This is what we want to be doing here in Kansas City. We are trying to open a facility that is a low cost or no cost creative space for making or collaborating visual and/ or auditory art. Good job Lewitt for promoting this organization.

Great video! Boston born and raised. I do freelance engineering here, while my current recording studio is being built. The different facilities are excellent in build and quality - I just love the vibe of this place. I didn't know that they had Lewitt mics, I usually bring my Neumann U 87, but during my next session there, I'll be sure to request one!

Love the mission and the fact that there is so much cool, quality gear (and people) available. I used to pitch this idea in music business classes in college and even professors (retired musicians/industry people) would tell me it wasn't realistic--inspiring to see people who care about making music creation accessible and community oriented and are making it happen!

This is massive. I have 4000 dollars recording studio I opened in my community. I had wanted it to be free but the operation cost was too much. I was forced to shut it down. I am finding ways to make it more affordable but hiring a producer require cash.

Non profit studio: if the studio earns a lucrative amount of money in a small time it means the money goes back into the business. Regardless how much the studio earns, the staff will be paid a set wage. If Beyonce randomly wants to hire the studio for triple the price then they won't keep the profit. For profit: if a lucrative amount of money is earned then the boss keeps the profit and spends that money on a trip to Dubai. Taken away money from the arts industry and putting it into a different industry. it's not the same because a for profit studio would focus on scaling the business (i.e hiring and outsourcing a lot of the work). A non profit doesn't have that incentive cos they are not trying to scale the business as it doesn't matter about being in demand. For profits need demand to set higher rates otherwise they don't grow. Non profit: fee + expenses = set price For profit: fee + expenses + demand = higher rates and more profit Jus my opinion tho

Seeing how they still charge for sessions, I’m guessing these guys all pay themselves a salary which means this is a regular recording studio that avoids paying taxes. Does anyone know?

Pretty much any nonprofit is going to have paid staff… not sure it would be sustainable to have a recording studio with only volunteers that offers everything free. Plus the fees are so low that they don’t actually cover much of the real cost at all. By charging a small fee, it’s accessible but keeps people accountable to show up. This is an incredible resource for artists, freelance engineers and bands who need practice space-no where else has these kind of low rates.

While I would be interested to know more of this particular institution's best practices, as every venture will always need to apply SOPs that fits best to their context and challenges, generally the NGO or Non Profit model would dictate a standard ownership and finance structure you can read up on. Generally this means operational costs such as salaries, tax exempt and no dividends distributed.
