothing about troubleshooting it, and knew it would be expensive if I took it to a shop. 31 years later I bought my BX25 and have accumulated 3237 hours. Love it. But I only learned about HST pump and motor when I bought a hydrostatic drive lawn tractor that did not function. The previous owner had it repaired, but when reassembled, a part was installed incorrectly. I fixed it and use it as my acreage runabout, towing a sweeper and various trailers. Love hydrostatic.

Hydro-drive power units are king for applications such a landscaping. The ability to feather the machine travel speed instantly is much safer than gear drive and loader work is also more efficient. Gear drive has its place though, especially for field work.

Hi Neil, Just purchased a rtv 520 and when shifting in reverse-the vehicle is at a standstill as per instruction-there is this random and intermittent chattering noise coming the transmission. The dealer has been unable to replicate this noise although we have experienced it several times when operating the vehicle. In fact, I was able to catch the sound on my smartphone and send the dealer the audio file. Its been with the dealer for about a month and they are about to send it back with the issue unresolved. I would appreciate your perspective and assistance on this matter.

I'm not sure I can add value here. As a dealer It's hard to fix issues you can't replicate. You've documented it happens, the best thing maybe to wait and see if it gets worse.

Looks expensive. They have play-boards for toddlers that show how gears work, so I guess I’ll stick with my 35 year old gear grinder Ford tractor. I understand it.
