Question: I have a LP range in my kitchen that has a small external LP regulator rated at 10" attached to it. That regulator is connected to a shutoff valve that is connected to 50 feet of 3/4" black iron pipe. Is there a regulator and connectors that I can connect a 15 pound LP tank to the other end of the black iron pipe ?

In cold weather, you'll learn the hard lesson if that second regulator is exposed to snow, moisture, freezing weather and limits PSI to appliances. Well outlined and terrific information. Ben, I was trained by Westland Oil Company years ago. We were taught up to 250k btu input, 1/2od copper on the primary line. Over 250k btu up to 350k btu, 5/8od copper on the primary line. I don’t think that your 3/8 copper line is big enough. Another way to increase your capacity is to use multiple low pressure regulators. 1 low pressure regulator for the furnace. 1 low pressure regulator for the hot water heater, BBQ, cook stove. Another low pressure regulator for the auxiliary furnace, or fire place. Also Ben you do not need shut off valves on each line after the high pressure regulator. The LP can not go backwards through a regulator. We tied two 500 tanks together for years. I adjust the regulators so that the primary tank was 10 psi, the secondary tank was 8 psi. The primary tank would go down to 5%, then the secondary tank would start being used. Kind of like the automatic tank switch over valve on your camper trailer. Hello from north east Montana. 10 miles from the Canadian border. In the last 3 weeks we have had -28°f two nights, -33°f one night, -30°f one night, -31°f one night.

Hello Darrel, thanks for the advice. Can I get your thoughts on a project in Dallas Texas, first time doing an underground LP tank. I will be running two 5-ton furnaces One 6-burner cooktop with stove, a Propane tankless water heater 199,000 btu, a fireplace and a small pool heater? YEA...... I was intending to run a 1-inch poly line from the underground LP approx. 30ft from the home to the building envelope can you shoot me straight. Please.
@darrelfuhrman821710 ай бұрын
@@abelsaenz3611 That 1” poly line at 10 psi should be adequate. Up here we try to put each major user on their own low pressure regulator. I would put each furnace on its own regulator. The fireplace & cooktop & oven should be able to be on a regulator. But down in Texas, I would recommend 1 regulator per furnace. Then the rest on 1 or 2 regulators, whatever is convenient. Up here we adjust the low pressure regulator to 10 inches minimum while running. That is why we run more low pressure regulators. When -30°f the extra low pressure regulators insure that the furnaces have enough pressure.

Great video. I do HVAC and have worked on a number of propane furnaces. Typically the inlet pressure for the appliance is rated for 13 or 14 inches of water column. This ensures a manifold pressure of around 10 or 11 inches. Would there be any issue setting your gas regulator higher at the tank or at the regulator going into the house? Which one would you adjust I guess is my question?

Thanks for the video Benjamin! I got a question, I’ve just built a food truck using LP. We are In CO, pretty cold winter. Oven takes 3 hours to reach 575 degrees. very useful and well done. Question, I have an in ground propane tank (Florida) and have a pigtail added on my patio to use for my gas grill. I am assuming I will need a regulator at the grill, because when I use it without the fire burns way too hot. Am I correct? What type/pressure regulator should I use? Any tips on installation? THANKS
@BenjaminSahlstrom5 жыл бұрын
It is possible that the connection for your grill came off of the line between the first and second stage regulators? If that was the case the line you hooked up to would be at 10psi when you only need 9-12" of pressure. You could just use a regular regulator for a propane grill as that should reduce the pressure to the correct level. Good luck! Let me know what you end up with!

In Wisconsin, any idea the minimum distance a 500 gallon LP tank needs to be from the home? Also, my intention is to plumb up my spare 500 gallon LP tank to a generator to feed the house when the power from the local power company goes down. Does one generally run a 3/8" copper tubing from the LP tank to the generator or should one run black pipe underground from LP tank to generator?
@BenjaminSahlstrom4 жыл бұрын
Here in our area the setback from the house is a question for your insurance company but I've heard that as little as 10ft may be adequate. Yes, I would probably run 3/8" copper to the generator then have another regulator to step the pressure down to whatever the generator needs.

Completely empty it, maybe put a vacuum evacuation pump on it for a few days, but the pump might be overkill. Immediately treat with methanol and fill with propane. You should be 100% good after that. Quit letting your tank level get low, and maybe your supplier has water in his tanks.

mrstevetrevino, I have a dual fuel generator... it has its own regulator. It is just hooked up to the tank no other regulator. If you look at a gas grill as an example, you only use the regulator that came with appliance. I am not an expert, so wait for the critics, to tear me a new asshole and use their advice. I found out if you ask you don’t get a reply, but if you state how you did it, then all shade tree plumbers come out of the woodwork.
@aron69983 жыл бұрын
Yes the appliance comes with a regulator and this is still needed even after the line pressure has been reduced to approximately 11” by the regulator either on the tank or at the house
@aron69983 жыл бұрын
@@samuelspade889 well typically real techs don’t like to answer questions that don’t have all the pertinent information bc not having all the info can lead to improper answers but yea you do only use one regulator on a grill bc that regulator is designed to go from full tank pressure to the designed pressure of the grill nothing else needed plus grills are outdoors and require less regulatory interference however indoor appliances must operate at a consistent basis to reduce carbon monoxide and this is one reason for individual regulators at each appliance also if the line pressure regulator fails the appliance regulator is designed to lock up and prevent very large fires inside the home

If you make another propane related video, it would be helpful to show the differences between a 2 stage system and a system with a 2 psi regulator (3 regulators) and the pressures each handle. An explanation of water column pressures and how they convert to psi would also take out the mystery to homeowners. Maybe a chart and/or visual showing showing how each stage works from tank pressure to water column/appliance pressure would help. THANKS AGAIN.
