As a woman, I guess the carnality of this question is apparent (and slightly maddening=). Thanks, pastor john for addressing all different questions. Please keep in mind to direct men towards (spiritually beautiful) love for their sisters and mothers. Thanks! He is beautiful savior. amen. X

Brian Zahnd has a great book 'Beauty will save the world' which really brings to light 'beauty' in it's sacred and true essence!

C.S. Lewis has a great chapter on this -- "the fair beauty of the Lord" in his book on the Psalms. I benefitted from reading that entire book, but that chapter definitely stands out. As an aside, I don't think it's helpful to criticize someone for asking an honest question.

I get where the guy who asked the question is coming from. Although if we're talking about the language that guys in the church might find awkward, the word 'beautiful' wouldn't be one I would be worried about. But that's a personal opinion. I agree with John Piper when he emphasizes the fact that the word beautiful can be used to describe alot more than just physical aesthetics. I'm glad he took the question seriously.

Would it work if we substitute another word, like "glorious", or "magnificent"?

I should have thought it was obvious that there are different kinds of beauty, and that the 'beauty' of Christ has nothing to do with sexual attractiveness. Clearly when I call my grandmother, or my daughter beautiful, there is a different implication from when I call my wife beautiful. I don't blame the questioner though; this carnal mindset is the product of a culture which makes beauty entirely about physicality, and love entirely about sexuality.

TL;DR: beutiful = glorious / epic
